Download or read book Optical Networks Recent Advances written by Lu Ruan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid growth of bandwidth demand from network users and the advances in optical technologies, optical networks with multiterabits per-second capacity has received significant interest from both researchers and practitioners. Optical networks deployment raises a number of challenging problems that require innovative solutions, including net work architectures, scalable and fast network management, resource efficient routing and wavelength assignment algorithms, QoS support and scheduling algorithms, and switch and router architectures. In this book, we put together some important developments in this exiting area during last several years. Some of the articles are research papers and some are surveys. All articles were reviewed by two reviewers. The paper, "On Dynamic Wavelength Assignment in WDM Optical Networks," by Alanyali gives an overview of some issues in the analy sis and synthesis of dynamic wavelength assignment policies for optical WDM networks and illustrates a new method of analysis. The paper by Ellinas and Bala, "Wavelength Assignment Algorithms for WDM Ring Architectures," presents two optimal wavelength assignment algorithms that assign the minimum number of wavelengths between nodes on WDM rings to achieve full mesh connectivity. In the paper, "Optimal Placement of Wavelength Converters in WDM Networks for Parallel and Distributed Computing Systems," Jia et al.

Book Routing and Wavelength Assignment for WDM based Optical Networks

Download or read book Routing and Wavelength Assignment for WDM based Optical Networks written by Bijoy Chand Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth treatment of routing and wavelength assignment for optical networks, and focuses specifically on quality-of-service and fault resiliency issues. It reports on novel approaches for the development of routing and wavelength assignment schemes for fault-resilient optical networks, which improve their performance in terms of signal quality, call blocking, congestion level and reliability, without a substantial increase in network setup cost. The book first presents a solution for reducing the effect of the wavelength continuity constraint during the routing and wavelength assignment phase. Further, it reports on an approach allowing the incorporation of a traffic grooming mechanism with routing and wavelength assignment to enhance the effective channel utilization of a given capacity optical network using fewer electrical-optical-electrical conversions. As a third step, it addresses a quality of service provision scheme for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-based optical networks. Lastly, the book describes the inclusion of a tree-based fault resilience scheme in priority-based dispersion-reduced wavelength assignment schemes for the purpose of improving network reliability, while maintaining a better utilization of network resources. Mainly intended for graduate students and researchers, the book provides them with extensive information on both fundamental and advanced technologies for routing and wavelength assignment in optical networks. The topics covered will also be of interest to network planners and designers.

Book Design of Optical WDM Networks

Download or read book Design of Optical WDM Networks written by Byrav Ramamurthy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lo, soul! seest thou not God's purpose from the first? The earth to be spann'd, connected by net-work From Passage to India! Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass", 1900. The Internet is growing at a tremendous rate today. New services, such as telephony and multimedia, are being added to the pure data-delivery framework of yesterday. Such high demands on capacity could lead to a "bandwidth-crunch" at the core wide-area network resulting in degra dation of service quality. Fortunately, technological innovations have emerged which can provide relief to the end-user to overcome the In ternet's well-known delay and bandwidth limitations. At the physical layer, a major overhaul of existing networks has been envisaged from electronic media (such as twisted-pair and cable) to optical fibers - in the wide area, in the metropolitan area, and even in the local area set tings. In order to exploit the immense bandwidth potential of the optical fiber, interesting multiplexing techniques have been developed over the years. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is such a promising tech nique in which multiple channels are operated along a single fiber si multaneously, each on a different wavelength. These channels can be independently modulated to accommodate dissimilar bit rates and data formats, if so desired. Thus, WDM carves up the huge bandwidth of an optical fiber into channels whose bandwidths (1-10 Gbps) are compati ble with peak electronic processing speed.

Book Study of Routing and Wavelength Assignment Problem and Performance Analysis of Genetic Algorithm for All Optical Networks

Download or read book Study of Routing and Wavelength Assignment Problem and Performance Analysis of Genetic Algorithm for All Optical Networks written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All-optical networks uses the concept of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The problem of routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) is critically important for increasing the efficiency of wavelength routed All-optical networks. For the given set of connections, the task of setting up lightpaths by routing and assigning a wavelength to each connection is called routing and wavelength allocation problem. In work to date, the problem has been formulated as integer linear programming problem. There are two variations of the problem: static and dynamic, in the static case, the traffic is known where as in dynamic case, connection request arrive in some random fashion. Here we adopt the static view of the problem. We have studied the Genetic Algorithm to solve the RWA problem and also we studied a modified Genetic Algorithm with reference to the basic model. We studied a novel opimization problem formulations that offer the promise of radical improvements over the existing methods. We adopt a static view of the problem and saw new integer- linear programming formulations, which can be addressed with highly efficient linear programming methods and yield optimal or near-optimal RWA policies. All-optical WDM networks are chracterized by multiple metrics (hop-count, cost, delay), but generally routing protocols only optimize one metric, using some variant shortest path algorithm (e.g., the Dijkstra, all-pairs and Bellman-ford algorithms). The multicriteria RWA problem has been solved combining the relevant metrics or objective functions. The performance of RWA algorithms have been studied across the different standard networks. The performance of both the algorithms are studied with respect to the time taken for making routing decision, number of wavelengths required and cost of the requested lightpaths. It has been observed that the modified genetic algorithm performed better than the existing algorithm with respect to the time and cost parameters.

The volume editors and contributing authors have endeavoured to capture a substantial subset of the key problems and known solutions to these problems. All of the chapters are original contributions from leading international researchers. The chapters address a wide variety of topics, including the state of the art in WDM technology, physical components that make up WDM fiber-optic networks, medium access protocols, wavelength routed networks, optical access networks, network management, and performance evaluation of wavelength routing networks. The chapters also survey critical points in past research and tackle more recent problems. Practitioners and network product engineers interested in current state-of-the-art information beyond textbook-type coverage, and graduate students commencing research in this area, will appreciate the concise - and pertinent - information presented herein.
