Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valdis Lumans provides an authoritative, balanced, and comprehensive account of one of the most complex, and conflicted, arenas of the Second World War. Struggling against both Germany and the Soviet Union, Latvia emerged as an independent nation state after the First World War. In 1940, the Soviets occupied neutral Latvia, deporting or executing more than 30,000 Latvians before the Nazis invaded in 1941 and installed a puppet regime. The Red Army expelled the Germans in 1944 and reincorporated Latvia as a Soviet Republic. By the end of the war, an estimated 180,000 Latvians fled to the West. The Soviets would deport at least another 100,000. Drawing on a wide range of sources--many brought together here for the first time--Lumans synthesizes political, military, social, economic, diplomatic, and cultural history. He moves carefully through traditional sources, many of them partisan, to scholarship emerging since the end of the Cold War, to confront such issues as political loyalties, military collaboration, resistance, capitulation, the Soviet occupation, anti-Semitism, and the Latvian role in the Holocaust.

Book Skylarks and Rebels

Download or read book Skylarks and Rebels written by Rita Laima and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skylarks and Rebels is a story about the fate of Latvia in the 20th century as told by Rita Laima. Laima, a Latvian-American, chose to leave behind the comforts of life in America to explore the land of her ancestors, which in the 1980s languished behind the Iron Curtain. In writing about her own experiences in a totalitarian state, Soviet-occupied Latvia, Laima delves into her family’s past to understand what happened to her fatherland and its people during and after World War II. She also pays tribute to some of Latvia’s remarkable people of integrity who risked their lives to oppose the brutal and destructive Soviet state.

Book Military History of Latvia During World War Ii

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 32. Chapters: Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940, The Holocaust in Latvia, Reichskommissariat Ostland, Occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union 1944-1945, Latvian Legion, Destruction battalions, Courland Pocket, Occupation of the Baltic republics by Nazi Germany, Occupation of Latvia by Nazi Germany, 15th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, Swedish extradition of Baltic soldiers, 19th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, Maslenki, Latvian fleet that fought for the Allies in World War II. Excerpt: The Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940 refers, according to the European Court of Human Rights, the Government of Latvia, the State Department of the United States of America, and the European Union, to the military occupation of the Republic of Latvia by the Soviet Union ostensibly under the provisions of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Nazi Germany. When World War II started in September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland, Latvia had already come under the Soviet sphere of influence in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its Secret Additional Protocol of August 1939. In the reassessment period of the Soviet history that began during the Perestroika, the USSR in 1989 condemned the 1939 secret protocol between Nazi Germany and herself that had led to the invasion and occupation of the three Baltic countries, including Latvia. While Russia acknowledged in a treaty with Lithuania the adverse impact by the USSR on Lithuania's sovereignty prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, no such acknowledgment by Russia exists with regard to Estonia or Latvia, and the central authorities of the USSR did not acknowledge occupation prior to its dissolution. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Latvia's sovereignty was restored in 1991. The last Soviet troops withdrew from the Republic of Latvia in August 1994. M s esam k starp...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July of 1944 Stalin's troops cross the western border of Russia, into Latvia. Eight-year old Vera and her family attempt to flee from the country but there are no more boats to Sweden. The sound of gunfire rings out; men like Papa are being shot. Vera's father knows that he must escape alone, on foot, in the darkness of night. He makes a promise to his daughter: After the war, when Stalin's army has left our country, I will come home again... But after the war the Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are forced to become part of the USSR. Can Vera cling to the hope of her father's return, even after an 'iron curtain' separates her country from the rest of the world? In school, where Stalin imposes a new curriculum, Vera is often reprimanded but she excels in one area: with her beautiful singing voice. She is part of the large school chorus which will sing at the summer Song Festival. Stalin wants the world to think that all is well in the USSR and thus declares that the world should watch the Song Festival in Riga. Will Vera's father at last return? It has been her strong hope, through the years. "...Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us." Romans 5:3

Download or read book The Case for Latvia written by Jukka Rislakki and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we know about Latvia and the Latvians? A Baltic (not Balkan) nation that emerged from fifty years under the Soviet Union - interrupted by a brief but brutal Nazi-German occupation and a devastating war - now a member of the European Union and NATO. Yes, but what else? Relentless accusations keep appearing, especially in Russian media, often repeated in the West: "Latvian soldiers single-handedly saved Lenin's revolution in 1917", "Latvians killed Tsar Nikolai II and the Royal family", "Latvia was a thoroughly anti-Semitic country and Latvians started killing Jews even before the Germans arrived in 1941", "Nazi revival is rampant in today's Latvia", "The Russian minority is persecuted in Latvia. . ." True, false or in-between? The Finnish journalist and author Jukka Rislakki examines charges like these and provides an outline of Latvia's recent history while attempting to separate documented historical fact from misinformation and deliberate disinformation. His analysis helps to explain why the Baltic States (population 7 million) consistently top the enemy lists in public opinion polls of Russia (143 million). His knowledge of the Baltic languages allows him to make use of local sources and up-to-date historical research. He is a former Baltic States correspondent for Finland's largest daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat and the author of several books on Finnish and Latvian history. As a neutral, experienced and often critical observer, Rislakki is uniquely qualified for the task of separating truth from fiction.
