Book Indigenous Invisibility in the City

Download or read book Indigenous Invisibility in the City written by Deirdre Howard-Wagner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous Invisibility in the City contextualises the significant social change in Indigenous life circumstances and resurgence that came out of social movements in cities. It is about Indigenous resurgence and community development by First Nations people for First Nations people in cities. Seventy-five years ago, First Nations peoples began a significant post-war period of relocation to cities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Aotearoa New Zealand. First Nations peoples engaged in projects of resurgence and community development in the cities of the four settler states. First Nations peoples, who were motivated by aspirations for autonomy and empowerment, went on to create the foundations of Indigenous social infrastructure. This book explains the ways First Nations people in cities created and took control of their own futures. A fact largely wilfully ignored in policy contexts. Today, differences exist over the way governments and First Nations peoples see the role and responsibilities of Indigenous institutions in cities. What remains hidden in plain sight is their societal function as a social and political apparatus through which much of the social processes of Indigenous resurgence and community development in cities occurred. The struggle for self-determination in settler cities plays out through First Nations people’s efforts to sustain their own institutions and resurgence, but also rights and recognition in cities. This book will be of interest to Indigenous studies scholars, urban sociologists, urban political scientists, urban studies scholars, and development studies scholars interested in urban issues and community building and development.

Book Indigenous Governance of Traditional Knowledge

Download or read book Indigenous Governance of Traditional Knowledge written by Neva Collings and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the issue of Indigenous peoples' participation in genetic resource access and benefit-sharing and associated traditional knowledge for self-determination. Genetic resources from nature are increasingly used in global biodiscovery research and development, but they often use Indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge without their consent and without sharing the benefit. The Nagoya Protocol is an instrument of the Convention on Biological Diversity intended to ensure Indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge is used with their prior and informed consent or approval and entails benefit-sharing on mutually agreed terms. Many countries with significant Indigenous populations have signed the Nagoya Protocol and are currently grappling with implementation of its provisions. This book takes up a case study of Australia to demonstrate how Indigenous community governance in settler states can serve as a path to implementing the Nagoya Protocol. Australia’s access and benefitsharing framework is globally hailed as best practice, offering lessons for other countries implementing the Nagoya Protocol. Focusing on two Indigenous community organisations in Australia, the book establishes a unique evaluative framework for analysing and differentiating the governance arrangements used by Indigenous communities for facilitating decision-making related to traditional knowledge. This book will appeal to scholars working in the areas of international environmental law, human rights, biotechnology law, and Indigenous legal issues; as well as those directly engaged in implementing access and benefit-sharing measures and developing law reform strategies.

Book Land Tax in Australia

Download or read book Land Tax in Australia written by Vince Mangioni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land Tax in Australia demonstrates how land tax operates and is administered across State and local governments in Australia. International expert Vincent Mangioni reviews the current status and emerging trends in these taxes in Australia and compares them with the UK, USA, Canada, Denmark and New Zealand. Using substantial original research, the author sets out what Australia must do through practice and policy to reform and bring this tax into the 21st Century. The need for fiscal reform and strengthening the finances of Australia’s sub-national government is long overdue. These reforms aim to minimise the taxpayer revolts encountered in previous attempts at land tax reform, while improving tax effort in line with other advanced OECD countries. This book provides an essential resource for all property professionals working in development, valuation, law, investment, as well as accountants, tax economists and government administrators. It is highly recommended for students on property, taxation, legal and social science courses.
