  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book Respecting Rights written by U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines and compares the content of laws prohibiting blasphemy ("blasphemy laws") worldwide through the lens of international and human rights law principles. The laws examined in this study prohibit or criminalize the expression of opinions deemed "blasphemous," or counter to majority views or religious belief systems, and many impose serious, often criminal, penalties. Blasphemy laws are actively enforced in many states throughout the world. Many governments deem repeal not feasible or desirable and justify the prohibition and criminalization of blasphemy as necessary to promote religious harmony. This study seeks to evaluate the language and content of blasphemy laws to understand what aspects of these laws adhere to--or deviate from--international and human rights law principles. A better understanding of the laws' compliance with these principles may assist in the public policy community in developing clear, specifically-tailored recommendations for areas for reform. Book excerpt: After 9/11. George W. Bush's administration declared that they were going to have to work through 'the dark side'. And they did: they turned their backs on international law and on America's history of respecting human rights. They wanted only legal advice that made it okay to torture, and they made sure they got it. Voices of dissent were sidelined, while low level officials brainstormed interrogation techniques and took their lead from Jack Bauer in 24. In Torture Team, Philippe Sands tracks down and interviews those responsible, and makes a compelling case that, in an ugly blotch on Americda's recent past, war crimes were committed for which no one has yet been held to account.

Book The Nuremberg Trial and International Law

Download or read book The Nuremberg Trial and International Law written by George Ginsburgs and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1990-09-26 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stationing of foreign armed forces abroad in peacetime has been a constant & distinctive feature of the post-1945 bipolar world. This book is the first systematic study of the subject to look beyond the areas of criminal & civil jurisdiction to broader issues of international law arising out of the establishment & use of foreign military installations in time of peace. Implementation of basing agreements between states sending & states hosting foreign armed forces has resulted in a large body of state practice that includes such major international incidents as the U.S. air raid on Libya in 1986 & the U.S. intervention in Panama in 1989. This book assesses the future of foreign military installations against the background of the end of the Cold War, the unification of Germany, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, & the emerging European security order.
