Book Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material NORM VI

Download or read book Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material NORM VI written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All minerals and raw materials contain radionuclides of natural origin. For most human activities involving minerals and raw materials, the levels of exposure to these radionuclides are not significantly greater than normal background levels. However, certain work activities can give rise to significantly enhanced exposures that may need to be controlled by regulation. Material giving rise to these enhanced exposures has become known as naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM). Historically, most regulatory attention has been focused on the mining and processing of uranium ore, because such activities are a direct consequence of the radioactivity in the ore and form part of the nuclear fuel cycle. Over the past decade or two, however, more and more countries have introduced measures to regulate exposures arising from a wider range of natural sources. The NORM VI symposium ... provided an important opportunity to review the developments that had taken place during the three year period since the NORM V symposium in 2007. This period, which began with the publication of new radiation protection recommendations by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, was characterized by ongoing activities to revise international standards on radiation protection and safety. These Proceedings contain all 38 papers accepted for oral presentation and four rapporteur reports, as well as a summary that concludes with the main findings of the symposium."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Evaluation of Guidelines for Exposures to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials

Download or read book Evaluation of Guidelines for Exposures to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naturally occurring radionuclides are found throughout the earth's crust, and they form part of the natural background of radiation to which all humans are exposed. Many human activities-such as mining and milling of ores, extraction of petroleum products, use of groundwater for domestic purposes, and living in houses-alter the natural background of radiation either by moving naturally occurring radionuclides from inaccessible locations to locations where humans are present or by concentrating the radionuclides in the exposure environment. Such alterations of the natural environment can increase, sometimes substantially, radiation exposures of the public. Exposures of the public to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) that result from human activities that alter the natural environment can be subjected to regulatory control, at least to some degree. The regulation of public exposures to such technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory and advisory organizations is the subject of this study by the National Research Council's Committee on the Evaluation of EPA Guidelines for Exposures to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.

Book Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials

Download or read book Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials written by T.Rick Irvin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials - known in the industry as NORM -has become an important part of the regular training required for workers in oil and gas production, refinery and petrochemical manufacturing, and in certain types of mining. Proper handling of NORM-contaminated wastes and use of appropriate radiation detection and protective equipment are now understood to be important components of good worker safety programs. Until now, no practical, easy-to-read, book was available to supplement worker training courses on NORM management. Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials: Principles and Practices fills this void by providing, in a single publication, an ideal reference for industry managers, supervisors and line personnel. The book stresses the proper handling and management of NORM contaminated wastes and provides a firm understanding of the chemical properties of radioactive agents, their toxicological effects, and the appropriate containerization and disposal methods for these materials.

Book excerpt: "This publication is the proceedings of the Seventh International Symposium on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), which was organized in cooperation with the IAEA as part of its programme to promote application of the safety standards to natural sources of radiation and to disseminate information to Member States. NORM VII provided an opportunity to review the many developments that had taken place over the past three years since the previous symposium in this series. This period was characterized by ongoing activities to revise international standards on radiation protection and safety and the further implementation of these standards in many countries. The proceedings contain 48 oral presentations and four rapporteur reports, as well as a summary that concludes with the main findings of the symposium. Text versions of 19 poster presentations are provided on the attached CD-ROM."--Publisher's description.
