Book National Needs in Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards

Download or read book National Needs in Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards written by Katy Nardi and published by . This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report identifies 25 Measurement Program Descriptions (MPDs) that require concerted efforts from industry, government and the academic community. Each MPD describes a measurement-related need, a possible solution, and the impact of that solution. Details are provided regarding the technical nature of the solution, relationship to existing programs, technical opportunities, challenges and goals. Resources available and those needed to accomplish the programs are also indicated. Each subcommittee has identified one MPD for which a roadmap is considered essential to meet national goals.

Book Adopting the International System of Units for Radiation Measurements in the United States

Download or read book Adopting the International System of Units for Radiation Measurements in the United States written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most countries in the world use the SI (Système International, also known as the metric system) units for radiation measurements in commercial and technical activities. The United States, in contrast, uses a mix of SI and conventional units for radiation measurements, despite 30-year-old national and international recommendations to exclusively use SI. Radiation professionals in the United States are faced with the need to understand both systems and make conversions between the two. In September 2016, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a workshop to explore potential communication improvements associated with adopting the international system of units (SI units) for radiation measurements in the United States. Participants discussed potential improvements in the effectiveness of responding to national and international radiation emergencies, international experiences in adopting the exclusive use of SI units of radiation measurements, and steps needed to adopt the exclusive use of SI units in the US in terms of timing, implementation, and ways to overcome or manage technical, economic, and policy barriers. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Environmental Radiation Measurements

Download or read book Environmental Radiation Measurements written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by Ncrp. This book was released on 1976 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent years, the need for accurate, reliable and interpretable measurements of environmental radiation and radioactivity has increased steadily. Such requirements as the assessment of exposure to man from natural and manmade sources, the evaluation of compliance with governmental regulations, knowledge of the movement and retention of manmade radionuclides due to man's use of such materials, and the investigation of geological processes and atmospheric phenomena have all contributed to this need. This report presents a unified and systematic consideration of environmental radiation measurements, especially with respect to the identification and characterization of smalll radiation fields and small concentrations of specific radionuclides, and the even smaller variations or changes in them. The role of measurements in the realistic assessment of dose to man through critical pathways is emphasized, serving as an introduction to the detailed discussions on sampling and sample analysis for radioactivity. Finally, the future needs and uses of environmental measurements, of new instrumentation, and of improved interpretations of the results are presented." --From Preface, page iii.
