Download or read book The Birth of Economics as a Social Science written by Francesca Dal Degan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although considered a classic thinker, Sismondi is seldom discussed, at least in English. In this context, this volume offers a key reference work on the intellectual and economic contribution of Sismondi to the economic, political, and social sciences. The book explores his works in order to rediscover the direction of a viable path to individual and public happiness. Through examining Sismondi’s work, The Birth of Economics as a Social Science contributes to the current debate on the relationships between liberty, interpersonal relations, and wealth. Moreover, Dal Degan presents an analytical and historical example of the ways in which an author from the past attempted to connect these aspects in his scientific discourse. The first part of the book focuses on Sismondi’s political thought, paying particular attention to the different cultural and political traditions that pepper the author’s reflections on the conditions for liberty. The second part analyzes the epistemological view underlying how Sismondi’s historical method and multidisciplinary approach respond to the need to base economic discourse on a contextual and causal analysis that also addresses the historical and institutional structure of social organizations. Finally, the third part of the book is dedicated to Sismondi’s economic theory. This work brings the works of Sismondi to a wider readership. It will be of great interest to those studying and researching economic theory and the connections between economics and society, as well as the broader social sciences.
Download or read book New Principles of Political Economy written by Peter Grootings and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Sismondi was admired for his analytic originality and imagination by Marx, Mill, and Schumpeter, until now there has been no full translation of his major work into English. Richard Hyse's excellent translation permits us to absorb the full flavor and quality of his thought. And as Robert Heilbroner notes in his foreword: "Perhaps even more useful is the commentary that precedes and accompanies the text . . . Hyse takes the reader on a conducted tour as he points out Sismondi's differences from, and criticisms of, Smith and Ricardo and Say, on the one hand, and Marx on the other."In many respects, Sismondi's thought was ahead of its time. A half-century before Walras, he spoke of aggregate "equilibrium." Fifty years before Marx, he devised an algebraic model of economic growth. Ten years before Mill he published an analytical criticism of Say's Law, and one of the earliest uses of marginal utility analysis to explain value. Schumpeter credited him as the father of dynamic analysis in the modern sense. He is also recognized by all as the pioneer of business cycle analysis.Richard Hyse's introduction adds valuable biographical information about Sismondi, and positions his work among eighteenth-century social and economic thinkers. As he notes, Sismondi's life spanned one of the most revolutionary periods in European history; and although Marxist theory clearly owes a debt to Sismondi, his preference was evolution, not revolution. The translation will illuminate the genesis of Marxist ideology and some of the basic causes of its failure. Publication of this translation will be welcomed by economists, social scientists interested in the history of ideas, and those who, in Hyse's words, wish to "follow the mind of a vigorous pamphleteer dealing with the turbulent world of the French Revolution and its lasting aftermath."

Download or read book The Power of Large Numbers written by Joshua Cole and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French government officials have long been known among Europeans for the special attention they give to the state of their population. In the first half of the nineteenth century, as Paris doubled in size and twice suffered the convulsions of popular revolution, civic leaders looked with alarm at what they deemed a dangerous population explosion. After defeat in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, however, the falling birthrate generated widespread fears of cultural and national decline. In response, legislators promoted larger families and the view that a well-regulated family life was essential for France. In this innovative work of cultural history, Joshua Cole examines the course of French thinking and policymaking on population issues from the 1780s until the outbreak of the Great War. During these decades increasingly sophisticated statistical methods for describing and analyzing such topics as fertility, family size, and longevity made new kinds of aggregate knowledge available to social scientists and government officials. Cole recounts how this information heavily influenced the outcome of debates over the scope and range of public welfare legislation. In particular, as the fear of depopulation grew, the state wielded statistical data to justify increasing intervention in family life and continued restrictions on the autonomy of women.

Download or read book The Capitalist Economy and its Prosthetics written by Gerhard H. Wächter and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding its ruthless dynamics, the capitalist economy has the flaw of deficient employment-generating spending. This leads to unemployment of non-owners, individual suffering, social unrest and it undermines military strength. To deal with these issues, states use prosthetic policies, artificial transfers to the productive economy and to non-owners. But the funding of such prosthetic policies - through violent wealth appropriation abroad, protectionism, war, domestic expropriation and taxation, debt and money creation - is caught in dilemmas, while politicians are caught between non-solutions. According to Gerhard H. Wächter, the history of capitalist society is largely the history of this dilemmatic brotherhood.
