Book Multi functional Protective Coatings for Plastics Using Open air Spray Plasma Deposition

Download or read book Multi functional Protective Coatings for Plastics Using Open air Spray Plasma Deposition written by Yichuan Ding and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transparent plastics are increasingly important to emerging technologies such as light-weight transportation, flexible electronics, and display technologies. However, due to the low surface hardness, plastics can be easily scratched and degraded which significantly reduce their optical qualities and lifetimes. In this dissertation, I will focus on the development of durable functional protective coatings for plastics and new understandings of their mechanical properties including adhesion, stiffness, and moisture-assisted cracking behavior. I will demonstrate two scalable processing strategies for synthesizing these coatings, namely, spray deposition of sol-gel precursors and open-air plasma deposition. Firstly, I will focus on the processing of an organosilicate-based bilayer coating with unprecedented combination of adhesion and stiffness using open-air spray and plasma depositions. The bilayer coating exhibited a > 90% transparency in the visible wavelengths, 8-fold the adhesion energy and 4-fold the Young's modulus of commercial sol-gel polysiloxane coatings. The coating deposition rate, elastic modulus, hardness and adhesion to poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrates will be discussed and correlated to the molecular structures and chemical compositions of the coatings. Secondly, I will demonstrate the molecular design strategies for engineering coating's deformation rate sensitivity and fracture resistance in a moist environment. With increasing non-hydrolysable organic network connectivity, the mechanical behavior of the coatings can vary from almost perfectly elastic to increasingly viscoelastic in a controlled fashion. The related fracture resistance was also found to be significantly improved. New insights into the fundamental molecular-scale relaxation and cracking mechanisms of the coatings will also be highlighted. Finally, I will describe a novel and versatile dual-source deposition method involving ultrasonic spraying and open-air plasma deposition for making durable multifunctional nanocomposite coatings. Previous work for making nanocomposites focused on incorporating nanoparticles by either in-situ growth in the matrix or by dispersing into the matrix precursor before deposition. However, in this new method, the nanoparticles and coating matrix are independently deposited which eliminate the potential difficulties associated with preparing high mass fraction composites with well-dispersed nanoparticles. The capability of incorporating several different functional nanoparticles into durable coating matrix with good nanoparticle dispersity, uniformity and strong matrix-nanoparticle interfacial interactions will be highlighted. The effect of nanoparticle concentration, size, and film thicknesses on coatings surface morphology, optical properties and mechanical properties will also be discussed.

Book Atmospheric Plasma Deposition of Transparent Coatings on Polymers

Download or read book Atmospheric Plasma Deposition of Transparent Coatings on Polymers written by Linying Cui and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric plasma enables plasma assisted coating deposition in ambient air at low temperature on large and/or complex geometry substrates. It has huge potential for coating synthesis and materials surface treatment at lower cost without the necessity of vacuum equipment, for applications of energy, display, aerospace, etc. In this dissertation, I present the results of atmospheric plasma deposition of transparent hard protective coatings on polymers. In order to deposit high quality coatings, we find that the interaction between atmospheric plasma, coating, and polymer substrate should all be optimized. Firstly, I studied the interaction between atmospheric plasma and polymer substrates. Atmospheric plasma was used to pretreat polycarbonate and stretched poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces in order to enhance the adhesion of polymers to inorganic coatings. The treatment time and the chemical structure of the polymers were found to be important factors. For polycarbonate, a short treatment increased the adhesion energy by four times, while longer treatment resulted in low molecular-weight species formation and decreased adhesion. Next, I deposited dense silica coatings on polymers using atmospheric plasma. The coating deposition rate, molecular network structure, density, Young's modulus and adhesion to polymers exhibited a strong dependence on the precursor delivery temperature and rate, and the functionality and number of silicon atoms in the precursor molecules. The highest Young's modulus of the atmospheric plasma silica was four times higher than that of commercial sol-gel polysiloxane coatings. After that, I successfully deposited carbon-bridged hybrid organosilicate coating using atmospheric plasma, with the ethyl bridges incorporated in the silicate network under the ambient air environment. These coatings doubled the adhesion energy to polymers due to the molecular bridging effect, compared to commercial sol-gel polysiloxane coatings. Finally, I deposited a hard, adhesive, and highly transparent bilayer structure on polymers, with the bottom layer highly adhesive to polymer and the top layer hard to resist scratches. The method overcomes the challenge of fabricating coatings with high mechanical and interfacial properties in a one-step process. The bilayer structure exhibited ~ 100% transmittance in the visible wavelength range and no sacrifice of the hard or adhesive properties of the single sub-layers.

