Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a time for rhetorical qualifications. That time was not No Quarter November. During November 2018, Douglas Wilson hoisted the Jolly Roger and went merrily swashbuckling his way through the culture and the church. Where he might usually make careful qualifications and check all the "on the other hand" boxes, he instead wrote a series of blog posts that slashed right to the heart of various matters. From the worst of the worldly (sexual chaos and atheistic evolution) to the frailties of the faithful (lame church music and foppish liturgical garb), both foes and friends got skewered. This book is the resultant shish-kebab.

Download or read book Evangellyfish written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEST FICTION AWARD - Christianity Today 2012 Evangellyfish is a ruthless, grimly amused, and above all honest look at one of the darkest corners in the western world. Douglas Wilson, a pastor of more than thirty years, paints a vivid and painful picture of evangelical boomchurch leadership. . . in bed. Chad Lester's kingdom is found in the Midwest. His voice crawls over the airwaves, his books are read by millions (before he reads them), and thousands ride the escalators into the sanctuary every Sunday. And Saturday. And Wednesday, too. He is the head pastor of Camel Creek--a CEO of Soul. And souls come cheap, so he has no overhead. When Lester is (falsely) accused of molesting a young male counselee, his universe begins to crumble. He is a sexual predator, yes. But strictly straight (and deeply offended that anyone would suggest otherwise). Detectives, reporters, assistant pastors, and old lovers and pay-offs all come out to play. John Mitchell is also a pastor, but he has no kingdom to speak of--only smalltime choir feuds. He is thrilled at the great man's fall, but his joy quickly fades when the imploding Lester calls him--and a lover or two--for help. How low can grace go? Whores, thieves, and junkies, sure. But pastors?

Download or read book Confederate Rage Yankee Wrath written by George S Burkhardt and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2007-05-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative study proves the existence of a de facto Confederate policy of giving no quarter to captured black combatants during the Civil War—killing them instead of treating them as prisoners of war. Rather than looking at the massacres as a series of discrete and random events, this work examines each as part of a ruthless but standard practice. Author George S. Burkhardt details a fascinating case that the Confederates followed a consistent pattern of murder against the black soldiers who served in Northern armies after Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. He shows subsequent retaliation by black soldiers and further escalation by the Confederates, including the execution of some captured white Federal soldiers, those proscribed as cavalry raiders, foragers, or house-burners, and even some captured in traditional battles. Further disproving the notion of Confederates as victims who were merely trying to defend their homes, Burkhardt explores the motivations behind the soldiers’ actions and shows the Confederates’ rage at the sight of former slaves—still considered property, not men—fighting them as equals on the battlefield. Burkhardt’s narrative approach recovers important dimensions of the war that until now have not been fully explored by historians, effectively describing the systemic pattern that pushed the conflict toward a black flag, take-no-prisoners struggle.
Download or read book Classical Me Classical Thee Squander Not Thine Education written by Rebekah Merkle and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everyone is so busy giving the classical education to the students that I'm not sure people have taken the time to actually tell them why it matters..." Rebekah Merkle knows which high school classes you like and which you roll your eyes at, which books you enjoy and which you kinda skim. That's because she went through this whole thing called classical education, too: She was a guinea pig in one of the very first classical Christian schools in the country. Written for students by a (former) student, Classical Me, Classical Thee is lighthearted and--most importantly for you busy high-schoolers--very short. It has a simple goal: to explain why you students are doing what you do in class. (SPOILER: Grades aren't the point--you won't use your knowledge of the Iliad Book 5 every year until you die.) What you do in class is a drill -- and nobody drills for the sake of the drill. You do drills so that you can win the game. The real tragedy, though, would be if you didn't know you were doing drills... or didn't know there was a game at all. Grades aren't the point. So drill to win.

Download or read book The Doors of the Sea written by David Bentley Hart and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As news reports of the horrific December 2004 tsunami in Asia reached the rest of the world, commentators were quick to seize upon the disaster as proof of either God s power or God s nonexistence, asking over and over, How could a good and loving God if such exists allow such suffering? In The Doors of the Sea David Bentley Hart speaks at once to those skeptical of Christian faith and to those who use their Christian faith to rationalize senseless human suffering. He calls both to recognize in the worst catastrophes not the providential will of God but rather the ongoing struggle between the rebellious powers that enslave the world and the God who loves it wholly.
Download or read book Why Children Matter written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Garden of Eden, there was only one "No." Everything else was "Yes." In this short book on Christian childrearing, Douglas Wilson points out that we have a Father who delights in us and makes it easy for us to love and obey him. If that is the kind of Father we have, shouldn't we earthly parents do the same? Wilson explains how parents should not just try to get their kids to obey a set of rules or to make their house so fun that following the rules is always easy. Instead, he calls for parents to instill in their kids a love for God and His standards that will serve them well all their days. This book also features an appendix in which Doug and his wife Nancy answer various parents' questions about various applications of the principles discussed in this book.
Download or read book Gashmu Saith It written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, Gashmu and the enemies of Israel mocked him: "It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel..." (Neh. 6:6). Too many Christians building communities today take the taunts of every modern-day Gashmu seriously. Community is a buzzword, and it turns out there's a lot of bad advice about how to build one. In Gashmu Saith It, Douglas Wilson includes forty years of experience for Christians wanting to build robust communities without retreat or compromise on the foundation of the Gospel. This book is full of wisdom: Get calluses. Be loyal. Fight sin. Build walls on the outside and a church in the middle.

Book excerpt: On a transatlantic cruise to New York, sculptor Rhys Matherton struggles to piece his life back together after losing his mother, inheriting a fortune, and finding out his father isn't his father after all. He spills a tray of drinks on a handsome stranger, then he finds himself up against a wall getting the best hand-job he's ever had. And for the first time in his life, he feels whole. Rhys enjoys the company of Silas Quint, but for the eerie way no one pays attention to them even while they kiss in a crowded bar. Silas explains he's a forest fae able to glamour the room around them--and more importantly, that he's on the cruise to hunt vampires. Rhys thinks Silas is full of it, until he discovers vampires are real, and he's part of their main course. Silas Quint can't be distracted by a human lover, even one as lovely as Rhys. Stuck in the middle of the ocean, he has barely enough energy to hunt the vampires he's been sent to destroy. Rhys is full of the one thing Silas needs most--the element of living plants. Only sucking energy from Rhys would make Silas as soulless as the creatures he hunts. How can he keep Rhys safe, without becoming like the very monsters he hunts?
Download or read book Apologetics in the Void written by Douglas Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Street-Level Apologetics: Where the Reason Meets the Road While the other titles in this series have been interactions with the best-selling published works of internationally renowned atheists, this fourth volume brings things down to a local scale. For several months in 2003-4, Douglas Wilson was involved in an ongoing debate on a Moscow, Idaho, listserv about various matters of concern to secularists. His contributions to the conversation (lightly edited) are collected in this book. Though the names of his opponents aren't as big (and have, in fact, been changed for this publication), Wilson's humor and sharp-mindedness are as bold and boisterous as ever, as is his concern for the souls of those who reject Christ. With a pastor's care for lost sheep, he calls them all to reason and to repentance. Douglas Wilson has been the pastor of Christ Church, Moscow, Idaho, for over forty years. He and His wife, Nancy, have three children and seventeen grandchildren. Doug is the author of scores of books, including God Is. How Christianity Explains Everything. You can read his blog at dougwils.com, follow him on Twitter at @douglaswils, and watch him as the host of Man Rampant.
