Book excerpt: A SELF-HELP BOOK AND FEMINIST MANIFESTO ALL IN ONE - AWAKENING IS A CALL FOR ACTION AND GENDER EQUITY IN A POST-COVID WORLD. Awakening goes beyond the idea that women should ask for a seat at the table. Areva Martin makes the case for women to tear down the building, build anew, and choose tables that make room for everyone. Martin does this by exposing five lies told by society that have kept women held back for so long. By further exploring the problem and offering solutions that benefit all people, Awakening gives women in all careers a path toward a more equitable world. Pick up Awakening for your next book club, to gift to a new grad, or to show a woman in your life that you support their journey. Uncover the lies we have been told and discover how we can move toward a more equitable world. Areva Martin provides statistics and stories on how our current system works to keep women as the inferior sex and why it needs a complete overhaul. Case studies from real women at work demonstrate the barriers that hold women back and the conflicts that they face if they choose to start a family. Readers will explore “how we got here” and the movements, milestones, and men who have shaped where women stand in the workplace today. Martin zooms out to describe how expectations, norms, and culture need to change before equity can be achieved. Action items throughout the book offer small and quick exercises that become stepping stones to larger solutions. The past decade has been a whirlwind of fighting for equity, seeing the consequences of small-scale strategies, and being pushed back by the COVID-19 pandemic. Areva Martin lays all of this out on the table and provides a map for pushing forward in the corporate jungle, nonprofit world, and society at large. Grab your copy of Awakening today to expose the lies told by society and become leaders at work and home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Morrigan - Celtic Goddess of War, Fate and Death. I am a warrior of the Tuatha de Danann. History writes us as a supernatural race in Irish mythology that battled demons and the Fomorians - a race similar to ours and our rivals. The last thing I remember, I fought alongside King Arthur against the Fomoire and an evil God. Then... I remember nothing. I am Morrigan, but I am no Goddess and no myth. The world has spun on for centuries without me and my people. The only traces of us existing are in the legends we've left behind. There are mysteriously few demons and new creatures I've never encountered, vampires and werewolves, that roam the world. The Gods are back to playing their twisted games for power, threatening to end the entire realm. There is little hope until - we are awakened.

Book Partially Awakened Giants

Download or read book Partially Awakened Giants written by Shubham Chaudhuri and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The paper examines the ways in which recent economic growth has been uneven in China and India and what this has meant for inequality and poverty. Drawing on analyses based on existing household survey data and aggregate data from official sources, the authors show that growth has indeed been uneven-geographically, sectorally, and at the household level-and that this has meant uneven progress against poverty, less poverty reduction than might have been achieved had growth been more balanced, and an increase in income inequality. The paper then examines why growth was uneven and why this should be of concern. The discussion is structured around the idea that there are both "good" and "bad" inequalities-drivers and dimensions of inequality and uneven growth that are good or bad in terms of what they imply for both equity and long-term growth and development. The authors argue that the development paths of both China and India have been influenced by, and have generated, both types of inequalities and that while good inequalities-most notably those that reflect the role of economic incentives-have been critical to the growth experience thus far, there is a risk that bad inequalities-those that prevent individuals from connecting to markets and limit investment and accumulation of human capital and physical capital-may undermine the sustainability of growth in the coming years. The authors argue that policies are needed that preserve the good inequalities-continued incentives for innovation and investment-but reduce the scope for bad ones, notably through investments in human capital and rural infrastructure that help the poor connect to markets.

Download or read book The Awakened Ones written by Gananath Obeyesekere and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a rational consciousness grasps many truths, Gananath Obeyesekere believes an even richer knowledge is possible through a bold confrontation with the stuff of visions and dreams. Spanning both Buddhist and European forms of visionary experience, he fearlessly pursues the symbolic, nonrational depths of such phenomena, reawakening the intuitive, creative impulses that power greater understanding. Throughout his career, Obeyesekere has combined psychoanalysis and anthropology to illuminate the relationship between personal symbolism and religious experience. In this book, he begins with Buddha's visionary trances wherein, over the course of four hours, he witnesses hundreds of thousands of his past births and eons of world evolution, renewal, and disappearance. He then connects this fracturing of empirical and visionary time to the realm of space, considering the experience of a female Christian penitent, who stares devotedly at a tiny crucifix only to see the space around it expand to mirror Christ's suffering. Obeyesekere follows the unconscious motivations underlying rapture, the fantastical consumption of Christ's body and blood, and body mutilation and levitation, bridging medieval Catholicism and the movements of early modern thought as reflected in William Blake's artistic visions and poetic dreams. He develops the term "dream-ego" through a discussion of visionary journeys, Carl Jung's and Sigmund Freud's scientific dreaming, and the cosmic and erotic dream-visions of New Age virtuosos, and he defines the parameters of a visionary mode of knowledge that provides a more elastic understanding of truth. A career-culminating work, this volume translates the epistemology of Hindu and Buddhist thinkers for western audiences while revitalizing western philosophical and scientific inquiry.

Book excerpt: The Awakening presents a profound yet simple message: how to awaken from emotional imprisonment and find psychological freedom. Many of us feel we are not living life to the full or living it as we should. Haunted by anxiety, we long for lifelines that can lift us out of the mundane into what Seamus Heaney called 'the marvellous'. If you feel like this, then The Awakening may be for you.Drawing on the wisdom of ancient Ireland and using the symbol of the Celtic Cross as an image for how to live, Dr O'Connor shows us that we inhabit both a vertical and a horizontal life, which intersect where the eternal breaks into the everyday and ordinary activities are infused with an extraordinary purpose.Taking you beyond mindfulness and introducing delightful new concepts like 'Mind-Flight', this book uncovers the sparkling jewels buried in the rubble of life's indifference. You can turn a tiny space into a palace, a misfortune into an opportunity, a disability into a blessing and fly when life expects you to fall. The Awakening, like the first light at Newgrange, will illuminate the hidden blessings in what may seem to be your darkened life.

Book excerpt: This fascinating multivolume set provides a unique resource for learning about early American history, including thematic essays, topical entries, and an invaluable collection of primary source documents. In 1783, just months after the United States achieved independence from Great Britain, General George Washington was compelled to convince his officers not to undertake a military coup of the Congress of Confederation. Had the planned mutinous coup of the Newburgh Conspiracy gone forward, the American experiment may have ended before it even began. The pre-colonial and colonial periods of early American history are filled with accounts of key events that established the course of our nation's development. This expansive three-volume set provides entries on a wide variety of topics and themes in early American history to elucidate how the United States came to be. Written in straightforward language, the encyclopedic entries on social, political, cultural, and military subjects from the pre-Columbian period through the creation of the Constitution (roughly 1400–1790) will be useful for anyone wishing to deeply investigate the who, what, where, when, and why of early America. Additionally, the breadth of primary documents—including personal diaries, letters, poems, images, treaties, and other legal documents—provides readers with firsthand sources written by the men and women who shaped American history, both the famous and the less well known. Each of the three volumes also presents thematic essays on highlighted topics to fully place the individual entries within their proper historical context and heighten readers' comprehension.
