Book Obsidian Source Analysis in Northwestern Wyoming

Download or read book Obsidian Source Analysis in Northwestern Wyoming written by Gary A. Wright and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief update is given concerning our research into the distribution of obsidian from the three apparently most important sources in, or adjacent to, northwestern Wyoming. These include Obsidian Cliff in Yellowstone National Park and Teton Pass in southern Jackson Hole. The specific location of the third source, the F.M.Y. or 90 Group, obsidian from which was identified on archaeological sites over 15 years ago, is still unknown. The distribution data from archaeological sites suggest that the F.M.Y. (90 Goup) source itself is not located in Yellowstone National Park as was originally hypothesized; nor is it in Jackson Hole. We currently believe that it may be found somewhere in the arc west to north of Yellowstone National Park. The paper concludes with a request for samples from possible sources so that we might pinpoint the exact F.M.Y. (90 Group) location.

Book Obsidian Source Use in the Greater Yellowstone Area Wyoming Basin and the Central Rocky Mountains

Download or read book Obsidian Source Use in the Greater Yellowstone Area Wyoming Basin and the Central Rocky Mountains written by Laura L. Scheiber and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis from nearly 2,300 sourced obsidian artifacts in western Wyoming, southwestern Montana, and eastern Idaho, we demonstrate regional diachronic changes in access to and preference for particular obsidian sources throughout the West. We focus on both (1) long-term patterns of obsidian use that may inform us about the timing of precontact migrations of Numic (Shoshone) speakers into the Rocky Mountains and (2) the extent to which later contact among Native inhabitants and European immigrants was a mechanism for reducing elements of precontact mobility and exchange in the postcontact era. We view indigenous responses to contact in the study area as an active, strategic process with measurable material consequences. Despite a well-documented increase in mobility among local Native groups as a result of the introduction of the horse, our study demonstrates a restriction and reduction in Historic period source use in western Wyoming. We propose that changes in obsidian source use are a reflection of ethnogenesis and development of ethnographic bands as a response to culture contact among indigenous inhabitants and with Europeans.

Book A Cost Surface Analysis of Obsidian Use in the Wyoming Basin USA

Download or read book A Cost Surface Analysis of Obsidian Use in the Wyoming Basin USA written by David C. Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trans-Holocene time averaged synthesis of obsidian use in the Wyoming Basin is presented through the analysis of published and unpublished obsidian source provenance reports. A caloric based cost surface model is used to evaluate whether or not ecological factors contributed to the low regional abundance of Yellowstone Plateau obsidian. The results of the cost surface analysis indicate that modeled caloric costs for the use of four key sources varies little across the region and rather than environmental variables, social factors likely structured the regional obsidian record. Least cost paths generated from the cost surface models were compared to regional ethnographic and ethnohistoric records with the aim of comparing the seemingly stable trans-Holocene settlement and land-use patterns with historically documented ethnographic ranges. The regional obsidian record supports a stable, long-term subsistence strategy centered on the Wyoming Range and encompassing the Wyoming Basin and eastern Snake River Plain. .

Book Obsidian

Download or read book Obsidian written by M. Steven Shackley and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obsidian was long valued by ancient peoples as a raw material for producing stone tools, and archaeologists have increasingly come to view obsidian studies as a crucial aid in understanding the past. Steven Shackley now shows how the geochemical and contextual analyses of archaeological obsidian can be applied to the interpretation of social and economic organization in the ancient Southwest. This book, the capstone of decades of investigation, integrates a wealth of obsidian research in one volume. It covers advances in analytical chemistry and field petrology that have enhanced our understanding of obsidian source heterogeneity, presents the most recent data on and interpretations of archaeological obsidian sources in the Southwest, and explores the ethnohistorical and contemporary background for obsidian use in indigenous societies. Shackley provides a thorough examination of the geological origin of obsidian in the region and the methods used to collect raw material and determine its chemical composition, and descriptions of obsidian sources throughout the Southwest. He then describes the occurrence of obsidian artifacts and shows how their geochemical fingerprints allow archaeologists to make conclusions regarding the procurement of obsidian. The book presents three groundbreaking applications of obsidian source studies. It first discusses an application to early Preceramic groups, showing how obsidian sources can reflect the range they inhabited over time as well as their social relationships during the Archaic period. It then offers an examination of the Late Classic Salado in Arizona's Tonto Basin, where obsidian data, along with ceramic and architectural evidence, suggest that Mogollon migrants lived in economic and social harmony with the Hohokam, all the while maintaining relationships with their homeland. Finally, it provides an intensive look at social identity and gender differences in the Preclassic Hohokam of central Arizona, where obsidian source provenance and projectile point styles suggest that male Hohokam sought to create a stylistically defined identity in at least three areas of the Hohokam core area. These male "sodalities" were organized quite differently from female ceramic production groups. Today, obsidian research in the American Southwest enjoys an equal standing with ceramic, faunal, and floral studies as a method of revealing social process and change in prehistory. Shackley's book discusses the ways in which archaeologists should approach obsidian research, no matter what the region, offering a thorough survey of archaeological obsidian studies that will have methodological and theoretical applications worldwide. The volume includes an extensive glossary created specifically for archaeologists.
