Book excerpt: Problems of classroom management and control are a recurring concern for many teachers. Disruptive behaviour and inattention hinder effective learning and impose a constant drain upon the teachers’ emotional resources. Continual nagging at children only increases teacher stress: what is needed is an effective alternative set of strategies. Originally published in 1984, Positive Teaching seeks to meets this need by presenting the behavioural approach to teaching in a clear, direct and lucid way. By adopting the behavioural approach, problem behaviour can be minimised, or rapidly nipped in the bud when it does arise. While punishment may be used in an attempt to stop almost any kind of behaviour, only the appropriate use of positive methods applied contingently, immediately and consistently can teach new, more adaptive behaviour. This is a crucial issue in real teaching and is rarely encountered or even discussed in most teacher education programmes. It is the central focus of Positive Teaching. This book is for all teachers, from the beginning student to experienced head teachers; for those teaching in a first school, and for those teaching sixth-formers; for those experiencing difficulties and for those whose authority is already well established. The behavioural approach offers practical support to those who are struggling and a rationale for the effective, positive strategies of the successful. We can all improve our teaching.

  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Radical Hope written by Noel Pearson and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Radical Hope, one of Australia's most original and provocative thinkers turns his attention to the question of education. Noel Pearson begins with two fundamental questions: How to ensure the survival of a people, their culture and way of life? And can education transform the lives of the disadvantaged many, or will it at best raise up a fortunate few? Pearson argues powerfully that underclass students, many of whom are Aboriginal, should receive a rigorous schooling that gives them the means to negotiate the wider world. He examines the long - term failure of educational policy in Australia, especially in the indigenous sector, and asks why it is always ''Groundhog Day'' when there are lessons to be learned from innovations now underway. Pearson introduces new findings from research and practice, and takes on some of the most difficult and controversial issues. Throughout, he searches for the radical centre - the way forward that will raise up the many, preserve culture, and ensure no child is left behind.

Book Positive Teaching for Australian Primary Classrooms

Download or read book Positive Teaching for Australian Primary Classrooms written by Kevin Wheldall and published by . This book was released on 2020-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to teach effectively, it is essential to have good classroom behaviour management skills so that students remain engaged throughout the lesson. These are the very skills that we advocate and teach at MultiLit as the backbone of all of our programs. We call it Positive Teaching. Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM and Dr?Robyn Wheldall have revised and rewritten a new edition of an earlier text (written with the late Dr?Frank Merrett), Positive Teaching for Australian Primary Classrooms."Challenging behaviour in the classroom is common, but less common are teachers who feel confident and equipped to tackle varying student needs and behaviours. Every teacher wants the time to teach and build important relationships with their students. Disruptive behaviours can steal this time and Positive Teaching for Australian Primary Classrooms is a resource that gives it back. This book is suitable for all teachers, needed for all students, and essential for inclusion in every tertiary teacher training program in the country. Every school needs positive teachers." Dr Kelly-Ann Allen | Treasurer of the Australian College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists and editor of the Educational and Developmental Psychologist

Book Digital Storytelling in Higher Education

Download or read book Digital Storytelling in Higher Education written by Grete Jamissen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book broadens the scope and impact of digital storytelling in higher education. It outlines how to teach, research and build communities in tertiary institutions through the particular form of audio-visual communication known as digital storytelling by developing relationships across professions, workplaces and civil society. The book is framed within the context of ‘The Four Scholarships’ developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the advancement and redefining of teaching, including the scholarships of discovery, integration, application, and teaching and learning. Across four sections, this volume considers the potential of digital storytelling to improve, enhance and expand teaching, learning, research, and interactions with society. Written by an international range of academics, researchers and practitioners, from disciplines spanning medicine, anthropology, education, social work, film and media studies, rhetoric and the humanities, the book demonstrates the variety of ways in which digital storytelling offers solutions to key challenges within higher education for students, academics and citizens. It will be compelling reading for students and researchers working in education and sociology.

Book Making Sense of Interventions for Children with Developmental Disorders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, aimed at both parents and professionals, the authors discuss the non-evidence-based interventions that proliferate in the fields of children's speech, language, literacy, fluency, voice, communication, attention, cognition, working memory, behaviour and social connectedness. They explore the science - or lack thereof - behind the interventions and suggest evidence-based alternatives that enjoy stronger scientific support. The authors approach their topic with a deep understanding of, and empathy for, the parents and professionals who are doubtful about conventional treatments, disappointed with the practitioners associated with them, and attracted to controversial interventions.

Book Teaching Phonics in Context

Download or read book Teaching Phonics in Context written by David Hornsby and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two highly respected educators, TEACHING PHONICS IN CONTEXT describes how phonics can be taught as children learn to read and write. The book looks at classrooms that shimmer and shine as children learn phonics through reading picture books, having fun with rhymes, playing with words and writing meaningful texts. It explains how within these contexts children learn the sounds of the English language and the letters of the alphabet and the relationship between them. Teaching Phonics in Context presents guidelines for teaching letter-sound patterns while debunking the myth that there is a single valid sequence of instruction and revealing commercial programs to be unnecessary and often flawed. The book also includes 'teacher knowledge' sections to provide teachers with the confidence to teach phonics through meaningful reading and writing activities.
