Book excerpt: This important volume-the product of a meeting of a select group of scientists-provides the most recent research results from the world's leaders in the study of toxic pollutants in sediments. It gives practical information on measuring and mapping distributions of concentrations of pollutants and their toxic effects in sediments. Also covered are the use and relative advantages and disadvantages of benthic chambers, sedimentation traps, box corers, "peepers" and other sampling techniques in sediment research and assessment. Important topics covered include: bioassay, elemental speciation, diffuse source problems, nutrient flux, biomethylation, bioavailability, and toxicity assessment. Will help in assessment and monitoring of chemistry, dynamics, bioavailability, and toxicity of pollutants, as well helping to chart courses for remedial action. This book will be of interest to anyone interested in the processes controlling the chemistry and movement of pollutants in sediments, especially: limnologists aquatic toxicologists engineers lake managers ecologists biologists environmental chemists

Book Sediments and Toxic Substances

Download or read book Sediments and Toxic Substances written by Wolfgang Calmano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern sediment research on contaminants five aspects are discussed which, in an overlapping succession, also reflect develop ment of knowledge on particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: (1) identification of sources and their distribution; (2) evaluation of solid/solution relations; (3) study of transfer mecha nisms to biological systems; (4) assessment of environment impact; and (5) selection and further development of remedial measures, in par ticular, of dredged materials. Scientific research and practical develop ment are still expanding in all these individual aspects. Similar to other waste materials, management of contaminated sed iments requires a holistic approach. This means that assessment of biogeochemical reactions, interfacial processes and transfer mecha nisms as well as the prognosis of long-term borderline conditions, in particular of capacity-controlling properties, should be an integrated part of the wider management scheme, i.e., the analytical and experi mental parameters should always be related to potential remediation options for a specific sediment problem. The underlying coordinated project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Science and Technology (now the Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology) provided excellent opportunities for multidisciplinary effort, bringing together biologists, chemists, engineers, geologists and other researchers. During its active phase, the group attracted much interest nationally and internationally. The group members highly appreciate the manifold contacts and invitations during the past five years.

Book Heavy Metal Sediments

    Book Details:
  • Author : LucíA H. Sanz
  • Publisher : Nova Science Publishers
  • Release : 2014-05-14
  • ISBN : 9781614707547
  • Pages : 185 pages

Download or read book Heavy Metal Sediments written by LucíA H. Sanz and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals are naturally present in our environment and trace amounts of metals are essential micronutrients for the growth of many marine organisms. However, excessive amounts of heavy metal can be toxic to marine life. In this book, the authors gather topical research from around the globe in the study of heavy metal sediments. Topics discussed in this compilation include the distribution of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons in soils near a petrochemical complex in China; heavy metals in coastal sea sediments of the eastern Adriatic Sea; environmental assessments of metal concentrations in select rivers, estuaries and coastal sediments; iron contamination in the Bizerte Lagoon of Tunisia and the correlation between millennial mining activities and heavy metal pollution in Spanish estuaries.

Book Contaminated Sediments

Download or read book Contaminated Sediments written by Ulrich Förstner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-04-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediments are increasingly recognized as both a carrier and a possible source of contaminants in aquatic systems, and they may also affect groundwater quality and agricultural products when disposed on land. Four aspects are covered reflecting the development of knowledge in particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: - the identification, surveillance, monitoring and control of sources and distribution of pollutants, - the evaluation of solid/solution relations of contaminants in surface waters, - the study of in-situ processes and mechanisms of pollutant transfer in various compartments of the aquatic ecosystems, - the assessment of the environmental impact of particle-bound contaminants, i.e. the development of sediment quality criteria. A final chapter focusses on practical aspects concerning contaminated sediments.

Book Modeling Mercury Transport and Transformation in the Aquatic Environment

Download or read book Modeling Mercury Transport and Transformation in the Aquatic Environment written by Andrew E. Bale and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many heavy metals are recognized as toxic to aquatic life in minute concentrations. Small amounts of these metals may be bioaccumulated up the food chain, throughout which they can cause disorder and death. Mercury is such a potentially harmful heavy metal and methyl mercury (MeHg), an organic species of mercury, has been found in relatively high levels in fish and invertebrates throughout the world. To effectively evaluate both the potential for harmful bioaccumulation and proposed measures to mitigate that harm, the spatial and temporal distribution of heavy metals within an aquatic system must be characterized. This dissertation provides background on mercury in the environment, reviews numerical models of mercury transport and speciation, and describes the construction and application of a numerical model, RMA4Hg, representing mercury transport and transformation in the aquatic environment.
