Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Bookbinding for Libraries In the first edition of this book I said that it ought not to be taken as a final authority, but as a set of suggestions which I hoped would arouse interest in the subject of library binding and lead a few to pursue the' subject further. Some of the changes made for this edition indicate that I have followed the topic a little further myself, - I hope with advantage to my readers. Several chapters are new. There are many minor changes and omissions. The lists have been enlarged and brought into one. I had looked into the subject of library binding and discovered the ignorance concerning it of Amer ican librarians, including myself, before I visited Mr. Chivers' beautiful bindery in Bath, England, several years ago. That visit had much to do with the con tents of this little book. Mr. Chivers was quite of my opinion that the only way to induce librarians in America to improve our binding was to persuade us to look into the subject. If the book has led some to do this it has accomplished its purpose. As to the fundamental points in' it, they largely come, I am pleased to confess, from England, by way of that bindery in Bath. Committee on Bookbinding In using these specifications librarians should take note that they are suggestions only and not hard and fast rules to be followed slavishly at all times. It may well be that other methods now in use are giving as good results. When such is the case no change should be made, due Care being taken to ascertain that results from other methods are all that they ought to be. It is claimed for these specifications, however, that if they are followed conscientiously by good binders they will produce books which will give the service required in public library work. Book Manual of Library Bookbinding

Download or read book Manual of Library Bookbinding written by Henry Thomas Coutts and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Library Bookbinding: Practical and Historical The aim of this Manual is not to supersede the existing treatises on the craft of bookbinding, such as those by Messrs Cockerell and Zaehnsdorf, but to supplement such works by giving prominence to those phases of the subject which are of practical interest to the librarian, and incidentally to the bookbinder who specializes in library binding. An endeavour has been made to give a succinct account of the processes of binding at the present day, by describing the methods of hand and machine binding respectively; to indicate the essential features of library binding; to describe and give actual examples of some of the best and most suitable materials for library binding; to describe the different methods of recording and checking books despatched to the binder; to give practical information on the equipment of small binderies in libraries, and on the repairing of books, as well as to give recipes, miscellaneous information, and a glossary of terms. In preparing this work the Library Associations Professional Examinations were kept in view, with the object of affording information useful to students; for this reason an historical sketch of bookbinding has been included, which, it is hoped, will provide an adequate introduction to the subject, the information being drawn from the best sources. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bookbinding, and the Care of Books: A Handbook for Amateurs, Bookbinders Librarians It IS no exaggeration to say that ninety per cent. Of the books bound in leather during the last thirty years will need re binding during the next thirty. The immense expense involved must be a very serious drag on the usefulness of libra ries; and as rebinding is always to some extent damaging to the leaves of a book, it is not only on account of the expense that the necessity for it is to be regretted. The reasons that have led to the pro duction in modern times of bindings that fail to last for a reasonable time, are two fold. The materials are badly selected or prepared, and the method of binding is faulty. Another factor in the decay of bindings, both Old and new, is the bad conditions under which they are Often kept.
