Download or read book Diary of the Warden s Daughters written by Michael Tombs and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 29, 2005, was a great day for Warden Edgar J. Kassel. He was known as one of the elite federal wardens in the United States Bureau of Prisons. That day was a bitter-sweet challenge as he arrived at the brand-new federal penitentiary in Jamesburg, New Jersey, as the chief administrator of the prison. The funeral of his best friend, Reverend Ronald F. Barfield, was on that day, and Warden Kassel is completing last-minute staff reports before leaving his prison office to attend his best friend’s funeral. One month ago, in August 2005, Warden Kassel received an anonymous e-mail, calling Reverend Ronald F. Barfield “the most dangerous political enemy of the Black Youth Organization in America and in the world.” The e-mail read, “He is either a stooge or a traitor.” Warden Edgar J. Kassel feared that Reverend Barfield’s enemies were threatened because Reverend Barfield requested that the United States Justice Department should open an FBI investigation into the Black Youth Organization in reference to federal mail fraud. As Warden Kassel left his office on his way to the prison parking lot, he passed several low-level security prison inmates as he approached his car. As he entered his car and placed the key in the ignition, his car immediately exploded, killing three low-level security prison inmates and seriously wounding several low-level security prison inmates. However, Warden Kassel’s body was completely pulverized and burned beyond recognition. The only evidence recovered was Reverend Barfield’s obituary, identified as part of Warden Kassel’s burned suit jacket.

Download or read book The Mirror Diary written by Garrett Hongo and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volume in the Poets on Poetry series, which collects critical works by contemporary poets, gathering together the articles, interviews, and book reviews by which they have articulated the poetics of a new generation. The Mirror Diary tracks the emergence of an original poetic voice and a learned consciousness amid multiple and sometimes competing influences of complex literary traditions and regional and ethnic histories. Beginning with a literary inquiry into the history of Japanese Americans in Hawai`i and California, Garrett Hongo draws on his own history to consider the mosaic of American identities—personal, cultural, and poetic—in the context of a postmodern diaspora. Hongo’s essays attest to the breadth of what he considers his cultural inheritance and literary antecedents, ranging from the poets of China’s T’ang Dynasty to American poets such as Walt Whitman and Charles Olson. He explains free-verse prosody by way of John Coltrane’s jazz; praises his contemporaries, poets David Mura, Edward Hirsch, and Mark Jarman; and acknowledges his mentors, Bert Meyers and Charles Wright. In other pieces he engages with controversies and contestations in contemporary Asian American literature, confronts the politics of race and the legacy of Japanese American internment during World War II, offers paeans to the Hawaiian landscape, and addresses immigrants newly arrived in America with a warm welcome. The Mirror Diary is the work of a poet fully engaged with contemporary politics and poetics and committed to the study and celebration of diverse traditions.

Download or read book Saluki written by Brian Patrick Duggan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the oldest known breeds of domesticated dogs, the Saluki traveled throughout the Middle East with desert tribes, who valued the dogs for their ability to hunt gazelles. Famously painted on the walls of the Pharaohs' tombs, the Salukis' history intrigued English dog enthusiasts who were instrumental in popularizing the breed and importing it to Europe and the United States in the early 20th century. This book tells the story of those who brought the Saluki to the West, most notably Florence Amherst, who discovered the dogs while in Egypt and went on to breed 50 litters. Other world travelers who fell under the Salukis' spell included Lady Anne Blunt, Austen Layard and Gertrude Bell. Also covered are lesser-known Saluki aficionados, mainly military officers who hunted with their hounds in Iraq, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt and sought to replicate that experience at home.

If you are accompanied by a dog, you can talk to anyone, and anyone can talk to you—about anything. After being dismissed from his job as a radio presenter, Edward Stourton had plenty of time to walk his English Springer Spaniel, Kudu, in London’s Battersea Park. Stourton found himself contemplating a variety of dog-associated questions like How well does he really know Kudu?; Can our dogs know us?; Do they understand what ownership is?; How loyal are they really?; and Do they know guilt? Then he began examining more complex subjects—art, sexual politics, war, government, philosophy, and life in general—from the amusing perspective of a man walking his dog. In Diary of a Dog Walker, Stourton shares excerpts from his columns, full of insights gained from his adventures with Kudu, as well as anecdotes from his personal life. It adds up to a wise and witty read perfect for dog-lovers everywhere. Praise for Diary of a Dog Walker “Utter magic. Edward Stourton is civilized, charming, and writes like an angel.
