Book Spies and Shuttles

Download or read book Spies and Shuttles written by James E. David and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this real life spy saga, James E. David reveals the extensive and largely hidden interactions between NASA and U.S. defense and intelligence departments. The story begins with the establishment of NASA in 1958 and follows the agency through its growth, not only in scope but also in complexity. In Spies and Shuttles, David digs through newly declassified documents to ultimately reveal how NASA became a strange bedfellow to the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He tracks NASA’s early cooperation—supplying cover stories for covert missions, analyzing the Soviet space program, providing weather and other scientific data from its satellites, and monitoring missile tests—that eventually devolved into NASA’s reliance on DoD for political and financial support for the Shuttle. David also examines the restrictions imposed on such activities as photographing the Earth from space and the intrusive review mechanisms to ensure compliance. The ties between NASA and the intelligence community have historically remained unexplored, and David’s riveting book is the first to investigate the twists and turns of this labyrinthine relationship.

Book Implications of Joint NASA DOD Participation in Space Shuttle Operations

Download or read book Implications of Joint NASA DOD Participation in Space Shuttle Operations written by GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE WASHINGTON DC NATIONAL SECURITY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Space shuttle's emergence as the single launch system for all U.S. Spacecraft, civilian and military, has required increased NASA participation in military space operations. Separate civilian and military space programs have been the topic of substantial debate within NASA, DOD, and the Congress in recent years. The debate has focused on the economies of a joint NASA/DOD space program and the effect that joining the civilian and military space programs will have on the missions of each agency. Advocates of increased cooperation between NASA and DOD argue that this arrangement is economical and efficient. Opponents object to mixing different agency missions and objectives. This report discusses issues related to joint NASA/DOD space activities and makes recommendations to address these issues. (Author).

Download or read book 50 Years of Solar System Exploration written by Linda Billings and published by National Aeronautics and Space Administration Office of Communications NASA History Division. This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first successful planetary mission, Mariner 2 sent to Venus in 1962, the NASA History Program Office, the Division of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, NASA's Science Mission Directorate, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory organized a symposium. "Solar System Exploration @ 50" was held in Washington, D.C., on 25-26 October 2012. The purpose of this symposium was to consider, over the more than 50-year history of the Space Age, what we have learned about the other bodies of the solar system and the processes by which we have learned it. Symposium organizers asked authors to address broad topics relating to the history of solar system exploration such as various flight projects, the development of space science disciplines, the relationship between robotic exploration and human spaceflight, the development of instruments and methodologies for scientific exploration, as well as the development of theories about planetary science, solar system origins and implications for other worlds. The papers in this volume provide a richly textured picture of important developments - and some colorful characters - in a half century of solar system exploration. A comprehensive history of the first 50 years of solar system exploration would fill many volumes. What readers will find in this volume is a collection of interesting stories about money, politics, human resources, commitment, competition and cooperation, and the "faster, better, cheaper" era of solar system exploration"--

Book Operations Management of DOD Space MIssions in the Shuttle Era

Download or read book Operations Management of DOD Space MIssions in the Shuttle Era written by Charles J. Tringali and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a history of the development of the Space Transportation System (STS) to date between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the executive agency acting for the Department of Defense, the United States Air Force. The STS consists of the NASA-developed space shuttle orbiter, the USAF-developed upper stage, the communications networks and launch base complexes of both agencies, and the satellite payloads developed by many user agencies to be placed in space. The program development is traced chronologically in terms of key joint-agency agreements, management interfaces, and compromises made as implementation of early proposals was accomplished. A proposal is made to develop a joint-agency STS operation authority responsive to national command/policy channels. (Author).
