Book The Boyer Brothers of Baseball

Download or read book The Boyer Brothers of Baseball written by Lew Freedman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This the story of the seven baseball-playing Boyer brothers from western Missouri who signed professional contracts in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Led by oldest brother Cloyd, a pitcher, third baseman Ken and third baseman Clete, three of the seven brothers reached the majors. This book recounts their hardscrabble upbringing and how they fought their way to success. Initially discouraged by arm injuries that curtailed his big-league career, Cloyd became a coach and manager at the minor and major league levels, and remained in the game for nearly half a century. The most accomplished, Ken, became a perennial National League All-Star, and was the 1964 Most Valuable Player. In the 1960s, he was the face of the St. Louis Cardinals, and after his playing days ended he returned to manage the team. Clete gained prominence as a regular for the American League champion New York Yankees, and competed in five World Series before starring in the National League and concluding his career in Japan. While they did not make it to the top, the other four brothers enrich the story with their own baseball histories, and help illustrate how the closeness of the family helped each of them succeed.

Book My Brother s Voice

Download or read book My Brother s Voice written by Stephen Nasser and published by Stephens Press, LLC. This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Nasser somehow dug deep within his soul to survive the brutal and inhumane treatement his captors inflicted on the Jews. He was the only one of his family to survive--but the memory of his brother's dying words compelled him to live. Stephen's account of the Holocaust, told in the refreshingly direct and optimistic language of a young boy, appeals to both younger audiences and his contemporaries. Written in a straightforward, narrative style, Nasser avoids the cloying or maudlin language that characterizes some stories of the Holocaust. Perhaps it's for that reason readers will find his book one they won't forget--and one they recommend to others as a "must read."

Book Working Toward Racial Equity in First Year Composition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the authors’ attempts to interrogate the ways that white institutional, pedagogical, and curricular heteronormativity affects equity in writing instruction at Two Year Colleges. Written from a wide range of subject and identity positions, this volume explores issues that arise among students inside historically white-dominant classrooms, among faculty as curriculum and hiring decisions are made, and among colleagues when they attempt to engage the wider institution in equity work. Aiming to significantly change how urban Community College writing instruction is delivered in this country, the book operates on the principle that equity is essential to successful writing pedagogy, curricular development, and student success.

Book Dealing with Goliath

Download or read book Dealing with Goliath written by David B. Barton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Referred to as a hero in "one of the most incredible and exciting games in Utah prep history", I lived a ´Cinderella´ type story that emerged from the 1969 Utah State Championship game. Written up in the local paper as "the single, greatest and momentous play in Utah prep football", this game will live forever in the minds of all those who witnessed the spectacle. Inspired by the outcome of that monumental game, Bill Marcroft, a local sportscaster and the play-by-play voice of the University of Utah football program writes, "Several times during the past thirty years, I´ve told the story (of the 1969 State playoff game) on the air whenever a situation looked bleak for one team or another. You play until the final whistle, gun, or buzzer, because on that day long ago, I learned that ´It in´t over till it´s over´!" Many interesting and unique events transpired leading up to the action-packed state game that made this experience even more special. The even ´greater story´ behind this momentous event adds to the magnitude of what had transpired on that November day. Parallels between the ´game of football´ and the ´game of life´ may be the most important and valuable lessons learned from what many may view as ´just a game´. For anyone who has lost hope when life´s challenges made it seem hopeless, this story may inspire you to go on.

Book Brothers on Three

Download or read book Brothers on Three written by Abe Streep and published by Celadon Books. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2021 Montana Book Award** **Winner of the 2021 New Mexico-Arizona General Nonfiction Book Award** **Finalist for the Spur Award for Best Contemporary Nonfiction** **A New York Times Editors' Choice Pick** "A heart-stomping, heart-stopping read. Unsentimental. Unforgettable. Astonishing. Brothers on Three captures the roar of a community spirit powered by blood history, loyalty, and ferocious love." —Debra Magpie Earling, author of Perma Red From journalist Abe Streep, a story of coming-of-age on a reservation in the American West and a team uniting a community March 11, 2017, was a night to remember: in front of the hopeful eyes of thousands of friends, family members, and fans, the Arlee Warriors would finally bring the high school basketball state championship title home to the Flathead Indian Reservation. The game would become the stuff of legend, with the boys revered as local heroes. The team’s place in Montana history was now cemented, but for starters Will Mesteth, Jr. and Phillip Malatare, life would keep moving on—senior year was just beginning. In Brothers on Three, we follow Phil and Will, along with their teammates, coaches, and families, as they balance the pressures of adolescence, shoulder the dreams of their community, and chart their own individual courses for the future. Brothers on Three is not simply a story about high school basketball, state championships, and a winning team. It is a book about community, and it is about boys on the cusp of adulthood finding their way through the intersecting worlds they inhabit and forging their own paths to personhood.

The book starts out in early October 2001, when Dominic DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky begin a 1,300-mile trip by car to visit their beloved friend Ted Williams, whom they know is dying. Book Bash Brothers

Download or read book Bash Brothers written by Dale Tafoya and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco—the Bash Brothers—ushered in a new era of muscle-bound power hitters in baseball in the late 1980s. Suddenly balls were flying out of the parks like never before, and the rest of baseball stood up, took notice, and followed suit. Baseball’s bodybuilding revolution, with its resultant steroid infestation, was here to stay, and many experts today point to these two players as a large reason why. Author Dale Tafoya has interviewed more than 150 teammates, coaches, scouts, and friends who knew McGwire and Canseco during that era, including former A’s general manager Sandy Alderson, former team president Roy Eisenhardt, former commissioner Fay Vincent, Hall-of-Fame closer Dennis Eckersley, and 2004 Ford C. Frick award-winning legendary broadcaster Lon Simmons. They provide first-person commentary on what living and playing with the larger-than-life duo was like, and relate the shock and awe that followed both players and the team as well. Tafoya also investigates the players’ pre-Oakland careers, how they exploded upon reaching the majors with the A’s, and what happened when the two moved on. While Canseco has admitted his steroid use, McGwire ducked the question when Congress asked about his use by saying, “I am not here to discuss the past.” Tafoya investigates the claims of each. The Bash Brothers revolutionized baseball; Tafoya discusses whether it was for better or for worse and paints a colorful portrait of the duo’s rise to popularity and their ensuing exposure and shame. Bash Brothers: A Legacy Subpoenaed is the first book to fully investigate how these two players helped shape baseball for years to come.
