Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert R. Pyle Our sense of place and community is made up of memories—personal memories of first-hand experience; oral memories that recount our ancestors’ experiences; and f- mal, codified civic memories set down in laws, ceremonies, and rituals. Together they are vital building blocks of citizenship. In a vivid and meaningful way this book p- serves memories relevant to understanding the roots of communities on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The surnames of many of Mount Desert’s earliest settlers are still found in today’s telephone directories. In these families many oral traditions are passed down from generation to generation, building outward from a historical core like the rings of a tree. “Dad used to farm this field,” Fred L. Savage’s great-nephew Don Phillips told me once, gesturing toward an alder growth. “His father grew vegetables for the hotel, and my great-grandfather grew grains. This road used to go right on up over the hill, and they used it to move the cemetery up there from where the hotel is now. ” Describing the field, Don ignores the alders and the towering evergreens beyond them, for in his mind’s eye he sees yellow, waving wheat and rye, bare ground, and a narrow cart track leading up the hill into the distance, on which his ancestors tra- ported the remains of their own forebears to a new resting place. Oral traditions, living memory, set the stage for him, and he accepts the reality of things he has never seen.

  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Mount Desert Island written by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annually, Mount Desert Island attracts over three million visitors to Acadia National Park, where lofty mountains, balsam-scented forests, and Maine's granite-lined coast enchant all. Almost bisecting the island is Somes Sound, a Norwegian-style fiord with three villages, Somesville, Southwest Harbor, and Northeast Harbor, nestled around its shores. In the 1850s, about two thousand residents made this pristine area their home, living off the sea and land with few visitors. By World War I, Mount Desert Island had become a destination for summer tourists. Mount Desert Island, with more than two hundred photographs selected from eleven collections, illustrates the transition of Somesville, Southwest Harbor, and Northeast Harbor as they evolved from isolated fishing and shipbuilding hamlets to meccas for Victorian summer visitors, a Who's Who of academia and theology. These images, some of them dating back to the Civil War era, bring to life the people, places, and events that form the history of these communities. From dignitary visits, such as that of the Archbishop of Canterbury, to carefree buckboard rides, Mount Desert Island demonstrates the broad range of rustic experiences and the complex lives of islanders as they forged their living in a changing economy. Both new and old visitors will recognize many of the images, though some will surprise all as they show places that no longer exist. Book Mount Desert on the Coast of Maine

Download or read book Mount Desert on the Coast of Maine written by Mrs. Clara Barnes Martin and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mount Desert, on the Coast of Maine: Infinite Riches in a Little Room The sketch of the topography and history of Mount Desert, which forms the principal part of this little book, includes nearly the whole of a monograph which was written in October, 1866, and first printed, privately, in the following May. The date is of some importance, as parts of it have been so often quoted that they may seem to belong elsewhere than in this their original setting. To it have now been added some notes upon the routes to Mount Desert and the excursions to be made there, in the hope that it may serve the double purpose of a Guide Book at the Island, and at home in wintry days a souvenir of pleasant summer-time.
