Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION My Mindd Eye, fantasy is McCoys first book of short stories with adult content. She specifies that this book is not for kids but for adults; of the age of consent who dont want something to learn, but as an escape from reality for a short period of time. In that light it is secondly dedicated to: her friends and acquaintances in Fantasy Role-play for their ideas and laughter at her muse; for taking the time to read a story or two of hers in helping her to decide to complete the book. Thank You my friends for your time, trouble and thoughts on my writing. I can only hope I have done all of you proud. "Aye lad, The Sea has been my mistress some 40 years now. Stories? Yes, there are stories to be told pull up a chair and Ill tell them to you."

This collection represents a multitude of cultural experiences rooted in everyday, routine life at home in her native Cameroon and abroad. The poems in the first part of Visions in My Minds Eye are all academic in nature, each dedicated to students she has taught at Bowie State University. These poems illuminate varying themes and subjects ranging from the notion of knowledge to responsibility. In the second part of the collection, the poems are religious. While a number of them are written in memory of Irmagards late father Dr. Ngongwikuo, she also explores visual images of her life in Cameroon in a startling, meditative, and dreamlike state of mind. In the third part of the collection, she has written love poems drawn mostly from her imaginary world of romantic bliss. The fourth section of the collection includes secular poems covering a variety of themes based on the daily rhythm of our lives. The fifth and final part of Visions in My Minds Eye takes a critical look at basic human nature, morality, and the human condition during times of political upheaval. Visions in My Minds Eye portrays vivid images that capture the imagination and unravel an intriguing world that leaves the mind soul-searching for answers.

Book In My Mind s Eye A Thought Diary

Download or read book In My Mind s Eye A Thought Diary written by Jan Morris and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riffing on cats and Brexit, the Royals and the annoyances of aging, the nonagenarian Jan Morris delights with her wickedly hilarious first-ever diary collection. Celebrated as the “greatest descriptive writer of her time” (Rebecca West), Jan Morris has been dazzling readers since she burst on the scene with her on-the-spot reportage of the first ascent of Everest in 1953. Now, the beloved ninety-two-year-old, author of classics such as Venice and Trieste, embarks on an entirely new literary enterprise—a collection of daily diaries, penned over the course of a single year. Ranging widely from the idyllic confines of her North Wales home, Morris offers diverse sallies on her preferred form of exercises (walking briskly), her frustration at not recognizing a certain melody humming in her head (Beethoven’s Pathétique, incidentally), her nostalgia for small-town America, as well as intimate glimpses into her home life. With insightful quips on world issues, including Britain’s “special relationship” with the United States and the #MeToo movement, In My Mind’s Eye will charm old and new Jan Morris fans alike.

Shirley Ann Christian Kyles’ experiences and struggles that she has endured as a human being relates to all of humanity. We all live with adversity, inequality, and oppression, in one form or another. The poetry in this collection is based on Christian Kyles’ thoughts, emotions, and innermost feelings, as seen through the eyes of a black woman born and raised in the south and having experienced first-hand, picking cotton from sun up to sundown, knowing the fear of being chased from her home in the middle of the night running from the Ku Klux Klan, to marching in the streets for justice out west in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  • Author : Ian Robertson
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2007-04-01
  • ISBN : 1429979828

Download or read book Opening the Mind s Eye written by Ian Robertson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Robertson has always been fascinated by how the mind makes images, for that awesome power directly and deeply affects our lives. All of us "visualize" the world differently, and how we do so dictates the way we feel, remember, and think--and therefore our health, memory, and creativity. In this lively, accessible and fascinating book, Robertson explains that most of us employ language as a basis for visualization. In effect, we think in words more than in images. The result is an imbalance between the logical and the intuitive, between imagery-based thought and language-based thought. Opening the Mind's Eye is both an enlightening and stimulating explanation of how we "see," and a compelling argument for extending the mind's powers to improve the quality of our lives. Like Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence, it combines insight and application.

Book The Mind s Eye

    Book Details:
  • Author : Oliver Sacks
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2010-10-26
  • ISBN : 0307594556
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book The Mind s Eye written by Oliver Sacks and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mind’s Eye, Oliver Sacks tells the stories of people who are able to navigate the world and communicate with others despite losing what many of us consider indispensable senses and abilities: the power of speech, the capacity to recognize faces, the sense of three-dimensional space, the ability to read, the sense of sight. For all of these people, the challenge is to adapt to a radically new way of being in the world. There is Lilian, a concert pianist who becomes unable to read music and is eventually unable even to recognize everyday objects, and Sue, a neurobiologist who has never seen in three dimensions, until she suddenly acquires stereoscopic vision in her fifties. There is Pat, who reinvents herself as a loving grandmother and active member of her community, despite the fact that she has aphasia and cannot utter a sentence, and Howard, a prolific novelist who must find a way to continue his life as a writer even after a stroke destroys his ability to read. And there is Dr. Sacks himself, who tells the story of his own eye cancer and the bizarre and disconcerting effects of losing vision to one side. Sacks explores some very strange paradoxes—people who can see perfectly well but cannot recognize their own children, and blind people who become hyper-visual or who navigate by “tongue vision.” He also considers more fundamental questions: How do we see? How do we think? How important is internal imagery—or vision, for that matter? Why is it that, although writing is only five thousand years old, humans have a universal, seemingly innate, potential for reading? The Mind’s Eye is a testament to the complexity of vision and the brain and to the power of creativity and adaptation. And it provides a whole new perspective on the power of language and communication, as we try to imagine what it is to see with another person’s eyes, or another person’s mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Autobiographical Illustrations began as a hedge against loss. We live in a fire zone in the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California. Every Fall when the dry Santana winds blow there is high danger that a fierce fire storm will blow through, incinerating everything in its path. I know people who have experienced a fire and lost everything. They have rebuilt, sometimes better than before, and have moved on. But they have lost all those precious objects that we place so much value on. The objects may have no monetary value, yet they are invaluable as personal mementos of the important relationships and events which they represent. I have such objects, saved over the years in odd corners and shelves. When I see these objects I see much more. My mind's eye holds images of events, places and people associated with these objects. They are links to my past. They help me know who I am, how I got here, and what I should be doing now. Thinking of this and the yearly fire danger that could take them all away in five minutes, I realized that it is the memories they hold that are important to me. I decided to focus on these objects, draw them in detail, imbed them in my memory, and then surround them with the images I associate with them. In this way I could place them more firmly in my heart and mind...and also in a very portable portfolio which I could hopefully grab as I escaped the oncoming blaze.
