Book Books in Early Modern Norway

Download or read book Books in Early Modern Norway written by Gina Dahl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent decades much has been written about early modern book distribution, but until now Norway has been absent from the discussion. Drawing on book listings, this study seeks to fill this lacuna by exploring the market for books in early modern Norway. Its approach is multifaceted: consideration of the types of books accessed by different elements of Norwegian society is set alongside developments within the book market itself, such as the extended life of popular books, the gradual replacement of Latin by the vernacular and the rise in the eighteenth century in the number of books available on the market. The study demonstrates the internationality of the Norwegian book market while acknowledging specific patterns that determine its Norwegian character.

Book excerpt: Troubled by an inability to find any meaning in his life, the 25-year-old narrator of this deceptively simple novel quits university and eventually arrives at his brother's New York apartment. In a bid to discover what life is all about, he writes lists. He becomes obsessed by time and whether it actually matters. He faxes his meteorologist friend. He endlessly bounces a ball against the wall. He befriends a small boy who lives next door. He yearns to get to the bottom of life and how best to live it. Funny, friendly, enigmatic and frequently poignant - superbly naive.

Book Selected Bibliography on the Climate of Norway

Download or read book Selected Bibliography on the Climate of Norway written by United States. Weather Bureau and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainly sources with climatic data, summarized over a period, were selected for the bibliography. In addition, the years from 1940 to the termination date (April 15, 1960) were emphasized in choosing sources. The initials DWB, DLC and DN-HO used in the abstract titles refer to the Weather Bureau Library, the Library of Congress and the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office Library all in Washington, D.C. Preparation of these abstracts was done in the Foreign Area Section of the Office of Climatology. All scales with brackets are measured with a natural map scale indicator from maps with latitude lines and are only an estimation. Those scales without brackets in the abstracts are given on the climatic maps or a legend scale provided. On maps without parallels, latitude lines were estimated and a natural map scale used to obtain an approximate map scale; these are indicated by parenthesis. (Author).

Book The Phonology of Norwegian

Download or read book The Phonology of Norwegian written by Gjert Kristoffersen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A the end of the fourteenth century, Norway, having previously been an independent kingdom, became by conquest a province of Denmark and remained so for three centuries. In1814, as part of the fall-out from the Napoleonic wars, the country became a largely independent nation within the monarchy of Sweden. By this time, however, Danish had become the language of government, commerce, and education, as well as of the middle and upper classes. Nationalistic Norwegians sought to reestablish native identity by creating and promulgating a new language based partly on rural dialects and partly on Old Norse. The upper and middle classes sought to retain a form of Norwegian close to Danish that would be intelligible to themselves and to their neighbours in Sweden and Denmark. The controversy has gone on ever since. One result is that the standard dictionaries of Norwegian ignore pronunciation, for no version can be counted as 'received'. Another is that there has been considerable variety and change in Norwe

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore: A magnificent coming-of-age story steeped in nostalgia, “a masterly novel” (The New York Times Book Review) blending the music, the mood, and the ethos that were the sixties with a young man’s hopeless and heroic first love. Now with a new introduction by the author. Toru, a serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. As Naoko retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman. Stunning and elegiac, Norwegian Wood first propelled Haruki Murakami into the forefront of the literary scene.

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature and Theater written by Jan Sjåvik and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-04-19 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of Scandinavia is amazingly rich and varied, consisting of the works produced by the countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and stretching from the ancient Norse Sagas to the present day. While much of it is unknown outside of the region, some has gained worldwide popularity, including the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, the stories of Isak Dinesen, and the plays of Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg. While obviously including the area's most famous works, the Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature and Theater also provides information on lesser known authors and currents trends, literary circles and journals, and historical background. This is accomplished through a list of acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries, which together make this reference the most comprehensive and up to date work of its kind related to Scandinavian literature and theater available anywhere.
