Book excerpt: Mark Anthony Jarman is one of Canada’s most original and compelling writers of short fiction. My White Planet is his latest collection of fourteen new stories, many of which have previously won or been short-listed for literary magazine awards. Jarman’s use of language and metaphor is unique in the Canadian literary pantheon. With extraordinary linguistic energy, he pushes the boundaries of fiction and story-telling. Every sentence reverberates with subtle meaning and every reading of a Jarman story brings out ever deeper layers of complexity and nuance. Here is a protean writer who bends form and enters into worlds and people with panache and a verve that is breath-taking. The range of his fiction is stunning: troops undertake a nightmarish march following Custer’s last stand; a father’s dogs tear apart his son and he is accused of cowardice and neglect; seven marooned men at a remote polar station save the life of a naked young woman; domestic squabbles and infidelity abound amidst west coast chainsaws and floatplanes; a dropout skateboarder falls off a railway bridge and drowns in the river; a city bus ride ends up crossing the entire country; a time traveler witnesses Louis Riel’s botched execution of Thomas Scott; a young woman removes her bra from under her shirt and her male friend is paralysed by possible meanings; an outsider plays old timer hockey in the wilds of New Brunswick; Victorian fashion is mixed up with the violent deaths of Custer, Louis Riel and Sitting Bull; a flight attendant is able to read passengers’ minds. A master of literary conceit and a hewer of breakneck language, Mark Anthony Jarman defies categorization and offers us instead a narrative freshness that surprises and offers up a world of wonders.

His real baptism, however, began in the early nineties when Alaska emerged as the ski world’s Next Big Thing. Steep faces and vast tracks of powder snow, were captured on film and beamed to audiences around the world. The result was a freeskiing revolution. With insight and humor, White Planet, traces an arc through the new ski culture, in a rock ‘n’ roll adventure that follows a diaspora to far-flung corners of the globe. Book excerpt: A gripping journey through the icy regions of our changing planet From the Arctic Ocean and ice sheets of Greenland, to the glaciers of the Andes and Himalayas, to the great frozen desert of Antarctica, The White Planet takes readers on a spellbinding scientific journey through the shrinking world of ice and snow to tell the story of the expeditions and discoveries that have transformed our understanding of global climate. This is an essential book for anyone who wants to understand the inextricable link between climate and our planet's icy regions.

Book White Planet Black Heart

Download or read book White Planet Black Heart written by Torbjørn Rødland and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2006 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torbjorn Rodland is to photography what the Pet Shop Boys are to pop: a master of the delicately orchestrated cliche overload, a surcharge of the too obvious, too cute or too inane, played to the point where, drained of all trace of common sense, it suggests a new sense of silence, of mystery. Rodland has a knack for producing images that make you ask what are, in fact, appropriate motives for art photography: Images of single audio or video cassettes? Bleak black-and-white renditions of countryside churches? George W. Bush's favorite ice cream? A black banana? Girls and pets, pets and girls? He creates a complex of readings that inveigles the viewer into spending time with each single image, to reconsider its meaning and relevance. White Planet, Black Heart makes no excuses as it reinvents the romantic impulses of popular culture. This is Rodland's first book.

Book Welcome to Your Designer Planet

Download or read book Welcome to Your Designer Planet written by Richard Leviton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We now live in the time of the Gaian hierophant. This is the one who reveals and shows us how to relate to the sacred aspects of Gaia, our planet. Who is this hierophant? Each of us, when we join the campaign with Gaia against the desecration of our natural environment. But first we have to discover what the Earth really is. The Earth's thousands of sacred sites hold a secret: they are functional parts of the planet's geomantic body, consciousness nodes in the Earth's subtle body. Each veils a Light temple, each once known widely and remembered in myth, and Welcome to Your Designer Planet! documents 165 different kinds. The Earth is not an accident of the cosmos, but was designed specifically for humans as an extended Mystery temple primed to support and enhance our greater awareness. And the designers intended that humans help maintain it. Want to help the ecosystem and modulate global warming and climate change? Plug yourself into the Earth's Light grid through your nearest sacred site and start helping. Earth Mysteries researcher Richard Leviton presents a working model of the Earth's geomantic reality based on 24 years of research. The world's myths are the doorway into this fantastic domain of the Earth's visionary geography, showing us where to go and what to do and even what kinds of spiritual beings to expect to see. The future of the Earth is in our hands. Here are some pages from its design manual showing us how to fine-tune our wonderful host planet.

Book How to Find a Habitable Planet

Download or read book How to Find a Habitable Planet written by James F. Kasting and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amazing science behind the search for Earth-like planets Ever since Carl Sagan first predicted that extraterrestrial civilizations must number in the millions, the search for life on other planets has gripped our imagination. Is Earth so rare that advanced life forms like us—or even the simplest biological organisms—are unique to the universe? How to Find a Habitable Planet describes how scientists are testing Sagan's prediction, and demonstrates why Earth may not be so rare after all. James Kasting has worked closely with NASA in its mission to detect habitable worlds outside our solar system, and in this book he introduces readers to the advanced methodologies being used in this extraordinary quest. He addresses the compelling questions that planetary scientists grapple with today: What exactly makes a planet habitable? What are the signatures of life astronomers should look for when they scan the heavens for habitable worlds? In providing answers, Kasting explains why Earth has remained habitable despite a substantial rise in solar luminosity over time, and why our neighbors, Venus and Mars, haven't. If other Earth-sized planets endowed with enough water and carbon are out there, he argues, chances are good that some of those planets sustain life. Kasting describes the efforts under way to find them, and predicts that future discoveries will profoundly alter our view of the universe and our place in it. This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever dreamed of finding other planets like ours—and perhaps even life like ours—in the cosmos. In a new afterword, Kasting presents some recent breakthroughs in the search for exoplanets and discusses the challenges facing space programs in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I approached the Golden Egg and I was about 5 feet from the egg I was told to stop, and stand still. Looking around me I was surprised to see, all the other Dragons had made a circle around me, at a distance of about 30 feet away from where I stood. I looked at the Golden Egg that was in soft warm sand, in front of me. Then I could see that it was gently rocking from side to side, and then I noted that tiny cracks appeared, they gradually got bigger as the Golden Egg continued to rock. I heard a tapping sound coming from the Golden Egg, there was no other sound in the warm still air, I could hear my heart beating in my breast, I thought that it sounded quite loud to me and I hope that I was the only one who could hear my heart beating. I then realized that my heart beat and the tapping sound that came from the Golden egg were the same rhythm. With breathless anticipation I watched the Golden Eggs cracks become a small hole at first, and then much bigger, soon a tiny Golden Dragon was nearly fully exposed. With one final push a Beautiful Golden Little Dragon cast her eyes on me. She looked intently at me for what seemed to be a life time, but it was really only one minute, she took her first step then the second towards me on wobbly legs. Step by shaky unsteady step this little baby dragon came to me, when she was close to me she lifted her Golden head and glared at me intently, with her big brown eyes. Pleading for me to accept her, and to pat her on her Golden Head. I looked at her and my heart melted; I knew that I would love her and protect her until my life ended. I stroked her head very gently then I held her close to me in a gentle hug as a mother would her new born child.
