Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside Denali National Park and Preserve is a story about wayfarers in the heart of Alaska— campground hosts who quickly become enchanted with the savage River Campground in Denali Park and Preserve, its history, its wildlife, and its guests to the campground from all over the world. The campground is near the location of the first tent camp in the park where visitors came by horse and later touring car from the railway station twelve miles away. it's the first place along the park road where Mt. Mckinley, the highest mountain on the North American continent, can be seen. The stories of the early visitors— their desires to see wildlife and the mountain—are much the same as those of current campers. The people who are passers-by of this place may leave a legacy or a footprint, but they all take with them memories of a very special place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spring 'breakup' of snow and ice on the Delta River, Alaska, was monitored in 1967. Breakup on this braided river was a relatively calm event, with gradual development of open-water channels from headwaters to mouth. Air temperature data at Big Delta, near the mouth of the river, indicated an accumulation of 30 positive degree-days (F) above 32F, using mean daily values, prior to first observation of continuous open water from headwaters to mouth; a corresponding value, but using maximum daily air temperatures, was 224 degree-days (F). A photographic sequence of breakup at several points along the river is included. (Author).
Download or read book Rhythm of the Wild written by Kim Heacox and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Kim Heacox, the acclaimed author of The Only Kayak and John Muir and the Ice That Started a Fire, comes Rhythm of the Wild, an Alaska memoir focused on Denali National Park. Music runs through every page of this book, as do stories, rivers and wolves. At its heart, Rhythm of the Wild is a love story. It begins in 1981 and ends in 2014, yet reaches beyond the arc of time. Author and mountaineer Jonathan Waterman has called Heacox “our northern Edward Abbey.” In this book we find out why. We hitchhike with Kim through Idaho, camp on the Colorado Plateau, and fly off the sand cliffs of Hangman Creek with a little terrier named Super Max, the Wonder Dog. We meet Zed, the Aborigine; Nine Fingers, the blues guitarist; and Adolph Murie, the legendary wildlife biologist, who dared to say that wolves should be protected, not persecuted. Kim also reprises in this book his friend Richard Steele, a beloved character from The Only Kayak. Some books are larger than their actual subject—this is one. Part memoir, part exploration of Denali’s inspiring natural and human history, and part conservation polemic, Rhythm of the Wild ranges from funny to provocative. It’s a celebration of—and a plea to restore and defend—the vibrant earth and our rightful place in it.
