Book Music and Musicians at the Collegiate Church of St Omer

Download or read book Music and Musicians at the Collegiate Church of St Omer written by Andrew Kirkman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music played an exceptionally important role in the late Middle Ages - articulating people's social, psychological and eschatological needs. The process began with the training of choirboys whose skill was key to institutional identity. That skill was closely cultivated and directly sought by kings and emperors, who intervened directly in recruitment of choirboys and older singers in order to build and articulate their self-image and perceived status. Using the documentation of an exceptionally well preserved archive, this book focuses on music's functioning in an important church in late Medieval Northern France. It explores a period when musicians from this region set the agenda across Europe, developing what is still some of the most sophisticated music in the Western musical tradition. The book allows a close focus not on the great achievements of those who cultivated this music, but on the personal motivations that shaped their life and work.

Book Families Friends and Allies

Download or read book Families Friends and Allies written by Heather Tanner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-02-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a new model of political development for northern France through an analysis of the interrelationships between the counts of Boulogne and their neighbors in Flanders, Picardy, Normandy, and England. It also illuminates the little studied relations between less powerful counts and their neighboring territorial princes. Organized chronologically from the late ninth through mid-twelfth century, each chapter provides a political narrative and an analysis of the use of kinship and alliance (formal and informal) to govern and conduct politics. The final chapter examines the formation of reputation and identity of the comital family of Boulogne. The book is part of the larger debate on feudalism, the rise of government institutions, kinship and identity.

Book America s Girl

Download or read book America s Girl written by Tim Dahlberg and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Girl is an intimate look at the life and trials of Gertrude Ederle, who in 1926 not only became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, but broke the record set by men. The feat so thrilled America that it welcomed her home with a ticker tape parade that drew two million people. This fascinating portrait follows Ederle from her early days as a competitive swimmer through her gold medal triumph at the 1924 Olympics, to the first attempt the next year by Ederle to swim from France to England in frigid and turbulent waters, a feat that had been conquered by only five men up to that time. This is also a stirring look at the go-go era of the 1920s, when the country was about to recognize that women not only could vote, but compete on an international scale as athletes. At the height of Prohibition, Ederle's triumph over the formidable Channel was a triumph for women everywhere. America's Girl immerses readers in a pivotal era of American history and brings to life the spirit of that time.

Book The Great Swim

Download or read book The Great Swim written by Gavin Mortimer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic story of the four courageous female swimmers who captivated the world in the summer of 1926. Despite the tensions of a world still recovering from World War I, during the summer of 1926, the story that enthralled the public revolved around four young American swimmers-Gertrude Ederle, Mille Gade, Lillian Cannon, and Clarabelle Barrett-who battled the weather, each other, and considerable odds to become the first woman to conquer the brutal waters of the English Channel. The popular East Coast tabloids from New York to Boston engaged in rivalries nearly as competitive as the swimmers themselves; each backed a favorite and made certain their girl-in bathing attire-was plastered across their daily editions. Just as Seabiscuit, the little horse with the big heart, would bring the nation to a near standstill when he battled his rival War Admiral in 1938, this quartet of women held the attention of millions of people on both sides of the Atlantic for an entire summer. Gavin Mortimer uses primary sources, diaries, interviews with relatives, and contemporary reports to paint an unforgettable portrait of a competition that changed the way the world looked at women, both in sport and society. More than an underdog story, The Great Swim is a tale of perseverance, strength, and sheer force of will. A portrait of an era that is as evocative as Cinderella Man, this is a memorable story of America and Americans in the 1920s.

Book Pious Memories

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Brine
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2015-03-10
  • ISBN : 9004288341
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Pious Memories written by Douglas Brine and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall-mounted memorials (or ‘epitaphs’) enjoyed great popularity across the Burgundian Netherlands. Usually installed in churches above graves, they combine images with inscriptions and take the form of sculpted reliefs, brass plaques, or panel paintings. They preserved the memory of the dead and reminded the living to pray for their souls. On occasions, renowned artists like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden were closely involved in memorials’ creation. In Pious Memories Douglas Brine examines the wall-mounted memorial as a distinct category of funerary monument and shows it to be a significant, if overlooked, aspect of fifteenth-century Netherlandish art. The patronage, functions, and meanings of these objects are considered in the context of contemporary commemorative practices and the culture of memoria. Brine received the 2015 Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize, for an earlier version of Chapter 5 of Pious Memories, his article, “Jan van Eyck, Canon Joris van der Paele, and the Art of Commemoration,” published in the September 2014 issue of The Art Bulletin.
