Download or read book Original Gangstas written by Ben Westhoff and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Raw, authoritative, and unflinching ... An elaborately detailed, darkly surprising, definitive history of the LA gangsta rap era." -- Kirkus, starred review A monumental, revealing narrative history about the legendary group of artists at the forefront of West Coast hip-hop: Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur. Amid rising gang violence, the crack epidemic, and police brutality, a group of unlikely voices cut through the chaos of late 1980s Los Angeles: N.W.A. Led by a drug dealer, a glammed-up producer, and a high school kid, N.W.A gave voice to disenfranchised African Americans across the country. And they quickly redefined pop culture across the world. Their names remain as popular as ever -- Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. Dre soon joined forces with Suge Knight to create the combustible Death Row Records, which in turn transformed Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur into superstars. Ben Westhoff explores how this group of artists shifted the balance of hip-hop from New York to Los Angeles. He shows how N.W.A.'s shocking success lead to rivalries between members, record labels, and eventually a war between East Coast and West Coast factions. In the process, hip-hop burst into mainstream America at a time of immense social change, and became the most dominant musical movement of the last thirty years. At gangsta rap's peak, two of its biggest names -- Tupac and Biggie Smalls -- were murdered, leaving the surviving artists to forge peace before the genre annihilated itself. Featuring extensive investigative reporting, interviews with the principal players, and dozens of never-before-told stories, Original Gangstas is a groundbreaking addition to the history of popular music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic saga of Jake Goodson comes to its conclusion in Volume Three of the trilogy, A Jeweler’s Eye View. The spellbinding finale of the story begins with Jake Goodson and Sam Bailey in jail for the crime of a murder they didn’t commit. The incriminating testimonies and fabricated evidence brought against them are the result of the religious cult’s efforts to destroy them. At first, they seem to succeed. As the two men are left with the daunting task of exonerating themselves and even fighting for their very lives, they relentlessly continue their attempt to rescue the children from the Ekkklesia of Yahoeh. The megalomaniacal leader of the Aryan sect allows his ambitions for power and religious supremacy to draw his followers into battle with all in the outside world who oppose him. While Hightower convinces them that all “outsiders” are in league with the Devil and must be destroyed, he focuses on removing everyone who gets in his way. As a result, he is brought face-to-face with Sam and Jake in a final epic battle. Jake attempts to outflank Hightower by infiltrating the Ekkklesia of Yahoeh, and this has turned on him as he is now immersed in his own rite of exorcism. The brainwashing strategies brought to bear against him invariably drive him deep into the psyche of his personal nightmares in ways that are completely unexpected. As this exciting trilogy concludes, the forces of good and evil are brought into a final showdown as the battle unfolds between the religious cult and the two men trying to rescue their children from its grip.