Book Active Protective Coatings

Download or read book Active Protective Coatings written by Anthony E. Hughes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. It features many contributions written by experts from various industrial sectors which examine the needs of the sectors and the state of the art. The development of self-healing and protective coatings has been an expanding field in recent years and applies a lot of new knowledge gained from other fields as well as other areas of materials science to the development of coatings. It has borrowed from fields such as the food and pharmaceutical industries who have used, polymer techniques, sol-gel science and colloidosome technology for a range encapsulation techniques. It has also borrowed from fields like hydrogen storage such as from the development of hierarchical and other materials based on organic templating as “nanocontainers” for the delivery of inhibitors. In materials science, recent developments in high throughput and other characterisation techniques, such as those available from synchrotrons, are being increasing used for novel characterisation – one only needs to look at the application of these techniques in self healing polymers to gauge wealth of new information that has been gained from these techniques. This work is largely driven by the need to replace environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals that represent risk to humans such as chromate inhibitors which are still used in some applications.

Book Environmental Barrier Coatings

Download or read book Environmental Barrier Coatings written by Kang N. Lee and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global increase in air travel will require commercial vehicles to be more efficient than ever before. Advanced engine hot section materials are a key technology required to keep fuel consumption and emission to a minimum in next-generation gas turbines. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are the most promising material to revolutionize gas turbine hot section materials technology because of their excellent high‐temperature properties. Rapid surface recession due to volatilization by water vapor is the Achilles heel of CMCs. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) is an enabling technology for CMCs, since it protects CMCs from water vapor. The first CMC component entered into service in 2016 in a commercial engine, and more CMC components are scheduled to follow within the next few years. One of the most difficult challenges to CMC components is EBC durability, because failure of EBC leads to a rapid reduction in CMC component life. Key contributors to EBC failure include recession, oxidation, degradation by calcium‐aluminum‐magnesium silicates (CMAS) deposits, thermal and thermo‐mechanical strains, particle erosion, and foreign object damage (FOD). Novel EBC chemistries, creative EBC designs, and robust processes are required to meet EBC durability challenges. Engine-relevant testing, characterization, and lifing methods need to be developed to improve EBC reliability. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent advances in EBC technology to address these issues. In particular, topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: • Novel EBC chemistries and designs; • Processing including plasma spray, suspension plasma spray, solution precursor plasma spray, slurry process, PS-PVD, EB-PVD, and CVD; • Testing, characterization, and modeling; • Lifing.

Book Smart Coatings

Download or read book Smart Coatings written by Theodore Provder and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years coatings technologies have been influenced by the need to lower volatile organic contents (VOC) in order to comply with stricter environmental regulations as well as to reduce the use of costly petroleum based solvents. During this time the use of waterborne coatings in the architectural, industrial maintenance and original equipment manufacturing (OEM) sectors has continued to grow replacing solvent based coatings while meeting the ever decreasing VOC targets. In addition to waterborne coatings, other alternative technologies in the industrial and OEM sectors include powder coatings, uv-curable coatings and high solids coatings have had significant growth. Traditionally these coatings had the primary functions of protecting and decorating substrates. More recently, there has been growth in Research and Development and commercial product generation of coatings which have novel functions and sense and interact with their environment in addition to having the traditional protection and decoration functions. These coatings are often referred to as Smart Coatings. These types of coatings generally provide significant added value. Smart Coatings can be achieved in many ways such as by addition of additives and strategically designing polymer structures and coatings morphologies.
