Book Murder of the U S Attorney Congressman Sickles Crime of Passion in 1859 A Historical True Crime Short

Download or read book Murder of the U S Attorney Congressman Sickles Crime of Passion in 1859 A Historical True Crime Short written by R. Barri Flowers and published by R. Barri Flowers. This book was released on with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From R. Barri Flowers, award-winning criminologist and bestselling author of Murdered by the King of Western Swing, Murder at the Pencil Factory, Murder of the Doctor’s Wife, and Murder During the Chicago World’s Fair, comes the gripping historical true crime short, Murder of the U.S. Attorney: Congressman Sickles’ Crime of Passion in 1859. On February 27, 1859, Philip Barton Key II, the forty-year-old U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, was gunned down while standing in Lafayette Square, a public park across from the White House. His killer was Rep. Daniel Sickles, a thirty-nine-year-old New York congressman and lawyer whose striking young wife, Teresa Sickles, Key had been having an affair with. Upon discovering his wife’s infidelity, Sickles became enraged and had the deadly encounter with her suitor. Afterward, he surrendered to authorities, confessed, was charged with murder, and went to trial. In spite of the cold-blooded and premeditated nature of the attack, Sickles used a defense of temporary insanity for his actions, the first such time this type of legal defense was employed in the United States. He was acquitted as a result and the “temporarily insane” justification for homicide or other serious intimate-involved offenses became a common defense for so-called crimes of passion. Sickles, who was no stranger to public scandals and controversy, was able to effectively get away with murder. He would reconcile with his wife for a short time, continue his career in politics, and become a decorated soldier for the Union Army during the Civil War, and a diplomat, before dying in his nineties. His long life notwithstanding, taking the life of his wife’s lover, Philip Key, in a fit of jealousy would forever remain a major part of Daniel Sickles’ legacy, as chronicled in this compelling trip back in time of more than 150 years. Bonus material includes a complete and riveting historical true crime short, Dead at the Saddleworth Moor: The Crimes of Serial Killers Ian Brady & Myra Hindley; and excerpts from the author’s bestselling true crime anthologies, The Dreadful Acts of Jack the Ripper and Other True Tales of Serial Murder and Prostitutes, and Murder and Menace: Riveting True Crime Tales (Vol. 3).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Word argues that the Hollywood novel opened up space for cultural critique of the film industry at a time when the industry lacked the capacity to critique itself. While the young studio system worked tirelessly to burnish its public image in the wake of celebrity scandal, several industry insiders wrote fiction to fill in what newspapers and fan magazines left out. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, these novels aimed to expose the invisible machinery of classical Hollywood cinema, including not only the evolving artifice of the screen but also the promotional discourse that complemented it. As likeminded filmmakers in the 1940s and 1950s gradually brought the dark side of the industry to the screen, however, the Hollywood novel found itself struggling to live up to its original promise of delivering the unfilmable. By the 1960s, desperate to remain relevant, the genre had devolved into little more than erotic fantasy of movie stars behind closed doors, perhaps the only thing the public couldn't already find elsewhere. Still, given their unique ability to speak beyond the institutional restraints of their time, these earlier works offer a window into the industry's dynamic creation and re-creation of itself in the public imagination.

Book Coconut Layer Cake Murder

Download or read book Coconut Layer Cake Murder written by Joanne Fluke and published by Kensington. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback! In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Joanne Fluke's 25th installment in the bestselling Hannah Swensen Mystery series, Hannah leaves Lake Eden to help a friend in sunny California--but an unexpected phone call brings her back to a cold Minnesota winter for a murder investigation, and of course, new criminally delicious recipes! When Hannah learns that her sister Michelle's boyfriend, Detective Lonnie Murphy, is the prime suspect in a murder case, she goes straight from a movie studio sound stage to the Los Angeles airport. Back in frigid Minnesota, she discovers that proving Lonnie's innocence will be harder than figuring out what went wrong with a recipe. Lonnie remembers only parts of the night he went out to a local bar and ended up driving a very impaired woman home. He knows he helped her to her bedroom, but he doesn't recall anything else until he woke up on her couch the following morning. When he went to the bedroom to check on her, he was shocked to discover she was dead. Hannah doesn't know what to believe--only that exonerating a suspect who can't remember is almost impossible, especially since Lonnie's brother, Detective Rick Murphy, and Lonnie's partner, Chief Detective Mike Kingston, have been taken off the case. Before everything comes crashing down on Lonnie like a heaping slice of coconut layer cake, it'll be up to Hannah to rack up enough clues to toast a flaky killer...

Book The ABCs of Classic Hollywood

Download or read book The ABCs of Classic Hollywood written by Robert Beverley Ray and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking about the kind of filmmaking now known as Classic Hollywood, the most popular and influential cinema ever invented, Vincente Minnelli once gave away its secret: "I feel that a picture that stays with you is made up of a hundred or more hidden things. They're things that the audience is not conscious of, but that accumulate." How would we go about finding those things? What method would enable us to retrieve them, and by doing so, to understand better how Hollywood films got made? The ABCs of Classic Hollywood attempts to answer those questions by looking closely at four movies from the 1930-1945 period when the American Studio System reached the peak of its economic and cultural power: Grand Hotel, The Philadelphia Story, The Maltese Falcon, and Meet Me in St. Louis. To avoid the predictable generalizations that have plagued Film Studies, Ray works with the movies' details, treated as initially mysterious, but promising, clues: e.g., Grand Hotel's coffin and room assignments; The Philadelphia Story's diving board and license plate PA55; The Maltese Falcon's clocks and missing bed; Meet Me in St. Louis's violinist and ribboned cat. By producing at least 26 entries for each of these films (one for every letter of the alphabet), Ray demonstrates that a movie's details contain the record of the work and ideas that produced them, the endless negotiation between commercial efficiency and seductive enchantment. In our unconscious memories, we recognize something in the movies, something tantalizing and just out of reach. This book unlocks those memories, making them conscious and explicit, so that they will help us understand the most powerful and important storytelling system ever designed.
