Book Host Location and Utilization by the Pepper Weevil Anthonomus Eugenii Cano

Download or read book Host Location and Utilization by the Pepper Weevil Anthonomus Eugenii Cano written by Karla Michele Addesso and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In further oviposition studies, females laid fewer eggs in naturally infested pepper fruits in cage and small arena studies. A host marking pheromone responsible for the deterrence was identified in the oviposition plug and frass of female weevils. This compound or compounds are slightly polar with low volatility and are potential candidates for use in pest management programs. An investigation into the response of pepper weevil to host plant volatiles found that 10-d-old males and 2 and 10-d-old females oriented to the volatiles of three host plants (pepper, American black nightshade, and eggplant). Only 10-d-old males and females could perceive differences in volatile plumes, ignoring volatiles from non-host plants outside the Solanaceae. Ten-d-old males and females were also strongly attracted to pepper plants with actively feeding female weevils. It is hoped that by combining this knowledge of the deterrent pheromone and attractive plant volatiles, a new tool for pepper weevil pest management can be developed.

Book Integrated Pest and Disease Management in Greenhouse Crops

Download or read book Integrated Pest and Disease Management in Greenhouse Crops written by Ramon Albajes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), established in 1962, is an intergovernmental organization of 13 countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. Four institutes (Bari, Italy; Chania, Greece; Montpellier, France; and Zaragoza, Spain) provide postgraduate education at the Master of Science level. CIHEAM promotes research networks on Mediterranean agricultural priorities, supports the organization of specialized education in member countries, holds seminars and workshops bringing together technologists and scientists involved in Mediterranean agriculture and regularly produces diverse publications including the series Options Méditerranéennes. Through these activities, CIHEAM promotes North/South dialogue and international co-operation for agricultural development in the Mediterranean region. Over the past decade, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza has developed a number of training and research-supporting activities in the field of agroecology and sustainability of agricultural production systems. Some of these activities have been concerned with the rational use of pesticides and more particularly with the implementation of integrated control systems in order to gain in efficacy and decrease both the environmental impact and the negative repercussions for the commercialization of agricultural products.

Book Biological Control in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Biological Control in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Joop C. van Lenteren and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-12-21 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes the history of biological control in Latin America and the Caribbean. Few publications provide historical detail and the records are, therefore, fragmented until now. By bringing information together in this book, we offer a more complete picture of important developments in biological control on this continent. There are a wealth of text, tables and references about the history of such projects, and which were succesful and which failed. This will help plan future biocontrol projects. An overview is provided of the current situation in biological control for many Latin American and Caribbean countries, revealing an astonishing level of practical biological control applied in the regio, making it the largest area under biological control worldwide. The final part describes new developments and speculates about the future of biological control in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Book Grasshoppers of Florida

Download or read book Grasshoppers of Florida written by John L. Capinera and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Florida naturalists will be delighted by Grasshoppers of Florida. This wonderfully presented book unlocks an amazing world that previously was unavailable to most backyard and weekend naturalists."--Richard Franz, Florida Museum of Natural History "This is an easy-to-use field guide to the grasshoppers of Florida. If you have ever wondered what that big critter is, jumping around outside, this book is for you."--Richard A. Redak, University of California, Riverside This first field guide to the grasshoppers of Florida introduces one of the most obvious and important, though little appreciated, insect groups. It provides identification of the 70 species known to occur in Florida and may be used in other southeastern states where many of these grasshoppers are also found. The authors present the biology, behavior, ecological significance, and damage potential of grasshoppers and emphasize their interrelationship with Florida's fauna. Straightforward, detailed descriptions, color photos, drawings, and distribution maps make it possible to identify each species with accuracy.

Book Variable plants and herbivores in natural and managed systems

Download or read book Variable plants and herbivores in natural and managed systems written by Robert Denno and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variable Plants and Herbivores in Natural and Managed Systems examines individual, population, species, and community responses of herbivores to plant variation, with emphasis on insects, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. It is divided into five parts encompassing 18 chapters that discuss variability as a mechanism of defense used by plants against their parasites and the effects of variability on herbivores at several different levels of complexity. After a brief discussion on plant-herbivore interactions, the first part of this book considers sources of within-plant variation and effects on the distribution and abundance of herbivores. Part II examines interplant variation, the co-evolutionary problems it poses for herbivores, and the ecological and evolutionary responses of these animals. It discusses the effects of host-plant variability on the fitness of sedentary herbivorous insects. Part III discusses the role of host variability in the evolution of feeding specialization, genetic differentiation, and race formation. The importance of host variation to the organization of herbivore communities and the manipulation of host-plant variability for the management of herbivore pest populations are presented in the remaining parts. This book will be helpful to agriculturists, silviculturists, biologists, and researchers who wish to expand their knowledge in dynamics of plant-herbivore relationships.