Book The Future of Us All

Download or read book The Future of Us All written by Roger Sanjek and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the next century is out, Americans of African, Asian, and Latin American ancestry will outnumber those of European origin. In the Elmhurst-Corona neighborhood of Queens, New York City, the transition occurred during the 1970s, and the area's two-decade experience of multiracial diversity offers us an early look at the future of urban America. The result of more than a dozen years' work, this remarkable book immerses us in Elmhurst-Corona's social and political life from the 1960s through the 1990s. First settled in 1652, Elmhurst-Corona by 1960 housed a mix of Germans, Irish, Italians, and other "white ethnics." In 1990 this population made up less than a fifth of its residents; Latin American and Asian immigrants and African Americans comprised the majority. The Future of Us All focuses on the combined impact of racial change, immigrant settlement, governmental decentralization, and assaults on local quality of life which stemmed from the city's 1975 fiscal crisis and the policies of its last three mayors. The book examines the ways in which residents--in everyday interactions, block and tenant associations, houses of worship, small business coalitions, civic rituals, incidents of ethnic and racial hostility, and political struggles against overdevelopment, for more schools, and for youth programs--have forged and tested alliances across lines of race, ethnicity, and language. From the telling local details of daily life to the larger economic and regional frameworks, this account of a neighborhood's transformation illuminates the issues that American communities will be grappling with in the coming decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hence, the messages to the streets. Just as light extinguishes darkness, truth dispels falsehood. The latter cannot find its existence in the presence of the former. Likewise, without effort or any added exertion of energy, that which is real or authentic and governed by law of authenticity will expose the fraudulent. The true intent of the heart is revealed through the reading of the message. Boys (as well as girls) are confronted and challenged to disregard their erroneous preconceived notions of what they were taught with regards to the code of the streets. Also, while no longer being given the opportunity to promote a fictitious to the young and naive, the coward is exposed. These Messages are the embodiment of mother’s prayers being asnwered. The most earnest of prayers derived from a need. The need for a mesasge is paramount. But, who is qualified to fulfill this need? If the law of our land is invalid and the code of the streets have been declared null in void. Who is it that has been given the authority to speak? Only those who are the best of what society has deemed to be worst, the true outlaw. The outlaw is not conventional in his methods, and does not live within the confines of popular belief. He is not defined by what others say of him; nor will he allow the actions of another dictate his agenda. He seeks no hand-outs and will create for himself a new reality when the old is no longer sufficient. The only law that he lives to uphold is that of authenticity. Being true to himself and being all the way legitimate with his convictions.

Book Handbook of Children Culture and Violence

Download or read book Handbook of Children Culture and Violence written by Nancy E. Dowd and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2006 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each chapter contains recommendations for legislators, policy makers, researchers, and families. This book should be on the desk, and minds, of legislators, attorneys, social workers and other mental health professionals who encounter and wish to ameliorate the effects of violence in the lives of their young constituents, clients, and patients." -JOURNAL OF CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIESQuestions relating to violence and children surround us in the media: should V-chips be placed in every television set? How can we prevent another Columbine school shooting from occurring? How should pornography on the internet be regulated? The Handbook of Children, Culture and Violence addresses these questions and more, providing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary examination of childhood violence that considers children as both consumers and perpetrators of violence, as well as victims of it. The Handbook offers much-needed empirical evidence that will help inform debate about these important policy decisions. Moreover, it is the first single volume to consider situations when children are responsible for violence, rather than focusing exclusively on occasions when they are victimized. Providing the first comprehensive overview of current research in the field, the editors have brought together the work of a group of prominent scholars whose work is united by a common concern for the impact of violence on the lives of children. The Handbook of Children, Culture and Violence is poised to become the ultimate resource and reference work on children and violence for researchers, teachers, and students of psychology, human development and family studies, law, communications, education, sociology, and political science/ public policy. It will also appeal to policymakers, media professionals, and special interest groups concerned with reducing violence in children's lives. Law firms specializing in family law, as well as think tanks, will also be interested in the Handbook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Lawrence Sitomer writes a compelling story of piecing together a life after a devastating loss--when the threat of violence lurks at every step. When Teddy Anderson's little sister Tina is gunned down randomly in a drive-by shooting, the gangstas who rule the streets in the Anderson family's rapidly deteriorating neighborhood dismiss the incident as just another case of wrong place, wrong time. According to gangsta logic, Tina doesn't even count as a statistic. After his elaborately laid plans for revenge against his sister's killer are foiled by the cops. Teddy soon finds himself in and then out of prison on house arrest, into the hands of Officer Mariana Diaz, the smart, tough probation officer assigned to oversee his endless hours of community service. As part of the innovative rehabilitation program Diaz runs, Teddy is assigned to tutor Micah, a twelve-year-old orphan and would-be gansta. As Teddy goes through the motions of complying with the terms of his probation, Diaz has no idea that he is using his genius-level computer hacker skills to plot his final vengeance and to defraud the state education system of hundreds of thousands of dollars. But even though Teddy thinks he knows it all, he fails to see how Micah's desperate need for love and trust just might have the power not only to pierce all Teddy's defenses, but to save his family.
