Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of Bird by Bird comes a personal, wise, very funny, and “life-affirming” book (People) that shows us how to find meaning and hope through shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life. "Anne Lamott is walking proof that a person can be both reverent and irreverent in the same lifetime. Sometimes even in the same breath." —San Francisco Chronicle Lamott claims the two best prayers she knows are: "Help me, help me, help me" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you." She has a friend whose morning prayer each day is "Whatever," and whose evening prayer is "Oh, well." Anne thinks of Jesus as "Casper the friendly savior" and describes God as "one crafty mother." Despite—or because of—her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. The people in Anne Lamott's real life are like beloved characters in a favorite series for her readers—her friend Pammy, her son, Sam, and the many funny and wise folks who attend her church are all familiar. And Traveling Mercies is a welcome return to those lives, as well as an introduction to new companions Lamott treats with the same candor, insight, and tenderness. Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers."

Book The Complete Works of Charles Spurgeon Volume 55

Download or read book The Complete Works of Charles Spurgeon Volume 55 written by Spurgeon, Charles H. and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 55 Sermons 3125-3177 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.

Download or read book Pierced Embraced written by Kelli Worrall and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you describe the love of God? Throughout the Gospel accounts, Jesus engaged women differently than He did men. Sometimes the difference is subtle. Sometimes it is stark. Always it is profound. Sometimes the love He offers them is gentle. Sometimes it is fierce. Always it is powerful. Sometimes that love feels like a warm embrace. Sometimes it’s more like a piercing jab. Always, it changes everything. Women today long to experience the same sort of life-changing love that Jesus lavished on His followers 2000 years ago. We still want to be completely seen and known and valued and set free—as painful as that process might sometimes be. Pierced and Embraced digs deeply into seven encounters that Jesus had with a wide variety of women in the Gospels to show how His love can be equally transformative in our lives today. It mixes attentive Scriptural engagement with personal narrative and relevant application, making the content fresh, accessible, engaging, and practical. You will: Understand the unique and powerful and complex ways in which Jesus loves the women of the gospels. Recognize your own longings for love and the (often inadequate) ways we seek to satisfy them. Discover how to live in the fullness of Jesus’ love for you. Includes study/reflection questions at the end of each chapter, inviting women to dig into the passages for themselves. Winner of the ECPA's Top Shelf Cover Award 2017

Book God s Grace for Every Family

Download or read book God s Grace for Every Family written by Anna Meade Harris and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving her own story together with nine attributes of God's character revealed from Scripture, Anna Meade Harris speaks to vulnerable single parents and to churches who want to love them well. After the death of her husband, Anna Meade Harris discovered that single-parent families don't seem to have a place in the local church. Because she and her kids no longer fit into the Christian family mold, the body of Christ felt alien and strange when Anna's family needed it the most. Belonging, even in the most loving church, was a challenge. God's Grace for Every Family was born out of Anna's desire to help other families avoid feeling the loneliness that hers felt. This gospel-centered work addresses the single parent who needs to know that God sees, loves, and cares for their family. The book also addresses the church at large, in the hopes that Christians will come to understand the unique needs of single-parent families and do a better job of welcoming, valuing, and loving them. The book begins with Anna's story and then presents information about single-parent families in America, providing an understanding of their unique needs and complex dynamics. The chapters that follow each focus on a particular area of need and contain: Exegesis of Scripture demonstrating the character of God in relationship with his people Short narratives collected through interviews with single parents from a variety of backgrounds Suggestions for how the church can serve God and families This book is written for all Christians, married or single, parent or childless. It's written for widows, divorcees, and those who never married. And it's written for the congregants, pastors, leaders, and church family who wants to embrace every family and learn how to serve them well. By addressing families and the church together, God's Grace for Every Family opens the door for gracious conversations and greater unity in the family of God.

Book The Heart of Evangelism

Download or read book The Heart of Evangelism written by Jerram Barrs and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2005-02-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Christians are called. Called to love God with all that we are. Called to serve Him. Called to reach out to the lost. However, if we are honest, the majority of us would admit that we find this last calling the most difficult. While we gladly support the evangelistic ministries of others, many of us feel discouraged by our own attempts at witnessing because our memorized approaches don't seem to work. This biblical study of evangelism gracefully reminds us that the New Testament model of witnessing is not a one-size-fits-all methodology. With compassion for the lost filling every page, Jerram Barrs shows the variety of approaches used in the New Testament-where the same uncompromised Gospel was packaged as differently as the audience-and calls you to follow its example. You can learn to witness comfortably in your particular circumstances so that sharing Christ doesn't feel like a chore. And as you watch God work in the lives of others and see the great blessings He brings, you'll discover what a privilege it is to live out the heart of evangelism: truly loving others to Christ.

Book excerpt: God intends everyone to be successful in life, according to His plan and destiny for each person. He wants our lives to shine with His love and glory. The Alternative Plan is my testimony. Even though I was a renegade, God restored me, after I had spent years running away from Him to pursue an independent life. The early influences that shaped my outlook on life were based on poverty, a fear of failure, and a need for affirmation, security, and love. As a backslider, I relied heavily on my intellect, rationale, and professional accolades to succeed. I spent years wearily pursuing an empty, meaningless lifestyle based on ambition, self-reliance, and self-focus. But the Lord, in His goodness and mercy, led me through many difficulties to a secure place of complete trust in His lordship. No matter how many mistakes you have made or how far you have walked away from the Lord, God has not changed His plans for you. God can still realign your life to fit the plan He intended for you. All age-groups and young immigrants can benefit from my story. Culture shock and the sometimes fast-paced, high-pressure business world can certainly present a challenge of faith to newcomers trying to find their way in a new country. This book is for those who feel trapped, those who feel like they have lost themselves, or were disappointed in their search for success, security, and stability. The optimum path to success is Jesus Christ. This book is a testimony of how God’s mercy and love powerfully pursued and fully restored me. If God can do this for me, He can do the same for you!
