Mo Jamshidi has spent his professional career formalizing and extending the field of large-scale complex systems (LSS) engineering resulting in educating numerous graduates specifically, ethnic minorities. He has made significant contributions in modeling, optimization, CAD, control and applications of large-scale systems leading to his current global role in formalizing system of systems engineering (SoSE), as a new field. His books on complex LSS and SoSE have filled a vacuum in cyber-physical systems literature for the 21st Century. His contributions to ethnic minority engineering education commenced with his work at the University of New Mexico (UNM, Tier-I Hispanic Serving Institution) in 1980 through a NASA JPL grant. Followed by several more major federal grants, he formalized a model for educating minorities, called VI-P Pyramid where K-12 students(bottom of pyramid) to doctoral (top of pyramid) students form a seamless group working on one project. Upper level students mentor lower ones on a sequential basis. Since 1980, he has graduated over 114 minority students consisting of 62 Hispanics, 34 African Americans., 15 Native Americans, and 3 Pacific Islanders. This book contains contributed chapters from colleagues, and former and current students of Professor Jamshidi. Areas of focus are: control systems, energy and system of systems, robotics and soft computing.

A second and perhaps an even more significant development is the great advances being made in genetics and related areas of biotechnology. Future developments in biotechnology may open the possibility for the development of a true human-silicon interaction at the micro level, neural and cellular, bringing about a need for "intelligent" systems. What is needed to further the development of intelligent systems are tools to enable the representation of human cognition in a manner that allows formal manipulation. The idea of developing such an algebra goes back to Leibniz in the 17th century with his dream of a calculus ratiocinator. It wasn't until two hundred years later beginning with the work of Boole, Cantor and Frege that a formal mathematical logic for modeling human reasoning was developed. The introduction of the modem digital computer during the Second World War by von Neumann and others was a culmination of this intellectual trend.

It shows how these techniques are used to control active devices that can reduce vibration 60–80% more effectively than widely used passive anti-seismic systems. After introducing various structural control devices and building-modeling and active structural control methods, the authors propose offset cancellation and high-pass filtering techniques to solve some common problems of building-displacement measurement using accelerometers. The most popular control algorithms in industrial settings, PD/PID controllers, are then analyzed and then combined with fuzzy compensation. The stability of this combination is proven with standard weight-training algorithms. These conditions provide explicit methods for selecting PD/PID controllers. Finally, fuzzy-logic and sliding-mode control are applied to the control of wind-induced vibration. The methods described are supported by reports of experimental studies on a two-story building prototype. This book is a valuable resource for academic researchers interested in the effects of control and mechatronic devices within buildings, or those studying the principles of vibration reduction.
