Book Multivariate fractional regression estimation of econometric share models

Download or read book Multivariate fractional regression estimation of econometric share models written by John Mullahy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes and applies econometric strategies for estimating regression models of economic share data outcomes where the shares may take boundary values (zero and one) with nontrivial probability. The main focus of the paper is on the conditional mean structures of such data. The paper proposes an extension of the fractional regression methodology proposed by Papke and Wooldridge, 1996, 2008, in univariate cross-sectional and panel contexts. The paper discusses the stochastic aspects of share definition and measurement, and summarizes important features of the existing literature on econometric strategies for share model estimation. The paper then goes on to discuss the univariate fractional regression estimation strategies proposed by Papke and Wooldridge and to extend the fractional regression approach to estimation of and inference about regression models describing the multivariate share data. Some issues involving outcome aggregation/ disaggregation are considered, as is a full likelihood estimation approach based on Dirichlet-multinomial models. The paper demonstrates the workings of these various empirical strategies by estimating models of financial asset portfolio shares using data from the 2001, 2004, and 2007 U.S. Surveys of Consumer Finances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Credit is the lifeblood of capitalism and development. Brazil, Russia, India, and China-also called BRICs-have become important creditors to developing countries. However, how will their loans affect economic development and democracy in recipient countries? We need to understand why governments accept Chinese over Western loan offers before we can predict their likely consequences. In Raise the Debt, Jonas B. Bunte systematically explains how governments choose among competing loan offers. Using statistical analyses and extensive interview data, he shows that the strings attached to loans vary across creditors. Consequently, one domestic interest group may benefit from Chinese credit but not U.S. loans, while the opposite is the case for other groups. Bunte provides evidence that governments cater to whichever domestic interest group is politically dominant when deciding between competing loan offers. Combining a comparative politics approach with international political economy methods, Raise the Debt shows how a deeper understanding of governments' borrowing decisions is critical for gaining insights into how these loans could impact growth and democracy on a global scale.

Book Digital Connectivity in sub Saharan Africa A Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Digital Connectivity in sub Saharan Africa A Comparative Perspective written by Mr.Emre Alper and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher digital connectivity is expected to bring opportunities to leapfrog development in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Experience within the region demonstrates that if there is an adequate digital infrastructure and a supportive business environment, new forms of business spring up and create jobs for the educated as well as the less educated. The paper first confirms the global digital divide through the unsupervised machine learning clustering K-means algorithm. Next, it derives a composite digital connectivity index, in the spirit of De Muro-Mazziotta-Pareto, for about 190 economies. Descriptive analysis shows that majority of SSA countries lag in digital connectivity, specifically in infrastructure, internet usage, and knowledge. Finally, using fractional logit regressions we document that better business enabling and regulatory environment, financial access, and urbanization are associated with higher digital connectivity.

Book Women s empowerment and crop diversification in Bangladesh A possible pathway to climate change adaptation and better nutrition

Download or read book Women s empowerment and crop diversification in Bangladesh A possible pathway to climate change adaptation and better nutrition written by De Pinto, Alessandro and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing literature shows that climate change will likely affect several of the dimensions that determine people’s food security status in Bangladesh, from crop production to the availability of food products and their accessibility. Crop diversification represents a farm-level response that reduces exposure to climate-related risks and it has also been shown to increase diet diversity and contribute to the reduction in micronutrient deficiencies. In fact, the Government of Bangladesh has several policies in place that encourage and support agricultural diversification. However, despite this support the level of crop diversification in the country remains low. Women empowerment has been linked to diversified diets and positively associated with better child nutrition outcomes. Furthermore, although traditionally their role in agriculture tends to be undervalued, women involvement has already been shown to affect agricultural production choices and enhance technical efficiency. This paper connects three different areas of inquiry - climate change, gender and nutrition – by exploring whether women’s empowerment in agricultural production leads to increased diversification in the use of farmland. Specifically, we use a series of econometric techniques to evaluate whether there is sufficient evidence to claim that a higher levels of empowerment lead to greater diversity in the allocation of farmland to agricultural crops. Our results reveal that indeed some aspects of women empowerment, but not all, lead to a more diversified use of farmland and to a transition for cereal production to other uses like vegetables and fruits. These findings provide some possible pathways for gender-sensitive interventions that promote crop diversity as a risk management tool and as a way to improve the availability of nutritious crops.

Book Stay Competitive in the Digital Age The Future of Banks

Download or read book Stay Competitive in the Digital Age The Future of Banks written by MissEstelle X Liu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest advancement in financial technology has posed unprecedented challenges for incumbent banks. This paper analyzes the implications of these challenges on bank competitveness, and explores the factors that could support digital advancement in banks. The analysis shows that the traditionally leading role of banks in advancing financial technology has diminished in recent years, and suggests that onoing efforts to catch up to the digital frontier could lead to a more concentrated banking industry, as smaller and less tech-savvy banks struggle to survive. Cross-country evidence has suggested that banks in high-income economies appear to have been the digital leaders, likely benefiting from a sound digital infrastructure, a strong legal and business environment, and healthy competition. Nonetheless, some digital leaders may fall behind in the coming years in adopting newer technologies due to entrenched consumer behavior favoring older technologies, less active fintech and bigtech companies, and weak bank balance sheets.

