Book The Protectors Other Stories

Download or read book The Protectors Other Stories written by Nasir Mahmood and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories takes its title from one of the stories contained in it: The Protectors. All stories are basically romantic in nature, but they are not simple love stories. Their themes have all the colours, and their myriad shades, to afford you a panoramic view of the world we live in. The first story, for example, is that of a boy whose rebellious nature, not accepting the norms of a corrupt society, struggles to achieve a job on the basis of his qualification, and not on the recommendation of a friend. Another story deals in defence of the motherland from the vicious attack of a rival force. Then there is a story which gives a graphic picture of a poverty-stricken housing scheme where women, forgetting about their self-respect, stoop so low as to adopt a life style, both execrable and pitiable but there are women and there are women! In brief, the book touches on unemployment, indignity of a religious family, and inheritance inciting to murder. A story each describes the horrendous custom of doing away with female foetuses, the ugly face of feudalism, and foundering efforts of a courtesan to escape to a righteous life. Last but not least is the story of educated youth, who for want of any reasonable job, resort to robbery. The book takes you along on a journey which unravels a picture of unspeakable misery some people are subjected to. One would feel the milk of human kindness is drying up fast! One could read these stories with a view to killing time, but if they pause and think well, that is exactly what these stories are aimed at.

Book The Source of Life and Other Stories

Download or read book The Source of Life and Other Stories written by Beth Bosworth and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-divorce dating is one more cause for celebration (or a quick call in to the police) in Beth Bosworth's revelatory new book, The Source of Life and Other Stories. The spine of this collection is a series of linked stories about Ruth Stein, a Brooklyn author whose first book has exposed her father's abuses; while the voice here, speaking across a lifetime, ranges from bittersweet to humorous to lethal. In other stories Bosworth's narrators—a mother left to care for her son's suicidal dog, an editor haunted by a dog-eared manuscript—seem to grab hold of the reins and run off with their fates. Meanwhile Bosworth explores the extended family, the bonds of friendship, an apocalyptic Vermont, the rank yet redeemable Gowanus Canal; also rites of passage, race relations, divorce, middle-aged romance, dementia, funerals, alcoholism, and the Jewish religion. Reality is just another stumbling block for Bosworth's characters, who might help themselves but don't always choose to. There are leaps of faith here, nonetheless, as the collection dispenses a kind of narrative psychotropic for survival and redemption, with a chaser of humor mixed in.

Book A Family Secret and Other Stories

Download or read book A Family Secret and Other Stories written by Bijoya Sawian and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A postman turns up with an unexpected letter one rainy afternoon in Cherrapunji, a letter that will turn fourteen-year-old Saphira's world upside down. Dalinia's life seems perfect, with a successful husband, beautiful children and a well-appointed home. But the arrival of a handsome competitor on the manicured greens of the Shillong golf course brings back a flood of unwanted memories of her troubled past. Told in a simple, lyrical style, Bijoya Sawian's collection of ten short stories is not only an enthralling read but, like her debut novel Shadow Men, transports the reader to a place little known to outsiders: Meghalaya. Strains of love, loss and longing run through all these stories, whose endings are not mere shocks, but revelations. Both her books should be read for a better understanding of India's northeast - its communities, its landscape, and in particular, the lives of the women who live there.

Book North by Northeast and Other Stories

Download or read book North by Northeast and Other Stories written by P.S.Thangkhiew and published by Partridge Publishing India. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of the ten tales in this collection has a plot connected with the game of golf. The stories are also linked by an underlying theme based on the element of chance altering ordinary course of events. The appearance of a common character in almost all of them serves to heighten a sense of involvement as the different plots unfold. With a fine eye for detail and nuances in the human condition, as seen through the protagonists in each story, Parmarsan S. Thangkhiews narrations weave seamlessly through golf, a prince among sports. Often, the authors wry sense of humor is also made all too evident, an exercise that is rare among present day Indian writers writing in English. A toast of a read!
