Book excerpt: Finding it harder and harder to keep track of your online passwords? Seem like every site you visit wants you to register and create an account along with a username and password? And, then they want you create a brand new password every 90, 120, or 150 days? Do you have your important passwords written on small pieces of paper and stuffed in your wallet, purse, or desk drawer? Do you have post-it sticky notes stuck to your computer screen with usernames and passwords jotted down? As the Internet gets more and more complicated, and more and more bad guys are out there trying to hack into your computer, you must remain vigilant and keep making stronger and stronger passwords. No longer can you use admin and 12345 as your username and password. You need a strong password and you should change any default username (like admin) You must have a complex, strong password to avoid brute force attacks. Bruce Schneier said this in 2005 - "Simply, people can no longer remember passwords good enough to reliably defend against dictionary attacks, and are much more secure if they choose a password too complicated to remember and then write it down. We're all good at securing small pieces of paper. I recommend that people write their passwords down on a small piece of paper, and keep it with their other valuable small pieces of paper: in their wallet." Fourteen years have passed and we have too many passwords for our wallets. We need to write them down lest we forget them, but not on little pieces of paper. We need to write them down in the Password Tracker. This 6X9 inch, 120 page Password Tracker book is the perfect size for desk drawer at home, your pocket or purse, or your gym bag or backpack. Just don't lose it! Strong passwords contain a mix of lower and upper case letters, numbers and special characters. Ffd@tF6JXT9$n@QNB5Y and Kk7(rmV8&TX3CwuRt&^ are examples of strong passwords but are very difficultu to memorize and remember. Your web browser may or may not save passwords for you but what happens when your computer crashes or your browser update deletes all your stored passwords? Write your usernames and passwords in the Password Tracker, keep it secure, and update your strong passwords regularly.

Book Home Networking Annoyances

Download or read book Home Networking Annoyances written by Kathy Ivens and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2005-01-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beauty of a home network is that it can make life so easy--what could be better than sharing an Internet connection so that everyone can be online at the same time? With home networking you can move files from one computer to another, share resources, print to a single printer or multiple printers from any computer in the house, and IM the kids when they're holed up in their rooms. And the downside? Anyone who's ever had to troubleshoot a network glitch doesn't need to ask that question. The simple words, "Why can't I print? Why can't I get to the Internet? Why does my computer say 'Access Denied' today, when it worked fine yesterday?" are enough to send the home network administrator running for cover. And the concept of "network security" can keep the soundest sleeper tossing and turning all night.Currently, more than 8 million homes in the US have installed a network of some kind, and within five years, that number is expected to jump to 37 million. This speaks to the availability of easy-to-install home networking products. Unfortunately, there's also a glut of potential headaches that can occur after installation (and during, sometimes) with no warning label on the box saying, "This product sure to cause annoyances."But help is here. Home Networking Annoyances will ease the headaches and annoyances of anyone who runs a home network. This book tackles all the common annoyances associated with running your network--whether it's wired or wireless, or a combination thereof. Its friendly, off-the-cuff approach will put you in a position of power over those home networking glitches, including file sharing, printing, cabling, security, and much more. You'll find dozens of on-target tips, workarounds, and fixes that will help you improve your home networking experience in every way possible.Whether you're a mainstream business user or a home user with newly installed network hardware, you've probably had your patience tested by frustrating network maintenance issues. Take a stand against annoyances now: just as the bestselling PC Annoyances brought peace and happiness to PC users everywhere, Home Networking Annoyances is your ticket to serenity.

Book excerpt: I’m Charlie Davies, and I’m bored. Not only have I not worked a case in months, but now that I’m on holidays my roomies are dragging me along to a self improvement class to get ready for the new year. Early mornings, yoga, health food… Basically a total nightmare. Plus my, uh, ‘friend’ Adam has been away from town for six months without sending so much as a text message my way, and I’m beginning to wonder why he’s so studiously avoiding me. When a man is found dead at the yoga studio during my personal growth class, I’m thrilled. Finally! A dead body! A dream come true! Teaming up with my buddy Eli, I set about finding the culprit, although it would be a lot easier if my cop boyfriend would help. Unfortunately he doesn’t seem so keen on me chasing after yet another murderer. And when Adam returns to town, things start to get a little… complicated. I might have trouble sticking to some of my resolutions this year.