Book Multivariate Reduced Rank Regression

Download or read book Multivariate Reduced Rank Regression written by Gregory C. Reinsel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an account of multivariate reduced-rank regression, a tool of multivariate analysis that enjoys a broad array of applications. In addition to a historical review of the topic, its connection to other widely used statistical methods, such as multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), discriminant analysis, principal components, canonical correlation analysis, and errors-in-variables models, is also discussed. This new edition incorporates Big Data methodology and its applications, as well as high-dimensional reduced-rank regression, generalized reduced-rank regression with complex data, and sparse and low-rank regression methods. Each chapter contains developments of basic theoretical results, as well as details on computational procedures, illustrated with numerical examples drawn from disciplines such as biochemistry, genetics, marketing, and finance. This book is designed for advanced students, practitioners, and researchers, who may deal with moderate and high-dimensional multivariate data. Because regression is one of the most popular statistical methods, the multivariate regression analysis tools described should provide a natural way of looking at large (both cross-sectional and chronological) data sets. This book can be assigned in seminar-type courses taken by advanced graduate students in statistics, machine learning, econometrics, business, and engineering.

Book Discrete Choice Methods with Simulation

Download or read book Discrete Choice Methods with Simulation written by Kenneth Train and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the new generation of discrete choice methods, focusing on the many advances that are made possible by simulation. Researchers use these statistical methods to examine the choices that consumers, households, firms, and other agents make. Each of the major models is covered: logit, generalized extreme value, or GEV (including nested and cross-nested logits), probit, and mixed logit, plus a variety of specifications that build on these basics. Simulation-assisted estimation procedures are investigated and compared, including maximum stimulated likelihood, method of simulated moments, and method of simulated scores. Procedures for drawing from densities are described, including variance reduction techniques such as anithetics and Halton draws. Recent advances in Bayesian procedures are explored, including the use of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and its variant Gibbs sampling. The second edition adds chapters on endogeneity and expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms. No other book incorporates all these fields, which have arisen in the past 25 years. The procedures are applicable in many fields, including energy, transportation, environmental studies, health, labor, and marketing.

Book Market Response Models Econometric and Time Series Analysis

Download or read book Market Response Models Econometric and Time Series Analysis written by Dominique M. Hanssens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports over a decade's worth of research on the development of empirical response models that have important uses for generating marketing knowledge and improving marketing decisions. Some of its contributions to marketing are the following: 1. It integrates state-of-the art technical material with discussions of its relevance to management. 2. It provides continuity to a research stream over 20 years old. 3. It illustrates how marketing generalizations are the basis of marketing theory and marketing knowledge. 4. It shows how the research can be applied to marketing planning and forecasting. 5. It presents original research in marketing. The book addresses both marketing researchers and marketing managers. This can be done because empirical decision models are helpful in practice and are also based on theories of response. Econometric and time series analysis (ETS) is one of the few areas in marketing where there is little, if any, conflict between the academic sphere and the world of professional practice. Market Response Models is a sequel to Marketing Models and Econometric Research, published in 1976. It is rare for a research-oriented book in market ing to be updated or to have a sequel. Unlike many other methodologies, ETS research in marketing has stood the test of time. It remains the main method for discovering relations among marketing variables.

Book Semiparametric Estimation of Multivariate Fractional

Download or read book Semiparametric Estimation of Multivariate Fractional written by Willa W. Chen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider the semiparametric estimation of fractional cointegration ina multivariate process of cointegrating rank r amp;gt; 0. We estimate thecointegrating relationships by the eigenvectors corresponding to the rsmallest eigenvalues of an averaged periodogram matrix of tapered, differenced observations. The number of frequencies m used in theperiodogram average is held fixed as the sample size grows. We firstshow that the averaged periodogram matrix converges in distribution to asingular matrix whose null eigenvectors span the space of cointegratingvectors. We then show that the angle between the estimated cointegratingvectors and the space of true cointegrating vectors is Op(nduamp;ocirc;d)where d and du are the memory parameters of the observations andcointegrating errors, respectively. The proposed estimator is invariantto the labeling of the component series, and therefore does not requireone of the variables to be specified as a dependent variable. Wedetermine the rate of convergence of the r smallest eigenvalues of theperiodogram matrix, and present a criterion which allows for consistentestimation of r. Finally, we apply our methodology to the analysis offractional cointegration in interest rates.
