Book My Best Worst Year

Download or read book My Best Worst Year written by Alison Tucker and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Alison, I've got bad news.' The voice of the pathologist at the other end of the telephone confirmed for Alison Tucker the news no woman ever wants to hear: she had breast cancer. Once the shock had settled, Alison decided that she would take charge. Not only would she take ownership of the dreaded disease, but she would do so with a positive mindset and prepare herself as best she could for what was to come. She did detailed research and paid close heed to what she was told by others who had walked the path before her. As she navigated her way through surgery and the chemotherapy and radiotherapy that followed, Alison's determination paid off. Not only did she make new friends, but she learnt valuable life lessons too: acceptance of the illness for what it was, the amazing impact of ongoing advances in medical science, and the importance of being able to ask for – and receive – help. In My Best Worst Year – A Breast Cancer Story Alison gives us an authentic account of her experience, offering insights and advice for others who might one day face the same diagnosis. You will accompany her on her highs, empathise with her lows, and be amused by humorous anecdotes along the way. Through the generous support of family and friends, she has amassed a collection of practical tips for both patients and supporters which she shares with open-hearted honesty. What to take to chemotherapy sessions. What to look for when choosing a wig. What side effects a person can expect when having the various types of cancer treatment. What to say, and what not to say, to a cancer patient. How to remove stress from a cancer patient's life. What kind of gifts and gestures are most appreciated. Contrary to Alison's expectations, her year of treatment turned out to be her best worst year. By telling her story, she underlines the importance of a positive attitude and hopes to show that a person can still lead a productive and enjoyable life even after being diagnosed with cancer. 'I learnt the power of gratitude, a learning that I will cherish forever and that I will draw on in no small measure in the good times and the bad.'

Book After the Cure

Download or read book After the Cure written by Emily K. Abel and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chemo brain. Fatigue. Chronic pain. Insomnia. Depression. These are just a few of the ongoing, debilitating symptoms that plague some breast-cancer survivors long after their treatments have officially ended. After the Cure is a compelling read filled with fascinating portraits of more than seventy women who are living with the aftermath of breast cancer." "Having heard repeatedly that "the problems are all in your head," many don't know where to turn for help. The doctors who now refuse to validate their symptoms are often the very ones they depended on to provide life-saving treatments. Sometimes family members who provided essential support through months of chemotherapy and radiation don't believe them. Their work lives, already disrupted by both cancer and its treatment, are further undermined by the lingering symptoms. And every symptom serves as a constant reminder of the trauma of diagnosis, the ordeal of treatment, and the specter of recurrence." "Most narratives about surviving breast cancer end with the conclusion of chemotherapy and radiation, painting stereotypical portraits of triumphantly healthy survivors, women who not only survive but emerge better and stronger than before. After the Cure allows us to hear the voices of those who are silenced by the optimistic breast cancer culture, women who live with a broad array of health problems long after therapy ends. Here, at last, survivors step out of the shadows and speak compellingly about their real stories, giving voice to the complicated, often painful realities of life after the cure."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance as though no one is watching you Love as though you have never been hurt Sing as though no one can hear you Live as though heaven is here on earth - Anonymous For millions of women, the words "You have breast cancer" are a harsh reality. For Black women, those words hit especially hard as the mortality rate for Black women is staggering. It's a battle Karen Eubanks Jackson knows all too well. A FOUR-time breast cancer survivor, Jackson has used her triumphs, tragedies and lessons learned to inspire others. Now, she’s sharing it all in this evocative new book, In the Company of My Sisters. First diagnosed in 1993, Jackson knew little about the disease, despite the fact that she’d had a relative die from breast cancer. It was, after all, a silent shame the family kept. Determined to educate herself, Jackson devoured herself in research. And when she couldn’t find information or support specifically for Black women, she set out to fill that void, creating Sisters Network Inc., the only national survivorship-run organization designed to increase local and national attention to the devastating impact that breast cancer has in the Black community. In the Company of My Sisters is Jackson’s story. Her truth in battling the disease for 27 years. How she survived. How she succeeded and built a national sisterhood of Black breast cancer survivors. How she hopes to continue inspiring and educating others along the way. The book is filled with personal experiences and observations from Jackson as well as other survivors, this book will give insight into what shaped Jackson into a woman able to beat breast cancer – again and again and again. And with all the valuable information Jackson has accumulated over the years, the book will also serve as a one-stop resource for all your breast cancer questions. For those battling breast cancer, those walking the journey with survivors, and those who just want to educate themselves, In the Company of My Sisters will inspire you by the beauty and strength of the human spirit and why Jackson has made it her life’s mission change the course of the narrative surrounding the disease and help Black women take action to beat breast cancer.

  • ISBN : 113541825X
  • Pages : 443 pages

Download or read book Breast Cancer written by Julianne S Oktay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I will always and forever feel I have a 'hole' in my life where my mother once existed.” “I think, when you have to think about the fact you might have to take care of your parents someday and juggle kids at the same time…It's a scary proposition.” “We had open communication during and before the breast cancer. But then after the breast cancer, I was often afraid to bring things up, in trying to protect Mom.” This insightful book tells the stories of women whose mothers had breast cancer. It uses their own voices to express the common fears and expectations of daughters in the periods before and during their mothers' illnesses, involving genetic risks, death and dying, and changes in their relationships. The case studies, tables and figures, and two appendices will benefit health professionals and counselors, while the poignant narratives will help mothers and daughters better understand their experiences with breast cancer. “I was kind of surprised to be alive and free of cancer at age 42, when at this point my mother was crippled by metastases. When I get to be 43—the age at which my mother died, or maybe when I get to 44—it's like, 'what do I do?' I have this life that I didn't expect to have.” Breast Cancer: Daughters Tell Their Stories presents the results of a qualitative, grounded theory study of breast cancer survivors, providing in-depth information about an aspect of breast cancer that has been previously overlooked. The book examines the daughters' experiences through four phases—the period prior to mother's illness, the period during mother's illness and treatment, the period following mother's death (if mother dies), and the long-term impact. From this study, recommendations are compiled for providing or improving services for tomorrow's daughters. “The radical mastectomy left her scarred and disfigured below her nightgown. It was bruised and nasty looking. That was kind of scary. I think that has terrified me since. Sometimes I'll have pains in my left breast and that's what I visualize. It's terrifying.” “I'm not really obsessed about dying of cancer. I'm more along the line of, 'If this is going to happen to me, and there's a chance it's going to, I'm gonna survive. I'm not going to die from it.” From an empathetic perspective, this book reveals how many daughters react to and deal with their mothers' diagnoses, depending on their age and family situation at the time of their mothers' illnesses. It shows how daughters can gain a more accurate idea of their level of risk by providing educational materials and developing new strategies for communication. It also helps breast cancer survivors see how their illnesses can shape their daughters' future outlook, offering new inspiration for resolving and preventing family crises.

Download or read book Are You Kidding Me written by Lucy Morrison and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book is about being diagnosed with breast cancer and all the wonderful games I got to play. It starts out with the mammogram and further testing and continues with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. I was fortunate to have a less-invasive type of cancer and didnt need the kind of chemotherapy that makes your hair fall out, but I still had problems. I am a nurse, but I was unaware of most of the processes involved in the treatment of breast cancer. I did learn a lot about diagnosis, testing, and prognosis of different types of breast cancer. I also learned a lot about being the patient and how easy it is to get lost in the shuffle. The treatment has become routine for some of the caregivers, and it is easy to get treated like a disease and not a person. I wanted to share my experience to hopefully help others be able to fight for and demand the best treatment for themselves.
