Book Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations of the Second Order

Download or read book Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations of the Second Order written by N.V. Krylov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the It isn't that they can't see the right end and begin with the solution. It is that they can't see answers. Then one day, perhaps the problem. you will find the final question. G.K. Chesterton. The Scandal of 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Father Brown 'The Point of a Pin'. Feathers' in R. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of mono graphs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theor.etical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces.

Book Nonlinear Elliptic Equations of the Second Order

Download or read book Nonlinear Elliptic Equations of the Second Order written by Qing Han and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear elliptic differential equations are a diverse subject with important applications to the physical and social sciences and engineering. They also arise naturally in geometry. In particular, much of the progress in the area in the twentieth century was driven by geometric applications, from the Bernstein problem to the existence of Kähler–Einstein metrics. This book, designed as a textbook, provides a detailed discussion of the Dirichlet problems for quasilinear and fully nonlinear elliptic differential equations of the second order with an emphasis on mean curvature equations and on Monge–Ampère equations. It gives a user-friendly introduction to the theory of nonlinear elliptic equations with special attention given to basic results and the most important techniques. Rather than presenting the topics in their full generality, the book aims at providing self-contained, clear, and “elementary” proofs for results in important special cases. This book will serve as a valuable resource for graduate students or anyone interested in this subject.

Book Sobolev and Viscosity Solutions for Fully Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations

Download or read book Sobolev and Viscosity Solutions for Fully Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Equations written by N. V. Krylov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on first boundary-value problems for fully nonlinear second-order uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. We look for solutions in Sobolev classes, local or global, or for viscosity solutions. Most of the auxiliary results, such as Aleksandrov's elliptic and parabolic estimates, the Krylov–Safonov and the Evans–Krylov theorems, are taken from old sources, and the main results were obtained in the last few years. Presentation of these results is based on a generalization of the Fefferman–Stein theorem, on Fang-Hua Lin's like estimates, and on the so-called “ersatz” existence theorems, saying that one can slightly modify “any” equation and get a “cut-off” equation that has solutions with bounded derivatives. These theorems allow us to prove the solvability in Sobolev classes for equations that are quite far from the ones which are convex or concave with respect to the Hessians of the unknown functions. In studying viscosity solutions, these theorems also allow us to deal with classical approximating solutions, thus avoiding sometimes heavy constructions from the usual theory of viscosity solutions.

Book Lectures on Elliptic and Parabolic Equations in Holder Spaces

Download or read book Lectures on Elliptic and Parabolic Equations in Holder Spaces written by Nikolaĭ Vladimirovich Krylov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures concentrate on fundamentals of the modern theory of linear elliptic and parabolic equations in H older spaces. Krylov shows that this theory - including some issues of the theory of nonlinear equations - is based on some general and extremely powerful ideas and some simple computations. The main object of study is the first boundary-value problems for elliptic and parabolic equations, with some guidelines concerning other boundary-value problems such as the Neumann or oblique derivative problems or problems involving higher-order elliptic operators acting on the boundary. Numerical approximations are also discussed. This book, containing 200 exercises, aims to provide a good understanding of what kind of results are available and what kinds of techniques are used to obtain them.

Book Second Order Equations of Elliptic and Parabolic Type

Download or read book Second Order Equations of Elliptic and Parabolic Type written by E. M. Landis and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997-12-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on elliptic and parabolic equations emphasize existence and uniqueness of solutions. By contrast, this book focuses on the qualitative properties of solutions. In addition to the discussion of classical results for equations with smooth coefficients (Schauder estimates and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for elliptic equations; the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation), the book describes properties of solutions to second order elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients near the boundary and at infinity. The book presents a fine elementary introduction to the theory of elliptic and parabolic equations of second order. The precise and clear exposition is suitable for graduate students as well as for research mathematicians who want to get acquainted with this area of the theory of partial differential equations.

Download or read book Elliptic and Parabolic Equations with Discontinuous Coefficients written by Antonino Maugeri and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2000-12-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unifies the different approaches in studying elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations with discontinuous coefficients. To the enlarging market of researchers in applied sciences, mathematics and physics, it gives concrete answers to questions suggested by non-linear models. Providing an up-to date survey on the results concerning elliptic and parabolic operators on a high level, the authors serve the reader in doing further research. Being themselves active researchers in the field, the authors describe both on the level of good examples and precise analysis, the crucial role played by such requirements on the coefficients as the Cordes condition, Campanato's nearness condition, and vanishing mean oscillation condition. They present the newest results on the basic boundary value problems for operators with VMO coefficients and non-linear operators with discontinuous coefficients and state a lot of open problems in the field.

Book Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations

Download or read book Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations written by Luis A. Caffarelli and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the book is to extend classical regularity theorems for solutions of linear elliptic partial differential equations to the context of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. This class of equations often arises in control theory, optimization, and other applications. The authors give a detailed presentation of all the necessary techniques. Instead of treating these techniques in their greatest generality, they outline the key ideas and prove the results needed for developing the subsequent theory. Topics discussed in the book include the theory of viscosity solutions for nonlinear equations, the Alexandroff estimate and Krylov-Safonov Harnack-type inequality for viscosity solutions, uniqueness theory for viscosity solutions, Evans and Krylov regularity theory for convex fully nonlinear equations, and regularity theory for fully nonlinear equations with variable coefficients.

Book Nonlinear Elliptic Equations and Nonassociative Algebras

Download or read book Nonlinear Elliptic Equations and Nonassociative Algebras written by Nikolai Nadirashvili and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents applications of noncommutative and nonassociative algebras to constructing unusual (nonclassical and singular) solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations of second order. The methods described in the book are used to solve a longstanding problem of the existence of truly weak, nonsmooth viscosity solutions. Moreover, the authors provide an almost complete description of homogeneous solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations. It is shown that even in the very restricted setting of "Hessian equations", depending only on the eigenvalues of the Hessian, these equations admit homogeneous solutions of all orders compatible with known regularity for viscosity solutions provided the space dimension is five or larger. To the contrary, in dimension four or less the situation is completely different, and our results suggest strongly that there are no nonclassical homogeneous solutions at all in dimensions three and four. Thus this book gives a complete list of dimensions where nonclassical homogeneous solutions to fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations do exist; this should be compared with the situation of, say, ten years ago when the very existence of nonclassical viscosity solutions was not known.

Book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Free Boundaries Elliptic equations

Download or read book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Free Boundaries Elliptic equations written by J. I. Díaz and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Research Note the author brings together the body of known work and presents many recent results relating to nonlinear partial differential equations that give rise to a free boundary--usually the boundary of the set where the solution vanishes identically. The formation of such a boundary depends on an adequate balance between two of the terms of the equation that represent the particular characteristics of the phenomenon under consideration: diffusion, absorption, convection, evolution etc. These balances do not occur in the case of a linear equation or an arbitrary nonlinear equation. Their characterization is studied for several classes of nonlinear equations relating to applications such as chemical reactions, non-Newtonian fluids, flow through porous media and biological populations. In this first volume, the free boundary for nonlinear elliptic equations is discussed. A second volume dealing with parabolic and hyperbolic equations is in preparation.
