Book excerpt: The MGSQ, published quarterly since the Winter of 1994, has approximately 60 pages in each issue, making records available to the public in many areas: indexes and abstracts of wills, marriages, church records, land records, family Bibles, locations of "lost" towns and crossroads, early migration routes into the state, military records (including Revolutionary soldiers who settled in Alabama), histories of pioneer families, computer genealogy, queries and much more. Various records from the ADAH are being abstracted and published in the MGSQ -- an invaluable source for researchers who are unable to visit in person. Each issue of the MGSQ has a full name index. Presently, member volunteers are conducting a county-wide cemetery survey with computer-indexing for greater accessibility. This survey is being printed in the MGSQ and will be published in book form at a later date.

Book excerpt: Why did the United States forsake its support for public works projects, public schools, public spaces, and high corporate taxes for the neoliberal project that uses the state to benefit businesses at the expense of citizens? The short answer to this question is race. This book argues that the white response to the black civil rights movement in the 1950s, '60s, and early '70s inadvertently created the conditions for emergence of American neoliberalism. Neoliberalism is the result of an unlikely alliance of an elite liberal business class and local segregationists that sought to preserve white privilege in the civil rights era. The white response drew from a language of neoliberalism, as they turned inward to redefine what it meant to be a good white citizen. The language of neoliberalism depoliticized class tensions by getting whites to identify as white first, and as part of a social class second. This book explores the four pillars of neoliberal policy, austerity, privatization, deregulation, and tax cuts, and explains how race created the pretext for the activation of neoliberal policy. Neoliberalism is not about free markets. It is about controlling the state to protect elite white economic privileges.

Paine assumed command of the U.S. Army's District of Western Kentucky at Paducah in the summer of 1864, he faced a defiant populace, a thriving black market and undisciplined troops plagued by low morale. Guerrillas pillaged towns and murdered the vocal few that supported the Union. Paine's task was to enforce discipline and mollify the secessionist majority in a 2,300-square-mile district. In less than two months, he succeeded where others had failed. For secessionists, his tenure was a "reign of terror"--for the Unionist minority, a "happy and jubilant" time. An abolitionist, Paine encouraged the enlistment of black troops and fair wages for former slaves. Yet his principled views led to his downfall. Critics and enemies falsified reports, leading to his removal from command and a court-martial. He was exonerated on all but one minor charge yet historians have perpetuated the Paine-the-monster myth. This book tells the complete story.
