Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Elizabethan Dramatists: With Conjectural Emendations of the Text All verbal critics, more or less, have had to pay, and always will have; for verbal criticism neither can, nor will, be stop ped: it is essential to the advancement of learning. The eminent philologist Gottfried Hermann, who stands in the frontrank of verbal critics, in one of his lectures, delivered it as his conviction that a verbal critic of the true stamp should be willing like Saturn to devour his own offspring. As one of his disciples, therefore, I cannot be blamed if, following his precept and example, I hereby eat those conject ural emendations of Elizabethan dramatists which I have hither to published and which are not contained in my editions of Elizabethan plays, in Messrs Warnke's and Proescholdt's Edition of 'mucedorus', and in the present collection; at the same time let me breathe the h0pe that the emendations published in those editions and in this collection may not need, at some future day, to be subjected to the same Satur nian process. My conjectural emendations in the text of 'mucedorus', which appeared originally in the Shakespeare Jahrbuch XIII, 45 seqq., have been excluded from the present collection merely on the ground that almost all of them and some fresh ones to boot have been embodied in the edition of that play by Messrs Warnke and Proescholdt. Book The Chief Elizabethan Dramatists

Download or read book The Chief Elizabethan Dramatists written by William Allan Neilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chief Elizabethan Dramatists: Excluding Shakespeare In the treatment of the text, the same principles have been followed as in the editor's dition of Shakespeare's works in the Cambridge Poets Series. Each play has been printed from the most authentic text accessible, and emendations have been adopted sparingly. Lodern stage directions, and divisions into scenes and acts which do not appear in the I editions, have been distinguished by square brackets modern notes of pm at beginning of scenes have been relegated to the footnotes and indications given by the curly copies of the authors' intentions with regard to the reading of the metre have been sinfully preserved, especially in the matter of elided vowels. It is probable that, in the me of most of the present plays, the final -cd of verbs was intended to be pronounced as 3 separate syllable whenever it is spelled in full. The spelling and punctuation have been nodsrnixed throughout, except when the older spelling 1m plied a different pronunciation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Elizabethan Dramatists, Vol. 1 The fond hope to which I gave expression in the preface to the first Series that I should not be obliged, at some future day, again to withdraw (as I had done before) part of the conjectural emendations contained in that volume, has like many other hopes sadly deceived me and I now concur in the persuasion of Gottfried Hermann, my great teacher in textual criticism, that a true verbal critic must be no less ready to withdraw his conjectures than to make them. I now firmly believe, that this is a drawback incident on all verbal criticism. The loss thus caused to the bulk of my book has been more than compensated by the addition of fresh matter, especially the notes on K. Richard II. And Othello. I must not fail to inform the reader that the designation of 'triple ending, ' has been substituted for 'trisyllabic feminine ending' which latter term I had borrowed from Mr, Fleay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beaumont, the Dramatist: A Portrait With Some Account of His Circle, Elizabethan and Jacobean, and of His Association With John Fletcher In this period of resurgent dramatic creativity when once more the literature of the stage enthralls the public and commands the publisher, it is but natural that playwright, play-lover, and scholar alike should turn with renewed and enlightened interest to the models afforded by our Elizabethan masters of the age of gold, to the circumstances of their production and the lives of their imperishable authors. Very close to Shakespeare stood Beaumont and Fletcher; but, though during the past three centuries books about Shakespeare have been as legion and studies of the "twin literary heroes" have run into the hundreds, to Fletcher as an individual but one book has been devoted, and to Beaumont but one. A portrait of either Beaumont or Fletcher demands indeed as its counterpart, painted by the same brush and with alternating strokes, a portrait of his literary partner and friend. But in spirit and in favour the twain are distinct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
