Kings In the Hebrew Scriptures, this Book and the following make but one, named, - in Jewish fashion, by the first words, which are translated in our version, "Now King David." The Septuagint calls it the Third Book of Reigns, - the Vulgate, the Third Book of Kings, - and the Arabic, the Book of Solomon, (he being the most important of the monarchs whose reigns it recounts). The exact date of the compilation of the Book is not, of course, known; but, if it was, as we think, the work of Ezra, it may be safely supposed to have been written by him after his return from Babylon, with the second caravan of Jews, 458 B.C. The authorship of the work is more disputed than that of any of the historical books of the Bible. - The Jews ascribe it to Jeremiah; - some believe that David and Solomon wrote the accounts of their reigns; while others imagine that the book was written in portions by the prophets who lived under the respective Kings; and that the complete work was compiled thence, and from the national records kept by the scribes, by one person, (probably Ezra). This last view seems correct, for, 1. We read, in I. Kings, and II. Chron., of the "acts" of different monarchs being recorded in the "books" of various prophets, (such as Nathan, Ahijah, Shemaiali, and Iddo), and in "the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Judah," and "of Israel." But it not unfrequently happens that the notes are fewest where the text is most interesting. The author has kept recent theories about the Old Testament and the religion of Israel constantly in rmind, and without obtruding them prematurely, hopes that he has prepared the way so that when the time comes for facing them, as come it must, there will be less shock than if the traditional views had been confidently asserted. It seems unnecessary in a school book to give references to the authorities used, even in the Preface. It will be enough to commend Dr. Lumby'e edition in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges to those who desire more elaborate notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Hebrew d104 of the Books of Kings: With an Introduction and Appendix The aim of the present work is to provide a critical and grammatical commentary upon the Hebrew text of Kings, after the model of Dr. Driver's Notes on the Hebrew d104 of the Books of Samuel, In writing the Notes, the needs of beginners in the study of the Hebrew language have been prominent in my mind, and so I have endeavoured to deal with some fulness with questions of grammar, while at the same time making reference to the best authorities upon the subject. For the purposes of textual criticism it has seemed worth while to utilize as largely as might be the evidence of the Versions. Thus, as far as possible, all variants and additions of the Versions have been cited, where it may reasonably be supposed that these form original elements of the text from which the Version in question was made; upon the view that such readings are worthy of record, even where no definite verdict can be passed as to their value in relation to the Massoretic text. The structure of Kings, and the characteristics of the various sources of the work, have also been dealt with in brief. The Appendix contains the more important contemporary inscriptions which throw light upon the narrative of Kings. In making use of the work of my predecessors in the same field, I trust that I have in every case made acknowledgement of my obligations.
