Book excerpt: I believe that (irrespective of differences in individual temper and character) the excellence of an artist, as such, depends wholly on refinement of perception, and that it is this, mainly, which a master or a school can teach; so that while powers of invention distinguish man from man, powers of perception distinguish school from school. All great schools enforce delicacy of drawing and subtlety of sight: and the only rule which I have, as yet, found to be without exception respecting art, is that all great art is delicate. I am nearly convinced, that when once we see keenly enough, there is very little difficulty in drawing what we see; but, even supposing that this difficulty be still great, I believe that the sight is a more important thing than the drawing; and I would rather teach drawing that my pupils may learn to love Nature, than teach the looking at Nature that they may learn to draw...

Book Economics and Utopia

Download or read book Economics and Utopia written by Geoffrey M Hodgson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the fall of the Berlin Wall we have been told that no alternative to Western capitalism is possible or desirable. This book challenges this view with two arguments. First, the above premise ignores the enormous variety within capitalism itself. Second, there are enormous forces of transformation within contemporary capitalisms, associated with moves towards a more knowledge-intensive economy. These forces challenge the traditional bases of contract and employment, and could lead to a quite different socio-economic system. Without proposing a static blueprint, this book explores this possible scenario.

Book The Economics of Needs and Limits

Download or read book The Economics of Needs and Limits written by Frank Rotering and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics is the study of allocation, production, distribution, consumption, and directly related matters. Standard or mainstream economics addresses these topics from the capitalist perspective and is currently the dominant school of thought. However, capitalism is an expansionary system that is a root cause of the ecological crisis. It must therefore be urgently superseded. Because standard economics faithfully reflects the system's ecocidal logic, it can no longer guide humankind's economic activities. ENL is a conceptual framework that is intended to replace standard economics in this guiding role. Its main purpose is to provide analysts with the analytical tools required to establish rational economic objectives based on the goal of sustainable well-being. The concepts and methods of standard economics will still be required, but primarily to analyze an economy's operations as these objectives are being pursued.
