Book Environmental Infrastructure in African History

Download or read book Environmental Infrastructure in African History written by Emmanuel Kreike and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Infrastructure in African History offers a new approach for analyzing and narrating environmental change. Environmental change conventionally is understood as occurring in a linear fashion, moving from a state of more nature to a state of less nature and more culture. In this model, non-Western and premodern societies live off natural resources, whereas more modern societies rely on artifact, or nature that is transformed and domesticated through science and technology into culture. In contrast, Emmanuel Kreike argues that both non-Western and premodern societies inhabit a dynamic middle ground between nature and culture. He asserts that humans- in collaboration with plants, animals, and other animate and inanimate forces - create environmental infrastructure that constantly is remade and reimagined in the face of ongoing processes of change.

Book excerpt: Adventure fiction is one of the easiest narrative forms to recognize but one of the hardest to define because of its overlap with many other genres. This collection of essays attempts to characterize adventure fiction through the exploration of key elements--such as larger-than-life characters and imperialistic ideas--in the genre's 19th- and 20th-century British and American works like The Scarlet Pimpernel by Orczy and Captain Blood by Sabatini. The author explores the cultural and literary impact of such works, presenting forgotten classics in a new light.

Book A Journey of Remembering

Download or read book A Journey of Remembering written by Nathan Whiting and published by Summerland Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of the author's self-induced journey into and through hell on his way to finding and remembering a way "home" while stumbling upon the ultimate love which is unconditional in form. While preparing for this journey of remembering, he found himself conscious enough at times to realize and save the "gold nuggets" of spirituality he stumbled upon, hoping one day to share these with others. While the gold nuggets are spiritual in nature, it's a raw variety or a "street spirituality." Being a non-conformist and rebel at heart, he had to find some type of spirituality that would work for him and get him back on the path of remembering what he is here for in the human form. This is a brutally honest (and sometimes graphic) retelling of that journey of recovery.

Book Strategies for Achieving Food Security in Central Asia

Download or read book Strategies for Achieving Food Security in Central Asia written by Hami Alpas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food Security is a primary concern for all countries. However the vulnerabilities which need addressing are dictated by the individual country according to the food control systems in place, the nature of the food industry and the culture of the country. This book summarises the presentations of a NATO Advanced Training Course addressing the issue of food security in Central Asia. The book is divided into two sections. The first provides an overview of the existing aspects of food security in participating Central Asian countries. The emphasis here is on food safety, control and access and includes background information on the relevant food industries. Participating countries include the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The second section explores particular aspects of food security in participating NATO countries. These provide some insight into the value, strengths and weaknesses of common food security systems. Chapters cover HACCP, ISO/IEC 17025 standards and associated pre-requisite systems, allergies and food intolerances, risk perception and communication, training, and ethics. A chapter on food defence in the USA is also included. This book is suitable for anyone with an interest in food control systems and food security.
