The mercenaries brought with them their low bodied hounds, which they bred with the local Irish terrier stock which eventually lead to the Glen of Imaal Terrier breed. Like many other terriers, the Glen of Imaal Terrier was originally used to hunt and kill vermin such as rats, mice, foxes, badges and otters. However the breed quickly started to be used as a general purpose farm dog due to its high levels of trainability and intelligence. In modern times the Glen of Imaal Terrier is mainly found as a household companion dog due to its affectionate and loving nature. The Glen of Imaal Terrier has a unique double coat that is wiry on the topside and much softer on the underside. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Glen of Imaal Terrier. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Glen of Imaal Terrier with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood.
