Book Acoustics of Ducts and Mufflers

Download or read book Acoustics of Ducts and Mufflers written by M. L. Munjal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully updated second edition of the premier reference book on muffler and lined duct acoustical performance Engine exhaust noise pollutes the street environment and ventilation fan noise enters dwellings along with fresh air. People have become conscious of their working environment. Governments of most countries have responded to popular demand with mandatory restrictions on sound emitted by automotive engines, and a thorough knowledge of acoustics of ducts and mufflers is needed for the design of efficient muffler configurations. This fully updated Second Edition of Acoustics of Ducts and Mufflers deals with propagation, reflection and dissipation/absorption of sound along ducts/pipes/tubes, area discontinuities, perforated elements and absorptive linings that constitute the present-day mufflers and silencers designed to control noise of exhaust and intake systems of automotive engines, diesel-generator sets, compressors and HVAC systems. It includes equations, figures, tables, references, and solved examples and unsolved exercises with answers, so it can be used as a text book as well as a reference book. It also offers a complete presentation and analysis of the major topics in sound suppression and noise control for the analysis and design of acoustical mufflers, air conditioning and ventilation duct work. Both the fundamentals and the latest technology are discussed, with an emphasis on applications. Deals with reactive mufflers, dissipative silencers, the frequency-domain approach, and the time-domain approach. Fully updated second edition of the premier reference book on muffler and lined duct acoustical performance, in one complete volume Presents original new research on topics including baffle silencers and louvers, 3D analytical techniques, and flow-acoustic analysis of multiply-connected perforated-element mufflers Includes a general design procedure to help muffler designers in the automotive industry, exhaust noise being a major component of automobile and traffic noise pollution Written by an expert with four decades’ experience in teaching to graduate students, publishing extensively in reputed international journals, and consulting with industry for noise control as well as designing for quietness

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How creations welded from the scrapheap have become a folk art rage "Muffler men are the cigar-store Indians of the late 20th century, trade figures made to stand in front of shops to advertise what is sold inside. Both are considered forms of folk art, but the skinny metal figures with shimmering muffler heads and torsos and pipe-thin legs found outside auto repair shops are wittier, more imaginative and flamboyantly painted. . . ." -Rita Reif, The New York Times Art can appear in the most unexpected places. Muffler men, for example, have become one of the most striking and remarkable of recent folk art creations. From Walla Walla to Daytona quirky mannikins constructed from discarded automobile mufflers are popping up across America. Cobbled together as business signposts, these comical sculptures are sprouting outside automotive repair shops everywhere. Car debris harmonizes with human anatomy as rusty cast-offs assume a new identity as savvy objets d'art. Signage turns into art as mechanics fashion cowboys, dogs, robots, space aliens, and a host of other creatures from metal scraps of the profession and with the aid of their workaday tools and acetylene. If for only a passing moment, the muffler men enliven the roadside and help to break up the monotony of daily commutes. More than mere advertisements, they interact with their communities by greeting the passerby. The significance of muffler sculptures turns profound when they become local celebrities and are hailed as community landmarks. But what do they mean? For the creative mechanic who made them they are exclamatory signposts and store mascots. For the academic folklorists who analyze them they are symbolic icons with cultural meanings that proclaim individual identity and group membership. For the collectors who treasure them they are exemplars of "outsider art." For most nonspecialists who wave as they speed past they are funky delights. This colorful book documents the widespread appeal of muffler men as a form of occupational art that enriches the workplace, the local environment, and now the art gallery. Timothy Corrigan Correll is a folklorist whose research focuses on material behavior and folk belief. Patrick Arthur Polk serves as the museum scientist and archivist for the UCLA Folklore and Mythology Archives.

Book Acoustic Breakout Noise From Non Circular Muffler Shells

Download or read book Acoustic Breakout Noise From Non Circular Muffler Shells written by SH Gowtham Gudimella and published by CSMFL Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical treatment of sound transmission through the walls of non-circular muffler shell is done for plane mode transmission within the muffler shell. Non-circular muffler shells include distorted circular (due to the welding seam), elliptical (oval) and flat-oval shells. An analytical formulation has been developed in this thesis in order to predict the breakout noise with the acoustical and structural wave coupling phenomena. First, progressive wave model is chosen. Then, the Transverse Transmission Loss (TTL) is predicted at different frequencies of interest. This formulation is extended to the standing wave model by which results for anechoic, rigid end and open end boundary conditions are obtained. Transverse transmission loss (TTL) predicted, based on the analytical model, is compared and validated with computational results using a commercial 3-D numerical simulation (vibro-acoustic) software package like SYSNOISE. Same model is used for non-circular shell with flat-oval configuration. And also breakout noise obtained from different configurations like circular, elliptical, flat-oval, rectangular and square, all having the same equivalent radius, are compared. Finally, by incorporating effects of finite length of the muffler and end plates, analytical model has been developed for a circular shell. Parametric studies have been done wherever required to evolve the design guidelines which will be helpful for designers.
