Book Early Medieval China

  • Pages : 745 pages

Download or read book Early Medieval China written by Wendy Swartz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative sourcebook builds a dynamic understanding of China's early medieval period (220–589) through an original selection and arrangement of literary, historical, religious, and critical texts. A tumultuous and formative era, these centuries saw the longest stretch of political fragmentation in China's imperial history, resulting in new ethnic configurations, the rise of powerful clans, and a pervasive divide between north and south. Deploying thematic categories, the editors sketch the period in a novel way for students and, by featuring many texts translated into English for the first time, recast the era for specialists. Thematic topics include regional definitions and tensions, governing mechanisms and social reality, ideas of self and other, relations with the unseen world, everyday life, and cultural concepts. Within each section, the editors and translators introduce the selected texts and provide critical commentary on their historical significance, along with suggestions for further reading and research.

Book Entering China s Service

Download or read book Entering China s Service written by Katherine F. Bruner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Hart was one of those empire builders of the Victorian age who had a long and nearly uninterrupted experience in China, from 1854, when as a young Irishman from Belfast he landed in Ningpo, until 1908, when as a man in his seventies he finally retired to England. His years as the Ch'ing government's Inspector General of the Maritime Customs Service have been copiously recorded in letters to his London agent, beginning in 1868, published as a 2-volume collection, The IG. in Peking (Harvard, Belknap Press, 1975). In 1970, a second lode of Hart materials came to light, the 77 volumes of his journals, begun on the day of his arrival in China in 1854 and ending at his departure in 1908, with two short but significant gaps in the first decade where he himself destroyed entries of too personal a nature. Entering China's Service presents a complete and annotated transcript of the surviving journals through 1863, alternating with chapters devoted to Hart's North Ireland background, the China he encountered, the Ch'ing officials who trusted him, and the unfolding of his career. His reactions to the Chinese as well as to his fellow Westerners cast an invaluable light on nineteenth-century China.

Download or read book Chinese Buffet written by David Berwald and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the end, I passed quietly in the night, to the other side. Up the road a piece was a man at a desk asking for a full accounting. I told him it was "complicated", to which he replied, "well you better put it all down. Take your time and get it right, then we'll get back to you with a result." This journal is an attempt to answer that question by exploiting my love of writing to take stock of my life, recalling the experiences, accomplishments, failures, regrets, and lessons learned along the way. The stories it describes are sequential, interspersing the personal and professional aspects of my life, starting with my formative years, then describing the phases of my career into an active retirement. Its been a wild ride that successively transformed me from a generalist in applied physics and specialist in nuclear reactor design into a sort of Forrest Gump of advanced energy, aerospace and defense, and advanced system development. Over the years, I engaged in a Chinese Buffet of the big government-sponsored technology initiatives, but not lingering too long on any. Along the way, as we grew a family, then parted ways, my primary vocation became Systems Engineering, a relatively new discipline that addresses the orderly development of all sorts of complex systems. The book also includes "Tales from Russia - A Pawn and A King", which describes my activities there between 1985-1994. These were the most interesting and remarkable experiences of my career.

Far west of Beijing and Shanghai, in the remote Chinese province of Yunnan, pioneering artist Henrik Drescher settled over a decade ago. While residing in his adopted home, Drescher records his experiences and observations in his illustrated notebooks, capturing everyday life in settings ranging from street markets to mountainscapes. These richly illustrated pages are compiled here for the first time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's reform era is ending. Core factors that characterized it-political stability, ideological openness, and rapid economic growth-are unraveling. Since the 1990s, Beijing's leaders have firmly rejected any fundamental reform of their authoritarian one-party political system, and on the surface, their efforts have been a success. But as Carl Minzner shows, a closer look at China's reform era reveals a different truth. Over the past three decades, a frozen political system has fueled both the rise of entrenched interests within the Communist Party itself, and the systematic underdevelopment of institutions of governance among state and society at large. Economic cleavages have widened. Social unrest has worsened. Ideological polarization has deepened. Now, to address these looming problems, China's leaders are progressively cannibalizing institutional norms and practices that have formed the bedrock of the regime's stability in the reform era. End of an Era explains how China arrived at this dangerous turning point, and outlines the potential outcomes that could result.
