Download or read book Molecular Chaperones in Health and Disease written by Matthias Gaestel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular chaperones are involved in a wide variety of essential cellular processes in living cells. A subset of molecular chaperones have been initially described as heat shock proteins protecting cells from stress damage by keeping cellular proteins in a folding competent state and preventing them from irreversible aggregation. Later it became obvious that molecular chaperones are also expressed constitutively in the cell and are involved in complex processes such as protein synthesis, intracellular protein transport, post-translational modification and secretion of proteins as well as receptor signalling. Hence, it is not surprising that molecular chaperones are implicated in the pathogenesis of many relevant diseases and could be regarded as potential pharmacological targets. Starting with the analysis of the mode of action of chaperones at the molecular, cellular and organismic level, this book will then describe specific aspects where modulation of chaperone action could be of pharmacological and therapeutic interest.
Download or read book Heat Shock Proteins in Cancer written by Stuart K. Calderwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-09 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat shock proteins are emerging as important molecules in the development of cancer and as key targets in cancer therapy. These proteins enhance the growth of cancer cells and protect tumors from treatments such as drugs or surgery. However, new drugs have recently been developed particularly those targeting heat shock protein 90. As heat shock protein 90 functions to stabilize many of the oncogenes and growth promoting proteins in cancer cells, such drugs have broad specificity in many types of cancer cell and offer the possibility of evading the development of resistance through point mutation or use of compensatory pathways. Heat shock proteins have a further property that makes them tempting targets in cancer immunotherapy. These proteins have the ability to induce an inflammatory response when released in tumors and to carry tumor antigens to antigen presenting cells. They have thus become important components of anticancer vaccines. Overall, heat shock proteins are important new targets in molecular cancer therapy and can be approached in a number of contrasting approaches to therapy.

Download or read book Principles of Endocrinology and Hormone Action written by Antonino Belfiore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge of the physiology of the endocrine system and hormone synthesis and release, transport, and action at the molecular and cellular levels. It presents essential as well as in-depth information of value to both medical students and specialists in Endocrinology, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine. Although it is well established that the endocrine system regulates essential functions involved in growth, reproduction, and homeostasis, it is increasingly being recognized that this complex regulatory system comprises not only hormones secreted by the classic endocrine glands but also hormones and regulatory factors produced by many organs, and involves extensive crosstalk with the neural and immune system. At the same time, our knowledge of the molecular basis of hormone action has greatly improved. Understanding this complexity of endocrine physiology is crucial to prevent endocrine disorders, to improve the sensitivity of our diagnostic tools, and to provide the rationale for pharmacological, immunological, or genetic interventions. It is such understanding that this book is designed to foster.

Download or read book Phosphate Metabolism written by Shaul Massry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present to our readers the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Phosphate. A short account of the history of the effort led to the Phosphate Workshops is appro priate and can be of interest to the reader. The idea for Phosphate Workshops was born in the early days of November, 1974. One of us (S. G. M. ) suggested the thought to a group of scientists gathered for a luncheon in one of the attrac tive small restaurants in Weisbaden, Germany. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together interested scientists to discuss the newer developments and the recent advances in the field of phosphate metabolism and the other related minerals. An Organizing Committee made of Shaul G. Massry (USA), Louis V. Avioli (USA), Philippe Bordier (France), Herbert Fleisch (Switzerland), and Eduardo Slatopolsky (USA) was formed. The First Workshop was held in Paris during June 5-6, 1975 and was hosted by Dr. Philippe Bordier. Its proceeding was already published. The Second Workshop took place in Heidelberg during June 28-30, 1976 and was hosted by Dr. Eberhard Ritz. Both of these workshops were extremely successful scientific endeavors, and the need for them was demonstrated by the great interest they generated among the scientific community. The Or ganizing Committee, therefore, decided to continue with the tradi tion to hold additional Workshops annually or every other year.

Download or read book Analytical Ultracentrifugation written by Susumu Uchiyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) as a whole, covering essential theoretical and practical aspects as well as its applications in both biological and non-biological systems. Comprehensive characterizations of macromolecules in a solution are now routinely required not only for understanding the solution system but also for producing a solution with better properties. Analytical ultracentrifugation is one of most powerful and reliable techniques for studying the biophysical behavior of solutes in solution. In the last few years, there have been steady advances made in hardware, software, and applications for AUC. This book provides chapters that cover everything essential for beginners to the most advanced users and also offer updated knowledge of the field on advances in hardware, software, and applications. Recent development of hardware described in this book covers new detection systems that give added dimensions to AUC. Examples of data analysis with essential theoretical explanations for advanced and recently updated software are also introduced. Besides AUC of biological systems including membrane proteins and biopharmaceuticals, AUC applications for non-biological questions are included. AUC studies under non-ideal conditions such as highly concentrated solutions and solutions with high salt concentration are also included. The contributors to this book are leading researchers in the fields of solution biophysics and physical chemistry who extensively employ AUC analysis for their research. From this published work, one can gain new and comprehensive knowledge of recent AUC analysis.

Book excerpt: Baculoviruses have proven to be the most powerful and versatile eukaryotic expression vectors available. This unique laboratory manual is designed to help both beginning and experienced researchers construct and use baculovirus vector systems. It simplifies selection of the most appropriatebaculovirus vector design for a given problem, then describes each step of the implementation process--from vector construction to large-scale protein production. The book provides an understanding of how the vectors work; a biological overview of cells, viruses, plasmids, and promoters; guidelinesfor choosing optimum vectors; protocols for growing insect cells and recombinant viruses; methods of analyzing protein products and scaling up protein production; techniques for producing proteins in insect larvae; and easy-to-use maps charting available expression vectors. This comprehensiveapproach has many benefits for researchers and students alike. It allows them to understand how and why the vector system works and offers a rapid comparison of options for choosing the right virus, plasmid or promoter for vector design and construction, with a minimum amount of lost time. Themanual is an invaluable resource for every individual engaged in the production of proteins for any purpose.
