Given that the delivery plays an important role in how a speech is perceived, students of political communication are missing out on a sizable part of the picture. In this dissertation, I present three studies, two on vocal delivery, one on facial expressions, which explore the role of nonverbal communication in the context of political representation and elections. The first of these chapters develops a theory of style-shifting, wherein politicians change their vocal register in response to what is considered appropriate for a given context and audience. When speaking in Congress, politicians rely on a formal style, while on the campaign trail, they opt for a more informal delivery. I find evidence for this hypothesis by applying methods from phonetics and natural language processing to the videos U.S. senators release on their YouTube channels. In the second chapter, I test whether voters actually care about this difference. In a survey experiment, I present respondents with a short speech recorded by a voice actor, which is presented either in a formal or informal manner. The participants largely prefer the formal version. In the final empirical chapter, I study media bias in the way prominent news outlets portray the facial expressions of the 2016 presidential candidates and their supporters. I find that while Hillary Clinton and her followers appear to be happier on average, media outlets do not differ systematically in the way they portray this relationship. Together, these chapters demonstrate that nonverbal political communication is a subtle but important component of the way politicians comport themselves in public.

The current volume challenges this fragmentary pattern of inquiry, and adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of citizenship that offers new insights and integrates previously disparate research agendas. It also suggests the possibility of informed interventions aimed at meeting new challenges faced by citizens in modern democracies. The volume is organized around five themes related to democratic citizenship: citizen knowledge about politics; persuasion processes and intervention processes; group identity and perception of individual citizens and social groups; hate crimes and intolerance; and the challenge of rapid changes in technology and mass media.
