Book excerpt: Life sucks, then you find Barcaldine. This is an unlikely love story where a city boy heads west and falls madly in love with outback Barcaldine, western Queensland. In Barcaldine, family is everything. The matriarch of the family is Grandma Elizabeth Mary Sleeman, who, with her sisters Louisa Jane and Amelia Ann, rule the family roost. A skeleton in the closet emerges which, if revealed, would shock people to the core. City boy Kerry, with ‘Chunda’ Urquhart as his new mate, are soon inseparable, pushing boundaries and getting into strife. So, adjust your bicycle seats and come riding with the Barcy boys as they swim and fish in the nearby Alice River, or seek treasure at the local dump, building and defending their fort from other Barcy gangs, with shangeyes as their weapons of choice. On busy weekends, attend pony club riding rogue, adrenalin-high stock horses, or go ‘roo and pig shooting as a form of family bonding. Meet up at George’s Greek cafe for a milkshake and plan their next misadventure, or take in a movie in canvas seats, where boiled lollies are sucked and young love blossoms. However, don’t be caught in Beverley’s torch of shame. Enjoy the trip down memory lane, where no one is defriended.

Book excerpt: Upon the death of his beloved Uncle Calvin, a young Jonah Padgett makes his way to Sag Harbor with nothing but a letter of introduction and a strange amulet shaped like a dolphin. He signs on to the whaler Absalom, under the command of his uncle's old friend, Captain Solomon. Upon rounding the Horn, the crew hears stories of a sperm whale said to be as big as a mountain with skin as black as a bible, and in command of a harem of a hundred females. Captain Solomon wagers that his crew will be the one to make its fortune hunting down the elusive "King Jim". But when the Absalom signs on the native called Koro as a harpooner, the ship is beleaguered by inexplicable disappearances and horrific death, which pits shipmate against shipmate. While trying to clear his friend of suspicion, Jonah finds himself adrift in a fantastical world filled with dolphin-like merfolk and nightmarish were-sharks, endangered equally by inhuman creatures from the ocean’s depths and human fear and superstition, his very life at the mercy of something as old and mysterious as the sea itself.

Book excerpt: Captain Jerry took the proffered match and lit the two bracket lamps, fastened to the walls of the dining room. The room, seen by the lamplight, was shiplike, but as decidedly not shipshape. The chronometer on the mantel was obscured by a thick layer of dust. The three gorgeous oil paintings—from the brush of the local sign painter—respectively representing the coasting packet Hannah M., Eri Hedge, Master, and the fishing schooners, Georgie Baker, Jeremiah Burgess, Master, and the Flying Duck, Perez Ryder, Master, were shrouded in a very realistic fog of the same dust. Even the imposing gilt-lettered set of "Lives of Great Naval Commanders," purchased by Captain Perez some months before, and being slowly paid for on an apparently never-ending installment plan, was cloaked with it. The heap of newspapers, shoved under the couch to get them out of the way, peeped forth in a tell-tale manner. The windows were not too clean and the floor needed sweeping. Incidentally the supper table had not been cleared. Each one of the three noted these things and each sighed.
