Book A Killing on Ring Jaw Bluff

Download or read book A Killing on Ring Jaw Bluff written by William Rawlings and published by . This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Killing on Ring Jaw Bluff recounts the rise and fall of Georgia's rural population as told through the story of Charles Graves Rawlings. His life followed the fortunes of cotton-based agriculture and Georgia's small towns after the Civil War. From modest beginnings as a liveryman, Rawlings acquired nearly 40,000 acres of land, as well as a bank, a railroad, and diverse other businesses. By 1920, he was one of the state's wealthier men, with a loving wife and family, and powerful political connections. Five years later he was facing a life sentence for his role in the alleged murder of his first cousin, Gus Tarbutton. The growth of wealth in rural Georgia during the first two decades of the twentieth century was dramatic, as was the economic crash of the so-called Great Recession of 1920/1921. While the rest of the nation recovered rapidly, transitioning to the era of the Roaring Twenties, the rural South remained mired in social and financial despair. The forces that led to this economic whipsaw were multiple, including the loosening of credit and inflation that accompanied and followed World War I, the effective monetization of cotton as a commodity, the competition for labor from the industrialized North, and the bubble in cotton prices that burst in 1920. Although the boll weevil arrived in the state in 1915, it was only in 1921 that the pest began to severely affect the cotton crop. By then other economic forces were in play, relegating the role of the weevil to that of delivering a final blow to an already moribund economy. This is the story of rural Georgia that foreshadowed our own day, our own story. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intriguing biography recounts the life of the legendary Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, revealing his true role in the development of Las Vegas and debunking some of the common myths about his notoriety. This account of the life of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel follows his beginnings in the Lower East Side of New York to his role in the development of the famous Flamingo Hotel and Casino. Larry D. Gragg examines Siegel's image as portrayed in popular culture, dispels the myths about Siegel's contribution to the founding of Las Vegas, and reveals some of the more lurid details about his life. Unlike previous biographies, this book is the first to make use of more than 2,400 pages of FBI files on Siegel, referencing documents about the reputed gangster in the New York City Municipal Archives and reviewing the 1950–51 testimony before the Senate Committee on organized crime. Chapters cover his early involvement with gangs in New York, his emergence as a favorite among the Hollywood elite in the late 1930s, his lucrative exploits in illegal gambling and horse racing, and his opening of the "fabulous" Flamingo in 1946. The author also draws upon the recollections of Siegel's eldest daughter to reveal a side of the mobster never before studied—the nature of his family life.

Book Female Aerialists in the 1920s and Early 1930s

Download or read book Female Aerialists in the 1920s and Early 1930s written by Kate Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female solo aerialists of the 1920s and early 1930s were internationally popular performers in the largest live performance mass entertainment of the period in the UK and USA. Yet these aerialists and this period in circus history have been largely forgotten despite the iconic image of ‘the’ female aerialist still flaring in the popular imagination. Kate Holmes uses insights gained as a practitioner to reconstruct in detail the British and American performances and public personae of key stars such as Lillian Leitzel, Luisita Leers, and the Flying Codonas, revealing what is performed and implicit in today’s practice. Using a wealth of original sources, this book considers the forgotten stars whose legacy of the cultural image of the female aerialist echoes. Locating performers within wider cultural histories of sport, glamour, and gender, this book asks important questions about their stardom, including: Why were female aerialists so alluring when their muscularity challenged conservative ideals of femininity and how did they participate in change? What was it about their movements and the spaces they performed in that activated such strong audience responses? This book is vital reading for students and practitioners of aerial performance, circus, gender, popular performance, and performance studies.
