Book excerpt: 'Antal Szerb is one of the great European writers' Ali Smith 'A novel to love as well as admire, always playful and ironical, full of brilliant descriptions, bon mots and absurd situations' Guardian A major modern classic: the turbulent story of a businessman torn between middle-class respectability and sensational bohemoia Mihály and Erzsi are on honeymoon in Italy. Mihály has recently joined the respectable family firm in Budapest, but as his gaze passes over the mysterious back-alleys of Venice, memories of his bohemian past reawaken his old desire to wander. When bride and groom become separated at a provincial train station, Mihály embarks on a chaotic and bizarre journey that leads him finally to Rome, where he must reckon with both his past and his future. In this intoxicating and satirical masterpiece, Szerb takes us deep into the conflicting desires of marriage and shows how adulthood can reverberate endlessly with the ache of youth. Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe Translated by Len Rix Antal Szerb was born in Budapest in 1901. Though of Jewish descent, he was baptised at an early age and remained a lifelong Catholic. He rapidly established himself as a formidable scholar, through studies of Ibsen and Blake and histories of English, Hungarian and world literature. He was a prolific essayist and reviewer, ranging across all the major European languages. Debarred by successive Jewish laws from working in a university, he was subjected to increasing persecution, and finally murdered in a forced labour camp in 1945. Pushkin Press publishes his novels The Pendragon Legend, Oliver VII and his masterpiece Journey by Moonlight, as well as the historical study The Queen's Necklace and Love in a Bottle and Other Stories.

Book Moonlight Travellers Collector s Edition

Download or read book Moonlight Travellers Collector s Edition written by Quentin Blake and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-format, signed Collector's Edition of this literary and artistic meditation on the theme of night travel from two of our greatest contemporary creative talents.'The moon drives everyone mad - you know that, well enough. But this is no lycanthropic or otherwise spooky metamorphosis: it's far stranger than that...' When Quentin Blake embarked on creating a set of new drawings on fantasies of travel, even he had not envisaged a series so sombre, so haunting, as Moonlight Travellers. These watercolour journeys through unknown landscapes capture, with unmatched skill, all the mystery and intrigue of the dead of night. A unique collaboration, this book brings Blake's macabre wit into dialogue with the imaginative insight of Will Self. With characteristic sharpness, Self mingles fiction, fact and flights of memory to transport the reader on a radical tour of Blake's mysterious lands. In Moonlight Travellers, two creative minds at the height of their powers connect word and image, darkness and light with our deepest sensibilities. In eight-wheeled contraptions and winged machines, they carry us on a trail of dreamlike journeys. After all, 'there's nothing more prosaic - at least, at this end of human history - than a car journey.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together two formidable talents for the first time, this literary and artistic collaboration on the theme of night travel features original artwork by Quentin Blake and text by Will Self. This breakthrough publication promises both to excite and haunt the reader’s imagination. Quentin Blake, the so-called Godfather of Illustration, combines his talents with novelist Will Self, “one of the most manically imaginative writers at work today” (Financial Times). The result is a book of irresistible appeal to literature and art lovers alike. Blake’s watercolors relate, with dark, fantastical humor, the experience of journeying across unknown landscapes in the dead of night. Accompanying this artistic narrative is an equally evocative text from the ever-brilliant mind of Will Self. With characteristic sharpness and wit, Self melds fact, fiction, and memory to transport the reader in the most radical way, departing on unexpected trajectories in response to Blake’s visual romp through time and space. Together, word and image connect with our deepest sensibilities in Moonlight Travellers as we journey through the landscapes and dreamscapes of night.

Book Traveler and the Moonlight

Book excerpt: Special 70th Anniversary American Edition A new translation by writer and poet Peter Hargitai Writer and poet Peter Hargitai, working on an English translation of Utas s holdvilg [Traveler and the Moonlight] in 1988, met with Szerbs widow, Klra, curious to know whether there had been real-life models for the novels charactersparticularly for Tams and va, who intrigued him above all the others. In answer, Klra Szerb pointed out a framed photograph on a bookshelf: a youngish man with a pale, aristocratic, melancholy face. This is Tams, Mrs. Szerb said. My husbands beloved schoolmate. And va? Who is va? I asked. She held up that very picture. This is also va. Tams and va are one and the same. Klra Szerb went on to insist that Hargitai keep the secret of Tams and vas single biographical precedent until after her death. And there we have a clue, not only to the mysterious androgyny of Tams and va, and to the sexually unconventional nature of Mihlys relationship with them, but also perhaps to an unresolved chapter from Szerbs past, one that held mysteries potent enough to give rise to a novel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging across literature, theater, history, and the visual arts, this collection of essays by leading scholars in the field explores the range of places where British Romantic-period sociability transpired. The book considers how sociability was shaped by place, by the rooms, buildings, landscapes and seascapes where people gathered to converse, to eat and drink, to work and to find entertainment. At the same time, it is clear that sociability shaped place, both in the deliberate construction and configuration of venues for people to gather, and in the way such gatherings transformed how place was experienced and understood. The essays highlight literary and aesthetic experience but also range through popular entertainment and ordinary forms of labor and leisure.

Book Great Travellers Volume 1

Download or read book Great Travellers Volume 1 written by Various and published by VM eBooks. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next to actual travel, the reading of first-class travel stories by men and women of genius is the finest aid to the broadening of views and enlargement of useful knowledge of men and the world’s ways. It is the highest form of intellectual recreation, with the advantage over fiction-reading of satisfying the wholesome desire for facts. With all our modern enthusiasm for long journeys and foreign travel, now so easy of accomplishment, we see but very little of the great world. The fact that ocean voyages are now called mere “trips” has not made us over-familiar with even our own kinsfolk in our new dependencies. Foreign peoples and lands are still strange to us. Tropic and Arctic lands are as far apart in condition as ever; Europe differs from Asia, America from Africa, as markedly as ever. Man still presents every grade of development, from the lowest savagery to the highest civilization, and our interest in the marvels of nature and art, the variety of plant and animal life, and the widely varied habits and conditions, modes of thought and action, of mankind, is in no danger of losing its zest. These considerations have guided us in our endeavor to tell the story of the world, alike of its familiar and unfamiliar localities, as displayed in the narratives of those who have seen its every part. Special interest attaches to the stories of those travellers who first gazed upon the wonders and observed the inhabitants of previously unknown lands, and whose descriptions are therefore those of discoverers. One indisputable advantage belongs to this work over the average record of travel: the reader is not tied down to the perusal of a one-man book. He has the privilege of calling at pleasure upon any one of these eminent travellers to recount his or her exploit, with the certainty of finding they are all in their happiest vein and tell their best stories.
