Book Nursery Guide for Diseases Caused by Phytophthora Ramorum on Ornamentals Diagnosis and Management

Download or read book Nursery Guide for Diseases Caused by Phytophthora Ramorum on Ornamentals Diagnosis and Management written by S A Tjosvold and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytophthora ramorum has caused widespread mortality in native oaks and tanoaks in coastal areas of central and northern California. On oaks, the disease is commonly called sudden oak death. Camellias, rhododendrons, and other popular ornamental plants are susceptible to infection, and the pathogen can be moved long distances through ship ments of infected nursery stock. Federal and state quarantines are in effect that require nursery inspections, and if the pathogen is found, affected nursery stock must be destroyed as a means of eradication.

Book Pathways of Infection of Phytophthora Ramorum in Rhododendron

Download or read book Pathways of Infection of Phytophthora Ramorum in Rhododendron written by Carrie D. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phytophthora ramorum, a plant pathogen, is the cause of sudden oak death and ramorum blight and shoot die-back. It has a wide host range including many native forest species and common nursery plants. The lack of knowledge regarding infection biology of P. ramorum limits our understanding of its ecology and epidemiology. Pathways of infection were investigated in Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla' using tissue culture plantlets and greenhouse-grown container plants planted in artificially-infested potting medium, or inoculated with a zoospore suspension or mycelial plugs. The presence of the pathogen in plant tissue was determined by isolation onto selective medium and PCR analysis. Histological examinations of tissue samples were performed with fluorescence, scanning electron and scanning laser confocal microscopy. Inoculated roots, stems and leaves were examined to identify pathways by which P. ramorum infects and colonizes rhododendrons. Results indicate that roots can be infected by P. ramorum without causing root rot. Below-ground infections arising from artificially infested potting medium resulted in infection of above-ground stems and leaf petioles. P. ramorum was found in the primary xylem of below-ground and above-ground stem tissue. Inoculation of roots with zoospore inoculum resulted in inter- and intracellular penetration of root tissue. Cysts appeared to aggregate at wound sites and near root primoridia. Examination of inoculated leaves revealed that P. ramorum does not require stomata for leaf infection. P. ramorum spread from inoculated leaves into petioles and stems via the vascular tissue (primary xylem). These results indicate that P. ramorum may be present but not cause obvious symptoms in certain plant tissues. This may contribute to difficulties in detection of infected plants, a requirement for limiting the long-distance spread of the disease with infested nursery stock.

Book Tactical Sciences for Biosecurity in Animal and Plant Systems

Download or read book Tactical Sciences for Biosecurity in Animal and Plant Systems written by Cardwell, Kitty F. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is often under the threat of invasive species of animal pests and pathogens that do harm to crops. It is essential to have the best methods and tools available to prevent this harm. Biosecurity is a mixture of institutions, policies, and science applications that attempts to prevent the spread of unhealthy pests. Tactical Sciences for Biosecurity in Animal and Plant Systems focuses on the tactical sciences needed to succeed in the biosecurity objectives of preventing plant and animal pathogens from entering or leaving the United States. This book explores a divergence of tactics between plant and animal exotic disease response. Covering topics such as animal pests and pathogens, tactical management, and early detection, this book is an essential resource for researchers, academicians, university faculty, government biosecurity practitioners, customs officers, clinical scientists, and students.

The Timber Press Guide to Gardening in the Pacific Northwest presents all the information a gardener—whether novice or expert—needs to keep their garden beautiful and thriving. With a combined 100 years of gardening experience in the Pacific Northwest, the authors clearly explain the unique challenges and joys of gardening in the region. By dividing the Pacific Northwest into seven subregions, they help readers to better understand the climatic and geographical factors that shape their gardens. This complete guide includes extensive profiles of plants that are ideally suited to the region, including perennials, ornamental grasses, bulbs, groundcovers, roses, shrubs, trees, and climbers. The month-by-month gardening calendar describes what weather patterns to expect, what's in bloom, and what garden tasks are best done in that month. With additional chapters detailing the most common gardening problems and recommendations for effective, nontoxic ways of dealing with them, this book is nothing short of essential.

Book Phytophthora

Download or read book Phytophthora written by Kurt Lamour and published by CABI. This book was released on 2013 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with an account of the early history of Phytophthora research and the tumultuous events setting the genus in motion. In keeping with its controversial inception, the chapter on taxonomy and phylogeny makes a compelling case that our current notion of Phytophthora as a genus is illusory. This chapter sets the stage for the importance of molecular tools on these enigmatic pathogens. The following chapters discuss species identification, population-level investigation, interspecific hybrids and the impact of diverse Phytophthora species on crops, forests, nurseries, greenhouses and natural areas worldwide.

Book Phytophthora Infestations in Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Phytophthora Infestations in Forest Ecosystems written by Bruno Scanu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oomycete genus Phytophthora represents one of the most notorious groups of tree pathogens in natural and semi-natural forest ecosystems. Since the discovery in the 1960s of the invasive P. cinnamomi, threatening some of the world’s richest plant communities in Australia, numerous Phytophthora diseases have been reported on forest trees worldwide, which were previously unknown to science. The most notable examples include the oak and beech declines triggered by different Phytophthora spp. in Europe and North America, the findings of sudden oak death and sudden larch death caused by P. ramorum in the Western USA and the U.K., respectively, and the association of P. austrocedri with mal del ciprés in Argentina and juniper decline in the U.K. All these epidemic events are driven by exotic invasive Phytophthora species, introduced through infested nursery plants from their native overseas environments. In recent years, many independent surveys have studied the diversity of Phytophthora species and the diseases they are causing across a diverse range of forests and other natural ecosystems. This Special Issue presents papers on Phytophthora surveys performed in different biogeographic regions and addresses the pathways, and ecological and economic impacts of these invasive forest pathogens.
