Book excerpt: Viewing physical theories as symbolic constructions came to the fore in the middle of the nineteenth century with the emancipation of the classical theory of the electromagnetic field from mechanics; most notably this happened through the work of Helmholtz, Hertz, Poincaré, and later Weyl. The epistemological problems that nourished this development are today highlighted within quantum field theory. The present essay starts off with a concise and non-technical outline of the firmly based aspects of relativistic quantum field theory, i.e. the very successful description of subnuclear phenomena. The particular methods, by which these different aspects have to be accessed, then get described as distinct facets of quantum field theory. The authors show how these different facets vary with respect to the relation between quantum fields and associated particles. Thus, by emphasising the respective role of various basic concepts involved, the authors claim that only a very general epistemic approach can properly account for this diversity - an account they trace back to the philosophical writings of the aforementioned physicists and mathematicians. Finally, what they call their semiotic perspective on quantum field theory gets related to recent discussions within the philosophy of science and turns out to act as a counterbalance to, for instance, structural realism.

The use of conformal symmet. ry has been of central interest in recent years, and was a main subject at. t. he ASI. Conformal invariant quantum field theory describes statistical mechanical systems exactly at a critical point, and can be analysed to a remarkable ext. ent. by group t. heoretical methods. Very strong results have been obtained for 2-dimensional systems. Conformal field theory is also the basis of string theory, which offers some hope of providing a unified t. heory of all interactions between elementary particles. Accordingly, a number of lectures and seminars were presented on these two topics. After syst. ematic introductory lectures, conformal field theory on Riemann surfaces, orbifolds, sigma models, and application of loop group theory and Grassmannians were discussed, and some ideas on modular geometry were presented. Other lectures combined' traditional techniques of constructive quant. um field theory with new methods such as the use of index-t. heorems and infinite dimensional (Kac Moody) symmetry groups. The problems encountered in a quantum mechanical description of black holes were discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: We investigate consequences of a description of nuclear physics in terms of a relativistic field theory. The model Lagrangian contained baryons, sigma-mesons and omega-mesons, and was subsequently extended to include also .pi.-mesons and rho-mesons. The most important successes of this approach are discussed. In addition to the description of known nuclear structure the field theoretical approach may reveal entirely new nuclear phenomena, based on the explicit treatment of mesonic degrees of freedom. A phenomenological nuclear Lagrangian can be constructed, where the isovector Lorentz-vector rho-meson is described by a non-Abelian gauge field, that acquires its mass spontaneously due to the non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of a Higgs field. The gauge sector solition solution is discussed. For the SU(2) gauge field theory with the Higgs field in the fundamental representation no non-trival topological conservation laws hold. This indicates that the soliton is unstable. Fermions cannot stabilize the soliton solution energetically, because only zero-binding-energy solutions for the fermions exist. Fermions in the presence of the soliton are discussed. Also, it is attempted to achieve stability of the soliton solution by coupling it to the .pi.-field. Describing the .pi.-field by the nonlinear sigma-model yields a conserved topological quantum number. In the linear sigma-model the soliton can only be stabilized energetically. 32 references. Walecka was recently used with great success to describe the properties of nuclear matter as well as the structure of the finite static nuclei. Starting from Walecka's Lagrangian the nucleons are represented by single particle spinors, which are determined by a Dirac equation containing a repulsive mean neutral vector field V/sub .mu./ and an attractive mean isoscalar field sigma. Both fields satisfy Klein-Gordon equations. Their source terms are again determined by the spinors. This relativistic mean field model was applied to the dynamics of two colliding slabs. They are translational invariant in two transverse dimensions and consist of spin and isospin symmetric nuclear matter. By specification of appropriate initial conditions for the collision of two equal slabs, the system of coupled Klein-Gordon-Dirac equations was solved for lab bombarding energies per nucleon up to 400 MeV. At low energies the results are identical with TDHF results. The damping of the collision, the phenomenon of high nuclear density, and the effect of retardation during the reaction are studied.
