Download or read book Teaching and Learning in the Intermediate Multiage Classroom written by Alice Leeds and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2002-06-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching and Learning in the Intermediate Multiage Classroom describes in practical detail a creative and effective teaching practice in multiage elementary classrooms, one that integrates challenging academics with personalized teaching and learning. Written by David Marshak, an educator who has studied multiage classrooms for over 12 years, and Alice Leeds, who has taught in multiage classrooms for over a decade, this book describes methods for teaching in this type of environment that provide a better form of education than the conventional age-graded classroom. Leeds and Marshak examine the benefits of multiage classrooms by exploring how such classrooms function and provide a detailed description of an individual unit designed to maximize the potential of this non-traditional form of intermediate education. By describing the benefits multiage classrooms provide in terms of personal, social, and academic achievement, plus outlining a process for teachers to become successful in this environment, this book is bound to interest administrators, teachers, and researchers in education.

Book Stars in the Window

Download or read book Stars in the Window written by Anne Alexander Bingham and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STARS IN THE WINDOW is an historical novel written for middle grade readers. When eleven-year-old Jessie meets Mrs. Sakamoto her life is changed. It is 1943 and the U.S. is at war with Japan. Jessie s Dad is an officer on a ship in the Pacific. When Mom hires Mrs. Sakamoto to help in the family flower shop, Jessie finds a warm friend who teaches her about chopsticks, Ikebana flower arranging, and origami. Mrs. Sakamoto had been released from Amache, a Japanese internment camp, and Jessie struggles to understand the difference between an enemy and her Japanese-American friend. The story depicts life on the U.S. home front during WW II, with rationing, blackouts, and victory gardens. The reader will also relate the story to present day issues: prejudice and response to cultural and racial diversity, fear of those who are national enemies, and a pre-adolescent culture that involves snubbing and cliques. Imbedded in the story are parallels with today in conservation and recycling, suspicion of Muslims, and need to understand and relate to members of a culture different from mainstream America.
