Book excerpt: Model tests of the navigation pass spillway proposed for the Montgomery Point Lock and Dam project were conducted with various anticipated pool and tailwater elevations and spillway gate positions to determine the hydraulic forces acting on the spillway gate, hydraulic characteristics of the spillway, stilling basin energy dissipation, and stability of riprap in the approach and exit channels from the spillway. The 1:15-scale section model simulated a 90-ft approach and exit channel width, spillway, three spillway gates, and stilling basin. Data were collected with a data acquisition system capable of collecting data for prescribed lengths of time and sampling at desired rates. Tests conducted to determine the vibration characteristics of the instrumented model spillway gate and bearings supporting the gate indicated that their natural frequencies were too high to influence the magnitude of the measured hydraulic dynamic forces. Test results are presented in pressure contour plots, time-history plots, tables, and graphs. The test results provided information for design guidance to ensure the integrity of the spillway, spillway gates, stilling basin, and riprap. (MM).

Book excerpt: Report 2 of the final report for model studies of the torque-tube gate system at Montgomery Point Lock and Dam deals with the structural aspects of the project. Analytical models for the theoretical prediction of the hydraulic forces on the gate are developed. The results of this formulations and multiple corresponding experiments on the physical model are synthesized into mathematical expressions for hydraulic pressure fields and support bearing reactions for design. Extreme-value analyses of the data in the controlling tests and additional experiments predict hydraulic pressures on the gate under unusual and improper operation conditions. The dynamic properties of the gate (natural frequencies of free vibration, modal shapes, and equivalent viscous damping ratios) are determined for evaluation of structural safety. Simplified engineering models to predict the gate's structural response from both deterministic and stochastic points of view are developed. The study concludes with a basic spectral analysis of the data collected to investigate the safety of the gate against fatigue in the long term. (MM).

Book excerpt: Model investigations of the spillway for Markland Dam were concerned initially with a design using a split-leaf vertical-lift gate, and finally with a design using five submergible and seven nonsubmergible tainter gates. Section models reproducing one gate bay and adjacent half gate bays at scales of 1:36 (vertical-lift gate) and 1:25 (tainter gates) were used for study of gate hoist loads and vibration tendencies due to hydraulic forces, and stilling basin performance. Also, a 1:4-scale model of a section of the face of the submergible tainter gate and the downstream face of the gate sill was used for detailed study of pressure conditions and observation of the behavior of an inflatable-type bottom seal for the gate. A satisfactory design for the more economical plan using tainter gates was developed. Loads on the submergible tainter gate due to hydraulic forces were not excessive, and with the top of the gate shaped so as to ensure positive pressures, oscillation of the gate is considered unlikely. Tests in the 1:4-scale model revealed that the gap between the face of the gate and the gate sill must not flare more than about 1 in. in order to maintain relatively stable pressures on the gate and sill. Tests of the bottom seal disclosed undesirable flutter when the seal was deflated and the gate submerged; this seal was abandoned for Markland Dam.
